Cochlear Implant Program at UHS Cochlear implantation is a recognized and accepted medical procedure for the treatment of severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in both children and adults. To cater the need for addressing the growing number of hearing loss (congenial or acquired) in children and adults in the region, UHS is proudly announcing its capacity to provide cochlear implant program for all the residents of Sharjah and other emirates in UAE. In line with the vision of H.H Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah and the supreme council member, to provide world-class treatment facility in the Sharjah emirate, UHS is equipped with the state of the art ENT and Audiology clinic to foster the need for the hearing loss population with highly skilled surgeons and Audiologists.

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic hearing device that provides individuals with the sensation of hearing by bypassing the damaged part of the ear and stimulating the hearing nerve directly. A cochlear implant is an option when the child or adult has very little remaining hearing, for example in severe or profound hearing impairment. A cochlear implant may be of more help than hearing aids in some cases, especially when the hearing impairment is so severe that even the most powerful hearing aid cannot make the sounds loud enough for the child to hear.

Cochlear implant surgery involves placing tiny electrodes into the cochlea in the inner ear.

These electrodes convert sound into electrical signals that go to the hearing (auditory) nerve.

The cochlear implant surgery causes a permanent change to the cochlea, and any hearing that the child had before the implant surgery may no longer be present. Once the decision is made to go ahead with a cochlear implant and the surgery is completed, the procedure cannot be reversed. Post Cochlear implant surgery, the audiologists would help the child or adults to hear through the Cochlear implant better.

Hearing Aids vs. Cochlear Implants Hearing aids amplify sound and rely on the integrity of the hair cells of the inner ear. Therefore, patients with a severe to profound hearing loss may obtain limited or no benefit from hearing aids for speech perception. A cochlear implant on the other hand bypasses/replaces damaged hair cells and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. The electrodes in the internal component of the implant provide the "electrical spark" that is picked up by the nerve and taken to the brain for interpretation. Since these electrodes lie along the length of the cochlea, it is possible to have access to the full range of sounds even where there are no hair cells present.

How a Cochlear Implant Works Once the CI surgery is done, your audiologist would take over your hearing care through the cochlear implants.

Sound waves enter the system through the microphone (located in the processor).

The sound processor converts the sound into a distinctive digital code that has been programmed or "mapped" by the audiologist to maximize cochlear implant sound and speech understanding.

Once processed, the electrically coded signal is sent to the headpiece and transmitted through the skin via radio frequency (RF) waves to the implant.

The implant receives the signal and delivers it to the array of electrodes positioned within the cochlea.

The electrodes stimulate the hearing nerve fibres within the cochlea.

The nerve sends the signal to the brain for interpretation.

Early Intervention

The ability to detect sound is critical to a child's ability to learn speech and language. The absence of such sound can have profound effects on speech and language development as well as the educational achievements of children. Given the potential impact on a child's life, it is critical that hearing impairment in children is detected early. Similarly, early referrals to the Cochlear Implant Team are crucial to ensure that maximum benefit is obtained from the cochlear implant.

Having the cochlear implant surgery is just the first step. After surgery, the child will hear many different sounds, but must learn what the sounds mean. Children with cochlear implants will require much training and language experience before learning to perceive and to produce meaningful speech sounds. Children with cochlear implants usually work together with speech-pathologists or auditory verbal therapists to help them learn to understand language and to talk.

Cochlear Implant Team at UHS QUALIFICATIONS Dr. Alwaa acquired his master’s degree in medicine from Damascus School of Medicine, Syria and achieved specialized ENT certification and Post Graduate studies in Otorhinolaryngology from Ministry of Health and Ministry of Higher Education, Damascus, Syria respectively.

He also completed his fellowship in ENT from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

EXPERIENCE Dr. Alwaa is an ENT consultant with 24 years of experience. He acquired his advanced surgical training in ENT Head & Neck Surgery. He has experience in dealing with routine and complicated surgical cases, as well as paediatric otolaryngology.

Dr. Ahmad Munzer Al-Waa MD, MSC Specialization Certificate E.N.T., FRCS (Edn), FRCS ORL-HNS (UK) Head of ENT Department, Consultant ENT, Head & Neck Surgeon

He regularly performs routine ENT operative procedures such as tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, septal surgery, aero-digestive tract endoscopies, microlaryngoscopy, microsurgery of the ear and larynx, endoscopic sinus surgery as well as cancer surgery of the head and neck.

Dr. Ziad Kurdali graduated Doctor of Medicine with honorable average from University of Damascus, Syria in year 1982. He then further pursued his study to Masters Degree in ENT from the admired University of Berlin (Virchow Krankenhaus) in Germany year 1995.

Dr. Ziad Kurdali

He published many times in numerous medical journals and has attended many international conferences, meetings and workshop.

Dr. Ziad Kurdali has an excellent clinical experience in ENT for more than 30 years handling simple to complicated cases. He is also an ENT Doctor Certified from Berlin, Germany since 1995 up to the present. Aside from his admirable clinical background, Dr. Ziad is also an active member and head manager to different organizations. Among the few are the following: Head Manager (ENT division) Red Crescent Society since 2007 to present, Head Manager of ENT Division in the General Hospital in Damascus since 1995 to date, Head Manager of the Scientific Council for Medical Specialties in Syria, Chaired of the Division ENT in Hasaka Syria for 7 years and Member of the Examination Committee to examine the jurisdiction of the colloquium ENT. Furthermore, he participated in local, regional and international lectures and conferences. He is also a speaker, lecturer and at the same time examiner in the Middlesex University (UK), University of Sharjah (UAE) and Post Graduate Diploma ENT, Rila Institute of Health Science (Sharjah Chapter).

Cochlear Implant Team at UHS QUALIFICATIONS Dr. Ayas obtained his Ph.D in Audiology from Manipal University, after completing his Master’s degree in Audiology & SLP from the same university. He also earned his Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from University of Florida.

EXPERIENCE Certified Senior Audiologist with extensive experience in various multispecialty hospitals. Ayas believes in combining latest technology with patient centered approach to provide quality care to all his patients. Ayas has vast experience in pediatric hearing evaluation and hearing aid fitting and commendable experience in cochlear implants technology. He has been trained in cochlear implants at Austria, India, and Switzerland. He is also well versed in hearing aid fitting for geriatric population with all the hearing aid brands.

Dr. Muhammed Ayas MASLP, AuD, PhD. Senior Audiologist

Ayas is involved in teaching and training the medical students about the basics of audiology and auditory physiology. He was a Senior Audiologist at Manipal hospital and a faculty member – Assistant professor training students in Audiology at Manipal University India for 4 years.

Ayas has published his work in international journals and presented his experience in several local and international Audiology conferences at London, Austria, and New Zealand etc.

‫ﯾﻣﺗﻠــك اﻟدﻛﺗــور زﯾــﺎد ﻛردﻋﻠــﻲ ﺧﺑــرة طﺑﯾــﺔ ﺳــرﯾرﯾﺔ‬ ‫ﻣﺗﻣﯾــزة ﺗزﯾــد ﻋن ‪ 30‬ﻋﺎﻣﺎ ً ﻓﻲ اﺧﺗﺻــﺎص اﻷﻧف واﻷذن‬ ‫واﻟﺣﻧﺟــرة وﺟراﺣﺗﮭــﺎ وﺟراﺣــﺔ اﻟــرأس واﻟﻌﻧــق‪ ،‬ﻋﺎﻟــﺞ‬ ‫ﺧﻼﻟﮭــﺎ ﺣــﺎﻻت ﺗراوﺣــت ﺑﯾــن اﻟﺑﺳــﯾطﺔ إﻟــﻰ اﻟﻣﻌﻘــدة‪،‬‬ ‫وھــو طﺑﯾــب أﻧــف وأذن وﺣﻧﺟــرة ﻣﻌﺗﻣــد ﻣــن ﺑرﻟﯾــن‪،‬‬ ‫أﻟﻣﺎﻧﯾــﺎ ﻣﻧــذ اﻟﻌــﺎم ‪ 1995‬ﺣﺗــﻰ اﻵن‪ .‬وإﻟــﻰ ﺟﺎﻧــب‬ ‫ﺧﻠﻔﯾﺗــﮫ اﻟطﺑﯾــﺔ اﻟﺳــرﯾرﯾﺔ اﻟﺟدﯾــرة ﺑﺎﻹﻋﺟــﺎب‪ ،‬ﯾُﻌﺗﺑــر‬ ‫اﻟدﻛﺗــور زﯾــﺎد أﯾﺿ ـﺎ ً ﻋﺿــواً ﻓﺎﻋ ـﻼً ﺗوﻟــﻰ إدارة أﻗﺳــﺎم‬ ‫ووﻣﺟﺎﻟــس ﻋﻠﻣﯾــﺔ ﻣﺧﺗﻠﻔــﺔ‪ ،‬ﻣﻧﮭــﺎ ﺗرأﺳــﮫ ﻟﻘﺳــم اﻷﻧــف‬ ‫واﻷذن واﻟﺣﻧﺟــرة ﻓــﻲ ﺟﻣﻌﯾــﺔ اﻟﮭــﻼل اﻷﺣﻣــر اﻟﺳــوري‬ ‫ﻣﻧــذ اﻟﻌــﺎم ‪ 2007‬وﺣﺗــﻰ اﻵن‪ ،‬وﻋﻣﻠــﮫ ﻟﻘﺳــم‬ ‫اﻷﻧــف واﻷذن واﻟﺣﻧﺟــرة ﻓــﻲ اﻟﻣﺳﺗﺷــﻔﻰ اﻟﻌــﺎم ﻓــﻲ‬ ‫دﻣﺷــق ﻣﻧــذ اﻟﻌــﺎم ‪ ، 1982‬وﺗرأﺳــﮫ اﻟﻣﺟﻠــس اﻟﻌﻠﻣــﻲ‬ ‫ﻟﻠﺗﺧﺻﺻــﺎت اﻟطﺑﯾــﺔ ﻓــﻲ ﺳــورﯾﺎ‪ ،‬وﺗرأﺳــﮫ ﻟﻘﺳــم اﻷﻧــف‬ ‫واﻷذن واﻟﺣﻧﺟــرة ﻓــﻲ ﻣﺣﺎﻓظــﺔ اﻟﺣﺳــﻛﺔ‪ ،‬ﺑﺎﻹﺿﺎﻓــﺔ إﻟــﻰ‬ ‫ﻋﺿوﯾﺗــﮫ ﻓــﻲ ﻟﺟﻧــﺔ اﻻﻣﺗﺣﺎﻧــﺎت ﻟﻼﺧﺗﺑــﺎرات اﻷﻛﺎدﯾﻣﯾــﺔ‬ ‫ﻓــﻲ ﺗﺧﺻــص اﻷﻧــف واﻷذن واﻟﺣﻧﺟــرة وﻛﻠﯾــﺔ اﻟطــب‬ ‫اﻟﺑﺷــري ﺑﺟﺎﻣﻌــﺔ اﻟﺷــﺎرﻗﺔ ﻓــﻲ اﻹﻣــﺎرات اﻟﻌرﺑﯾــﺔ‬ ‫اﻟﻣﺗﺣــدة وﻣﺣﺎﺿــرا ﻣﻧــذ ﻋــﺎم ‪،2013‬‬ ‫وﻣﺣﺎﺿــر وﻣﺗﺣــن ﻟطﻠﺑــﺔ اﻟدﺑﻠــوم ﻓــﻲ ﻣﻌﮭــد رﯾــﻼ ﻟﻠﻌﻠــوم‬ ‫اﻟﺻﺣﯾــﺔ )ﻓــرع اﻟﺷــﺎرﻗﺔ(‪ .‬ﺷــﺎرك ﻓــﻲ ﻣﺣﺎﺿــرات‬ ‫وﻣؤﺗﻣــرات ﻣﺣﻠﯾــﺔ‪ ،‬وإﻗﻠﯾﻣﯾــﺔ‪ ،‬ودوﻟﯾﺔ‪،‬وﯾﻌﻣــل اﻟدﻛﺗــور‬ ‫زﯾــﺎد ﻛﺎﺧﺗﺻﺎﺋــﻲ أول اﻷﻧــف واﻹذن واﻟﺣﻧﺟــرة‬ ‫وﺟراﺣــﺔ اﻟــراس واﻟﻌﻧــق ﻓــﻲ ﻣﺳﺗﺷــﻔﻰ اﻟﺟﺎﻣﻌــﺔ‬ ‫ﺑﺎﻟﺷﺎرﻗﺔ ﻣﻧذ ﻋﺎم ‪ 2013‬وﺣﺗﻰ اﻵن‪.‬‬

‫ﻣﺎ ھﻲ ﻓﺎﺋدة زرع اﻟﻘوﻗﻌﺔ اﻟﺑﺎﻛر ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺳﻣﻊ‬ ‫إن إدراك اﻟطﻔل ﻟﻠﺻوت ﺑﺷﻛل ﺑﺎﻛر ھﺎم وﺿروري ﻟﺗﻌﻠم اﻟﻠﻐﺔ واﻟﻛﻼم ‪ ,‬ﻣﻣﺎ ﯾﻧﻌﻛس ذﻟك ﺳﻠﺑﺎ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺗﻌﻠم‬ ‫اﻟطﻔل ﻟﻠﻛﻼم وﺗطور اﻟﻠﻐﺔ ﻟدﯾﮫ ﻓﯾﺳﺑب ﺗﺄﺧر ﺗرﺑوي ﻟدﯾﮫ‪.‬‬ ‫اﻟﻛﺷف اﻟﺑﺎﻛر ﻟﻧﻘص اﻟﺳﻣﻊ ﻋﻧد اﻷطﻔﺎل ھﺎم ﺟدا وﻓور اﻛﺗﺷﺎف ذﻟك ﯾﺟب ﺗﺣوﯾﻠﮫ ﻟﻔرﯾق زراﻋﺔ اﻟﻘوﻗﻌﺔ ﺣﺗﻰ‬ ‫ﺗﺗﺣﻘق اﻟﻔﺎﺋدة اﻟﺗﺎﻣﺔ ﻣن زراﻋﺔ اﻟﻘوﻗﻌﺔ وذﻟك ﻟﺗﺣﺳﯾن ﻗدرة اﻟطﻔل ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺳﻣﻊ وﺑﺷﻛل ﺑﺎﻛر‪.‬‬ ‫إن ﺟراﺣﺔ زرع ﻗوﻗﻌﺔ ﻟﯾﺳت ﺳوى اﻟﺧطوة اﻷوﻟﻰ ‪ .‬ﺑﻌد اﻟﺟراﺣﺔ‪ ،‬ﻓﺈن اﻟطﻔل ﺳوف ﯾﺳﻣﻊ اﻟﻌدﯾد ﻣن‬ ‫اﻷﺻوات اﻟﻣﺧﺗﻠﻔﺔ ‪ ،‬وﻟﻛن ﯾﺟب ﺗﻌﻠم ﻣﺎ ﺗﻌﻧﯾﮫ ھذه اﻷﺻوات‪ .‬وأطﻔﺎل زراﻋﺔ ﻗوﻗﻌﺔ ﯾﺗطﻠﺑوا اﻟﻛﺛﯾر ﻣن‬ ‫اﻟﺗدرﯾب واﻟﺧﺑرة ﻟﻠﺗﻌﻠم ﻋﻠﻰ إدراك اﻷﺻوات ﺑﺎﻟﺗﺎﻟﻲ ﺗﺗطور ﻗدرﺗﮭم ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻛﻼم ‪ ,‬وھذا ﯾﺗطﻠب ﺗﻌﺎون وﺛﯾق‬ ‫اﺧﺗﺻﺎﺻﯾﻲ اﻟﻛﻼم واﻟﻧطق ﻟﺗﻣﻛﯾن اﻟطﻔل ﻣن اﻟﺳﻣﺎع ﺑﺷﻛل ﺟﯾد وﺗﻌﻠم اﻟﻠﻐﺔ واﻟﻧطق ﺑﺷﻛل ﺻﺣﯾﺢ‪.‬‬

‫ﻛﯾف ﯾﺗم ﻋﻣل ﺟﮭﺎز اﻟﻘوﻗﻌﺔ اﻟﻛﮭرﺑﺎﺋﻲ‬ ‫ﺣﺎﻟﻣﺎ ﺗﺗم ﻋﻣﻠﯾﺔ زراﻋﺔ اﻟﻘوﻗﻌﺔ ﻓﺈن اﺧﺗﺻﺎﺻﻲ‬ ‫اﻟﺳﻣﻌﯾﺎت ﺳﯾﻘوم ﺑﺗوﻟﻲ ﻣوﺿوع ﻋﻣل ھذا اﻟﺟﮭﺎز‬ ‫واﻟﺑدء ﺑﺗدرﯾب اﻟﻣرﯾض‬ ‫ﯾﺗﻠﻘﻰ ﻻﻗط اﻟﺻوت اﻟﻣﻛﺑراﻟﻣزروع واﻟﻣﺗﺻل ﺑﺎﻟﻣﻌﺎﻟﺞ‪.‬‬ ‫ﯾﻘوم اﻟﻣﻌﺎﻟﺞ ﺑﺗﺣوﯾل اﻟﻣوﺟﺎت اﻟﺻوﺗﯾﺔ ﻟﻧﺑﺿﺎت ﻛﮭرﺑﺎﺋﯾﺔ‬ ‫ﻣﺑرﻣﺟﺔ ﺑﺷﻛل رﻣوز رﻗﻣﯾﺔ ﻣﮭﯾﺋﺔ ﻟﺗﻠﻘﻲ اﻷﺻوات‪.‬‬ ‫ﯾﻘوم اﻟﻣﻌﺎﻟﺞ ﺑﺈرﺳﺎﻟﮭﺎ ﺑدوره ﺑﺷﻛل إﺷﺎرات رادﯾوﯾﺔ‬ ‫ﻣﺷﻔرة ﻛﮭرﺑﺎﺋﯾﺎ ﻟﺗﻧﺗﻘل ﻋﺑر اﻟﻣﺟس أو اﻷﻗطﺎب‬ ‫اﻟﻣزروﻋﺔ ﺑﺎﻷذن اﻟداﺧﻠﯾﺔ‪.‬‬ ‫اﻟﻌﺻب اﻟﺳﻣﻌﻲ ﻟﺗﻘوم ﺑﺗﻧﺑﯾﮫ ھذا اﻟﻌﺻب ﺑﻣواﺿﻊ ﻋدﯾدة‪.‬‬ ‫ﯾﻘوم اﻟﻣﺳرى اﻟﻛﮭرﺑﺎﺋﻲ )اﻹﻟﻛﺗرود( ﺑﺗﺣﻔﯾز أﻟﯾﺎف‬ ‫اﻟﻌﺻب اﻟﺳﻣﻌﻲ ﻓﻲ ﻗوﻗﻌﺔ اﻷذن‪.‬‬ ‫ﯾﻘوم اﻟﻌﺻب ﺑﻧﻘل وإرﺳﺎل ھذه اﻹﺷﺎرات إﻟﻰ ﻣرﻛز‬ ‫اﻟﺳﻣﻊ ﺑﺎﻟدﻣﺎغ ﺣﯾث ﺗﺗم ﻓﯾﮫ اﻟﺗرﺟﻣﺔ اﻟﻔورﯾﺔ ﻟﻠﺻوت‬ ‫اﻟﻣﺳﻣوع‪.‬‬
