WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Physical therapy or physiotherapy is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty that, by using mechanical force and movements, remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function, and quality of life through examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and physical intervention.

It is performed by physical therapists.

Physical therapy attempts to address the illnesses, or injuries that limit a person's abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. PTs use an individual's history and physical examination to arrive at a diagnosis and establish a management plan and, when necessary, incorporate the results of laboratory and imaging studies like X-rays, CT-scan, or MRI findings.

Electro diagnostic testing (e.g., electromyograms and nerve conduction velocity testing) may also be used. PT management commonly includes prescription of or assistance with specific exercises, manual therapy and manipulation, mechanical devices such as traction, education, physical agents which includes heat, cold, electricity, sound waves, radiation, rays, prescription of assistive devices, prostheses, orthoses and other interventions. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles, providing services to individuals and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. This includes providing therapeutic treatment in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors.

Functional movement is central to what it means to be healthy.

COMMON REASONS PEOPLE SEEK HELP Some of the needs physiotherapists address include: Cardiorespiratory – prevents, rehabilitates and supports people living with, or at risk of diseases and injuries affecting the heart and lungs, such as heart disease or asthma. Physiotherapists help patients prepare for or recover from surgery, and prescribe exercises and other interventions to improve quality of life.

Cancer, palliative care and lymphedema – addresses a range of patient needs, including treating, managing or preventing fatigue, pain, muscle and joint stiffness, and deconditioning.

Continence and women’s health – manages and prevents incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction in men, women and children. Physiotherapists work in areas including pregnancy, birth, post-partum care, breastfeeding, menopause, bedwetting, prolapse, loss of bladder or bowel control, and with men living with or recovering from prostate cancer.

Musculoskeletal – prevents and treats clients with musculoskeletal conditions such as neck and back pain. Techniques include addressing underlying problems, preventing strain and injury, and prescribing exercises and other interventions to promote mobility.

Neurology – promotes movement and quality of life in patients who have had severe brain or spinal cord damage from trauma, or who suffer from neurological diseases such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

Orthopaedic – helps patients prevent or manage acute or chronic orthopaedic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and amputations. Physiotherapists also help patients prepare for or rehabilitate from orthopaedic surgery, or another orthopaedic hospital admissions.

Occupational health – supports the health and wellbeing of workers, reduces safety risks in the workplace, prevents and manages injuries and diseases, and support workers in returning to work.

Paediatric (supporting infants and children) – aims to prevent conditions such as plagiocephaly (misshapen head) or support a child’s development such as addressing milestone delays with sitting and walking, clumsiness, or hyperactivity.

Pain – manages or prevents pain and its impact on function in patients using a psychologically informed and interdisciplinary approach. Physiotherapists work with other health and social-care professionals to manage pain at the acute stage of an injury or condition, including through identifying psychosocial risk factors that may lead to chronicity.

Sports – prevents, diagnoses and treats musculoskeletal and sporting injuries among all types of people, from professional athletes to everyday person.

SIGNS YOU MAY NEED PHYSIOTHERAPY

Balance and coordination – Physiotherapy can retrain your body to move without falling over.

Disequilibrium can be caused by a multitude of underlying issues, and whilst you may want to work out what the root of the problem is, you might want to challenge the effects and symptoms too. Unless you tackle this issue, you may be more vulnerable to falls and mishaps in the future.

Pain won’t go away – If you are suffering from back or neck pain, and perhaps have strains and sprains, or muscle imbalances caused by core muscle weakness, then there’s no reason to suffer in silence. Often pain can come and go, and it is because of this intermittent nature that people often keep quiet and just put up with it. Physiotherapy specifically targets pain and this, along with increasing mobility, is the cornerstone of what this type of therapy aims to accomplish.

Flare up problems – Do you have an old injury that just won’t seem to heal or completely go away? Do you find that you are okay for a while but then certain activities or even environments can cause symptoms to rear up again? If you didn’t deal with an injury when it was fresh, then it can take much longer to heal, and sometimes that part of you will never be the same again.

However, physiotherapy is designed to address not only recent physical problems, but ones that have built up over time and nag at the body.

Mobility issues – It can be amazing just how much one simple injury can affect your whole body. If you’ve ever had a fracture, then you’ll know exactly what it feels like to have a part of your body that you rely on not function in the way that it should. While it is all too easy to accept that you now have a funny knee and hobble a bit when walking, perhaps because of an old sport injury, for example, there’s no reason to accept restrictive or even painful movement for years to come.

Pain in other areas – Sometimes the point of injury is not the point of pain. You might have initially impacted or had some weakness in one part of your body, only to find that a different part of you suffers, or becomes susceptible to pain and lack of mobility. If you have pain in your body but can’t attribute it to a specific incident or accident, could it be related to another part of you that was injured?

Neurological problems – People who have suffered a stroke quite often need extensive physiotherapy, to learn mobility skills – sometimes all over again. Become aware of your body and how each bit of you is interconnected. If problems of a neurological nature have played a part in your life, then it may be time to reassess if and how this has impacted you and what you can do about it.

Disturbed sleep – If you have chronic lower back pain then you’ll know that insomnia can be a result of that discomfort. Sleep patterns are a good indicator of what is going on inside your body. If you have problems getting to sleep, suffer from fitful nights, or simply don’t feel fully rested when you wake up, one cause could be pain and mobility problems. Sleep is a good indicator of your physical state.

EXPERIENCE Dr Abaub a Fellow of the royal college of surgeons of Edinburgh (UK) is a French and Canadian trained surgeons, he was resident in Strasbourg University training orthopedic program and was exposed to a wide and extensive pathologies of the shoulder, hip and knee.

He had University diplomas while following the training program of shoulder (Paris-University), Arthroscopy (Strasbourg) and Knee surgery (Strasbourg, Paris).

An extensive training was in particularly on shoulder instability and rotator cuff tendinopathies in Haute-Pierre University Hospital.

He completed his higher training in University of Montreal (Canada) Maisonneuve-Rosemont University Hospital, where he did a clinical fellowship of lower limb recontructive surgery, primary and revision arthroplasty of hip and knee, periacetabular and knee osteotomies.

He is a member of the American Academy of orthopedic surgery and other societies.

EXPERIENCE Dr. Zerti is UK board certified in orthopedics with extensive experience in the area of arthroplasty surgeries. He offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment ranging from conservative management to surgical intervention. He specializes in treating all types of orthopedic conditions, including those of the upper extremity, lower extremity, and spine. He specializes in minimally invasive treatment of the shoulder and knee, including rotator cuff repair and dislocation repair in the shoulder, as well as meniscus and ligament reconstruction in the knee.

Prior to joining University Hospital Sharjah, he was the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Head of Orthopaedic Unit in Central University Hospital, Tripoli, Libya. He has also worked in various hospitals in UK and gained significant exposure in the management of orthopaedic and trauma cases.

Dr. Zerti has published and presented his research at numerous local, national, and international meetings on topics involving the knee, hip and shoulder. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, Libyan Orthopedic Association, Association of Osteosynthesis and Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT).
