Welcome to the 2024 UAA Collegiate Aviation Education Conference and Expo in Memphis, Tennesee, the home of the University Aviation Association.
As I complete my second year as President of UAA’s Board of Trustees, I am proud to say that the organization has continued to grow in directions we could not have imagined ten years ago. Nevertheless, we have accomplished a lot because of the vision and hard work of your board of trustees, staff, and volunteers. I am humbled and greatly appreciate the support from our collegiate members, industry partners, students, and volunteers who helped make this organization successful. Because of the dedication and hard work of everyone involved, we have a phenomenal conference planned for you this year.
I am grateful to all of you for the proposals you submitted. We continue to receive many excellent presentations and have had to expand our presentation slots to accommodate as many members as possible. The conference includes many opportunities to collaborate, network, meet new people, and reconnect with friends. Additionally, the feedback from last year showed that having the awards banquet on Thursday evening was a good move. Therefore, we will continue with that tradition again this year. Please join me on Thursday evening to celebrate our members’ accomplishments. With your help and engagement, we are looking at another year of record-setting activities.
A special thank you to our new and returning UAA staff, the Program Planning Committee and our many volunteers for all their work in putting together this conference. Their tireless efforts and sleepless nights have resulted in a phenomenal program this year. I also want to thank our sponsors, those who contributed to our scholarships, our fabulous exhibitors, and those who contributed to the silent auction. Your support makes it possible for us to put together this conference and support the work of the faculty and students.
I will also reiterate my call from last year and ask for your continued support and engagement with UAA. I believe we can push the boundaries together and ensure a sustainable future for our industry. If there is a way the Board of Trustees can support these endeavors, please let us know.
I look forward to meeting and working with all of you this week as we continue this journey to support the industry and the next generation of professionals.
Chaminda Prelis, Ph.D. President, University Aviation Association

An Examination of the Effect of Aerospace Living Learning Communities on Student Efficacy
Professor Waters and I will present the results of a research project that examined the overall impacts residency in an Aerospace Living Learning Community (ALLC) have on student performance and engagement. We surveyed all available students in a freshman level course that Prof. Waters taught. Both residents and non-residents of the ALLC were enrolled in the course. The survey asked questions about the student's residency status in the ALLC, involvement in study groups, extracurricular activities and demographic information, and they were asked to rate their sense of community within the ALLC, the department and the university. The responses to the survey were linked to the students' grades in the course as well as their GPA. We will present the findings of this study and the implications for other universities that either have or are considering starting an ALLC.

This session discusses new avenues for re-thinking the foundational educational principles needed for teaching in the aviation industry across all fields. The session leaders will describe the need to integrate more opportunities for educational-focused coursework into the undergraduate curriculum in collegiate aviation programs, potentially leading to the creation of a novel standalone degree: a B.S. in Aviation Education. Such a degree is in line with undergraduate opportunities in many other technical and performance-based degree fields. Moreover, a degree in aviation education might lead to improving student interest in pursuing advanced studies in aviation, choosing a career in the industry, and increasing the diversity of a changing industry. Such an opportunity could also lead to increased efficiencies in the classrooms from high schools and flight schools to collegiate aviation programs and airlines, achieving another avenue to target industry shortages.

The Advanced Qualification Program (AQP) has emerged as a transformative approach in aviation education, driven by the fundamental principle of aligning training and evaluation. Aiming to identify essential skills, knowledge, and abilities (SKA) in a diverse range of aviation scenarios, AQP prioritizes proficiency and flight safety. While many airlines have embraced AQP for pilot training, its integration into higher education courses is a rarity. In higher education, the flexibility of academic freedom allows instructors to tailor teaching materials to meet students' specific needs, resulting in a more engaging and effective learning experience. Our research compares the efficacy of AQP in aviation higher education with traditional lecture-based instruction to investigate the efficacy of AQP in aviation higher education. Furthermore, our research tracks students who have entered the industry and completed their Part 121 Air Carrier training under AQP.

Not So Boring: The Importance of Teaching FAA Rulemaking Procedures in Aviation Education
Much attention-both in academic literature and popular publications-is given to the substance of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, including how to learn, interpret, and comply with them. While this is undoubtedly invaluable work, far less attention is paid to how these regulations are made in the first place. This education session aims to begin to change that by giving FAA rulemaking a place in the spotlight. The session engagingly explains the FAA's rulemaking process, describes why it matters in the context of aviation education, details the importance of the public, and presents the results of a study examining who participates in the agency's rulemaking process.

The importance of safety in aviation is underscored by the loss of all 346 passengers and crew onboard Lion Air Flight 610 on 29th October 2018, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on 10th March 2019, which resulted in the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX airplane between March 2019 and December 2020. More recently, on 5th January 2024, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, a B-737 MAX 9, suffered the blowout of a cabin panel after take-off from Portland International Airport The loss of the two B-737 MAX 8 aircraft, 'have cost Boeing more than $20 billion in compensation, production costs, and fines, led to a 20 month grounding for the best-selling plane' (Shepardson, 2023). The cost of the blowout of the door plug is still mounting. This presentation examines the importance of safety through the lens of the design and deployment of the B-737 MAX in commercial airline service.

Reclaiming the Sky for UAA Aviation Programs
Last year, ACI-NA partnered with our Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham to give 'Young Professionals' - young managers under 40 working at ACI-NA airports - an opportunity to learn resiliency lessons from the example of 9/11's aviation heroes. We showcased this at UAA's conference last year and the student group at U of Memphis asked if they could lead to expand the program to aviation students at UAA schools in 2024. We have been working with the student club at U of M and their professor to integrate the book about the 9/11 heroes into the professor's aviation management course this spring. We recruited MEM, an ACI-NA airport, to host a workshop in April to give the students a chance to gain feedback from airport managers as the students discuss lessons they learned and can apply to their lives. Goal is to expand this to all UAA students. Thomas Murphy - Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University

DUI/DWI Investigations Program
Keeping our airways safe for the flying public is of utmost importance to our agency. Stressful situations can lead to increased alcohol consumption, which potentially leads to unsafe vehicle operation, DUIs or DWIs. The FAA recognizes that pilots who take unsafe risks involving alcohol or drugs while driving a motor vehicle may also do so while flying an airplane. Our program was created in 1990 to address this problem and utilizes Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.) Part 61 to specify and codify regulations pertaining to reporting alcohol and/or drug-related motor vehicle actions (MVAs). We are reaching out to aviators to help prevent pilots from violating the FAA reporting requirements on their airman medical applications and separately, as needed, to AXE-710.

Determining the best way to integrate new flight students who already possess a Private Pilot certificate
There are a number of ways collegiate aviation programs handle the unique needs of students who have already completed flight training outside of their university. There are many challenges in working with these students who may have learned some foundational skills that are contrary to the ways your program teaches. These students also need to become familiar with your program's particular ways of operating. How are other programs addressing these challenges? What is the best way to help these students succeed in your program?

A Conceptual Framework to Measure Sustainability Perceptions and Value Among Aviation
Recent sustainability initiatives include reduced noise pollution, optimal energy consumption, reduced gaseous and particulate matter emissions, and community engagement. One of the challenges for these aviation businesses is achieving the necessary organization culture transformation that would be needed to implement such initiatives. Students are potential agents of change that would facilitate transformation of organization cultures of their prospective companies toward implementing sustainability practices. Knowing how to best prepare the students would also help the aviation institutions know how to best tailor their curriculums to prepare these future aviation professionals.

Assessing Competitive Growth in Flag Carrier Options for US-Oriented International Travel
Traditionally, international travel options between two countries were limited to choosing the flag carrier(s) of either the departing country or the arriving country. However, in the interest of competition to increase global connectivity and reduce the price of air travel, countries have adopted a more flexible approach to allow carriers more choice where they fly, thereby offering passengers more choice in how they arrive at their destinations. This is the essence of liberalization in aviation, a movement toward market-based competition in international travel.

Exploring Mental Health Disorders Among Air Traffic
Air traffic control facilities nationwide are at approximately 81% staffing (Duncan, 2023). Further, the number of fully certified air traffic controllers has decreased by 1,200 over the past ten years, and 6% of current controllers are eligible for retirement (FAA Reauthorization, 2023). Despite staffing shortages, air traffic control remains a safety-critical environment where controllers must continue to perform while shouldering intensive cognitive demands and high levels of responsibility.

Exploring the Fatigue Levels, Subjective Sleepiness, Sleep Hygiene, and Health Promoting Lifestyle of
Unlike military and commercial aviation, there has been limited research conducted on fatigue in flight training. Previous studies have suggested that fatigue significantly impacts the quality and safety of flight training within collegiate aviation settings. Factors such as heavy academic workloads, early and late flights, and insufficient sleep contribute to fatigue in Part 141 collegiate aviation programs. It is reasonable to assume that collegiate aviation pilots sacrifice a healthy lifestyle due to the demanding nature of flight and academic training.

Phenomenological Inquiry on Breastfeeding Mothers in Part 121 Commercial Aviation
The researcher will share the preliminary findings of her dissertation research: a phenomenological study exploring the lived experiences of breastfeeding mothers who return to piloting from maternity leave. The study seeks to provide insights into challenges for this population of individuals navigating the demands of the airline career with the physiological demands of lactation. The focus is to explore how new mothers pump, store, and transport breastmilk during time away from base. Currently, the population of new mothers in the industry is understudied.

Pilots' Likelihood to Report Sleep Disorder(s) in Part 121 Commercial Aviation
Airline pilots are among the millions of Americans suffering from sleep disorders, but many pilots are afraid of being grounded and do not disclose their conditions or seek treatment. This study aims to develop a statistical model representing predictors of pilots' likelihood to report sleep disorders in Part 121 commercial aviation. Using a simultaneous regression strategy, the study explores the relationships between pilots' likelihood of reporting sleep disorders and 27 predictors (demographics, career factors, personality type, familial factors, sleep data, wakefulness, medical history, fatigue management tools, self-rated health, and work environment).

The applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) have significantly empowered the safety and operational efficiency within the aviation sector for safer and more efficient operations. Airlines derive informed decisions to enhance operational efficiency and strategic planning through extensive contextual analysis of customer reviews and feedback from social media, such as Twitter and Facebook. However, this form of analytical endeavor is laborintensive and time-consuming. In this study, we conducted an exploration of the large language model BERT and three of its derivatives using an airline sentiment tweet dataset for downstream tasks. Our study serves as a pivotal benchmark for future exploration in customer sentiment analysis, with implications that extend from the airline industry to broader transportation sectors, where customer feedback plays a crucial role.

Enhancing Aviation Safety and Workforce Sustainability: Reassessing Visual Medical Standards for Pilots
The global aviation industry is grappling with a shortage of flight personnel, prompting a reevaluation of aviation medical standards to attract and retain crew. Current standards may be overly stringent, limiting qualified candidates and affecting pilot retention. Research aims to understand visual requirements for safe flight, investigating how degraded visual factors impact performance. A study involving 38 pilots in a flight simulator assessed performance under various visual conditions and emergency scenarios. Results suggest current standards may be unnecessarily strict, as pilots could safely land the aircraft even in major emergencies until vision degradation reached 20/100. Heart rate measures also showed significant changes during major emergencies beginning when vision degraded to 20/400. Future studies aim to explore more challenging scenarios, such as night landings. These findings underscore the potential for revising visual standards to broaden the recruitment pool while maintaining safety.

NASA astronaut and Southwest Airlines Captain Robert 'Hoot' Gibson said 'If I have done well as an aviator, it is because my dad… didn't just teach me how to fly, he taught me the 'why' of it … the aerodynamics behind it; the reasons that you're doing things, not just how to do it.' It is important for all pilots to be taught not only how to fly but also the 'why' and the 'how' of flight. Pilots in collegiate aviation programs are educated in aerodynamics and aircraft performance for just these reasons. Utilizing flight test in undergraduate aerodynamics and/or aircraft performance classes can support this education by revealing how an airplane's aerodynamic characteristics can be determined in flight, how they relate to the airplane's performance, and how an airplane's performance is actually determined, much of which is finally published in the Pilots Operating Handbook or Airplane Flight Manual.

Prior research suggests that flight training providers experience delays scheduling check rides when using Designated Pilot Examiners (DPE). One potential solution to alleviate these delays is for Part 141 pilot schools to obtain examining authority. According to Rosser and Mosey (n.d.) many Part 141 flight schools experience challenges in attaining examining authority. This project specifically addresses recent changes to Document 8900.1 which is guidance used by FSDOs in the examining authority application process. Part 141 Chief Flight Instructors were surveyed to provide their perceptions of the new guidance and any effect the guidance has on their intent to pursue examining authority for their pilot school. If a pilot school had already applied for examining authority, they were asked to share their experiences during the application process.
