2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Aspirations. One of my favorite English writers or perhaps better “commentators” is Samuel Johnson. Johnson was a brilliant, witty, incredibly eccentric 18th century savant. One of Johnson’s aphorisms that I keep on a card on my desk is this: “Our aspirations are our possibilities.” I just read it as I started to write this prologue to the Annual Report for 2013-2014. As I thought about what to say that would capture the sense of this past year that thought seemed to me to very aptly describe our school’s life. We have had a terrific year. We have seen our enrollment reach our original goals for the long-term plan. We have 80 students enrolled in the ninth grade and a waiting list. The quality of our applicant pool continues to strengthen. Our college admissions were once again outstanding. Again, this year one of our seniors received the prestigious Questbridge Scholarship given to the top minority students in the country. Mostafa Shanta received the award of a full scholarship to

Yale University. This is our third recipient in four years. Our athletic programs are all reaching new levels of success. Most notable the boys baseball team won the state championship for the third year of the last four and were finalists for the last four years, breaking a Michigan state record for appearances in the final round of baseball. The girls softball team went to the state championship. Girls ice hockey won the state championship in their division. We have started the rebuild of the campus with the construction of our new athletic fields. This project is part of a larger project that will include a new campus center, major improvements to the Cook Road campus athletic facilities and parking. In addition to this building, we must renew and enlarge our endowment to ensure that we can attract and retain an outstanding faculty and invite the most able students to join our community. We have already received almost $20 million dollars in gifts and pledges,

but we must raise substantially more than that to pay for the projects and enlarge the endowment. To make all of this possible and to enrich our program we need the support of our entire community. This is my seventh year as head of school. I am grateful to all of you who have supported us through these years of change. Our commitment to enlarge and enrich opportunities for children in Grosse Pointe, Detroit and the metropolitan area is clear and strong. Thank you all for your support and encouragement. Please come and visit often.

JOSEPH P. HEALEY, PH.D.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES From beginning to end, University Liggett School’s 2013-2014 school year further extended our tradition of excellence. During the past year, the Board of Trustees and school administration worked to build on our school’s accomplishments and create new opportunities for improvement. Guided by the school’s mission and core principles, we celebrated those accomplishments — both big and small. Last year’s Annual Fund rose to new heights with a recordsetting $1.3 million in donations. Our ambitious goal was reached and surpassed thanks to the generous support of everyone in the Liggett family. Donations came in from every member of the Liggett faculty and staff, 77.5 percent of current parents and 14 percent of alumni and many others including aunts, uncles, grandparents and other friends of University Liggett School.

University Liggett School’s successes – past, present, and future – depend upon the continued generosity and support of loyal friends and benefactors.

Construction on our new athletic fields began. This massive undertaking will give University Liggett School premier facilities and fields for all our student athletes. Our fall fundraiser, Liggett Knight, brought in a record-setting $330,000 and our spring raffle raised more than $60,000. These funds go right back into the classroom to help the school advance its academic and extracurricular offerings. University Liggett School’s successes — past, present, and future — depend upon the continued generosity and support of loyal friends and benefactors, people like you who believe in the school’s enduring mission and commitment to excellence. Thank you for your help. Through this Annual Report, we are proud to share with you a snapshot of the vibrant Liggett experience.

GRANDPARENT GIVING Grandparents of Liggett students do more than simply show up for special occasions like concerts or plays or commencements. They are a welcome and vital part of the Liggett family, often seen in the stands at sporting events, at Homecoming, art exhibits and even volunteering in the classrooms. Many of them provide substantial support to ensure their grandchildren attending University Liggett School have access to the best opportunities the school – and they – can provide.

“Contributing to the annual fund is a wonderful way to watch our grandchildren grow through learning. They are our future, and to contribute toward their education is priceless!” – Grandparents of Luke and Avery Slanec

ALUMNI GIVING The generosity of our alumni plays an important part in ensuring our traditions continue and ensure the school’s legacy of educational excellence from generation to generation.

“I give to the Annual Fund because I remain grateful for the education I received at University Liggett School. I want University Liggett School to be there so others can have the opportunity to get what I got. Giving to the Annual Fund is just the right thing to do.” – William D. Dahling Jr., ’74

“ I get a lot of requests for alumni donations, having three degrees from three different institutions: my undergrad school (Middlebury), the university where I got my master’s degree (the American University of Beirut), and the university where I got my Ph.D. (Georgetown). I appreciate the education I received at all those places, but I feel deeply attached to Liggett, because it is where I grew up, where I had the closest friends, and because as a scholar looking back, I profoundly appreciate the quality of the Liggett faculty as well as their personal care and guidance through the rough times of adolescence. I feel privileged to be able to give back to Liggett and her traditions, and to contribute to her future.”

LIGGETT

LIGGETT KNIGHT University Liggett School’s fall fundraiser, Liggett Knight, set a record this year raising $330,000 to support school programs.

“ Liggett Knight, and the record-setting fundraising total, would not have been possible without the hard work of all of the parent volunteers and the support of our sponsors and other friends of Liggett who donated their time, efforts and gifts to this wonderful event to help the school. This was a way for us to thank Liggett for all it’s done for our families and we so enjoyed doing this for our school community.” – Event Chairs Patricia Ilitch and Kristine Mestdagh

The event, held at the Detroit Athletic Club, featured more than 300 items highlights included a Detroit Tigers spring training fan experience, a road trip with the Red Wings, diamond jewelry, a Vespa, a Cartier watch and a trip to Paris. Liggett students also continued their tradition of donating original artwork to the event. Many of the attendees took advantage of the school’s online bidding app that allowed anyone with Internet access to bid on silent auction items from wherever they were. Proceeds from the event provide unrestricted operational funds that support school programs and initiatives for more than 600 students in grades Pre-K through 12.

“We would like to thank all of those in the Liggett family who volunteered their time and support in making Homecoming a success.” – Homecoming chairs Kelley Vreeken and Connie deRuiter

HOMECOMING Alumni, parents, students and friends of University Liggett School came out in full force to support our student athletes on a beautiful, warm October day for Homecoming 2013. Our exceptional groups of volunteers outdid themselves this year with food and fun for all to enjoy. Our teams both triumphed and struggled on the fields, but the Liggett spirit wouldn’t be damped. Boys soccer and girls field hockey both lost, but the football team won 42-20. And at halftime Liggett supporters were exuberant at halftime as the 2013 state championship boys baseball team received their championship rings. Homecoming day included the traditional school spirit parade, live music, the alumni cook tent, crafts and much more. We would like to thank all of those in the Liggett family who volunteered their time and support in making Homecoming a success.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOO! “Volunteering at Liggett for the last eight years been one of my highest priorities and greatest joys. I do not know of a better way to get to know my children’s friends, teachers and administrators. Also, I have met and worked with some of the most amazing parents that I will believe will be life long friends. “Sometimes when you give back, you get more in return.” - William W. Shelden Jr., GPUS 1968

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI RECEPTION University Liggett School this year honored community leader William W. Shelden Jr. with its top honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Shelden, a 1968 alum of Grosse Pointe University School (one of University Liggett School’s predecessor schools), was recognized for his longtime commitment and service to the school. He spent many years on the school’s Board of Trustees, including serving as Board president from 1991-93. His vision and inspiration also has led to programs that further enrich student and faculty experiences. They include a Washington, D.C., trip for 10th-graders that has become an annual event, as well as venture grants for faculty members to pursue unique professional development experiences. He and his wife, Sally, have three children, Jeffrey, Kristin and Andrew, all of whom are University Liggett School alumni.

SPORTS TEAMS WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS University Liggett School student athlete’s boasted tremendous success during the 2013-14 season. We had athletes from 10 different teams competing in state playoffs or state championship games. The boys cross country team was regional champions and qualified for the state finals, while the girls team had two runners qualify for the state finals. Our field hockey team defeated both Grosse Pointe North and South high schools. The football team qualified for the state playoffs for the fourth year in a row. In soccer, our students scored their way to becoming district champions and the tennis team were regional champions who placed third at the state championship. Our athletes who participated in winter sports kept the winning tradition alive. Our girls hockey team won the 2014 state championship in thrilling fashion – a 4-3 overtime win against Cranbrook. The girls basketball team advanced to the state semifinal game, while two swimmers qualified for the state meet. Once the snow finally melted, our student athletes who participate in spring sports ended the school year on a fantastic note. The golf and tennis teams both qualified for the state finals, four members of the track team qualified for the state meet, the soccer team were MIAC and district champions and the softball team was MIAC, district and regional champions. In addition to regional, district and state titles, many of our teams boasted allacademic team honors, including the girls and boys hockey teams and the girls lacrosse team. And the icing on the 2013-2014 season the baseball team won its first Division 3 state championship. Whether on the court, field or gym the Liggett community is proud of all its student athletes for their hardwork, dedication and sportsmanship. We look forward to what the 2014-15 season brings.

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME The Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame celebrates University Liggett School’s rich history of athletic excellence and the 2013 induction class was no different. This year’s induction class recognizes a century of our school’s athletes: John Neville Patterson ’06 DUS, David Rentschler ’52 DUS, George Perrin ’64 GPUS, Laura Khelokian Byron ’87 and Gene Overton, faculty emeritus. Our Athletic Hall of Fame event is not merely a celebration of University Liggett School’s athletics, but a celebration of the school, its predecessor schools and its influence on the lives of all who attend it.

Sure Foundations, our $50 million, six-year campaign, lays the groundwork for our school’s future with four key components – investing in our campus, growing our endowment, raising funds for scholarships and other programs and funding operations. Your commitment to the school, past and present, has allowed us to provide an extraordinary education to generations of University Liggett School students. Susan ‘87 and Michael Azar

“We feel very fortunate to be part of the University Liggett School community and are honored to contribute to the continued success of students attending our fine school. Considering all of the influences and pressures affecting the lives of our young people today, University Liggett School is a positive and encouraging voice.” – H. Richard Fruehauf Jr.

ATHLETIC FIELDS The 2013-14 academic year wrapped up with the start of an ambitious project on University Liggett School’s athletic fields – the first phase of a two-phase project that will culminate with the construction of a state-of-the-art campus center adjacent to McCann Ice Arena. The project gives us an opportunity to recreate and rebuild our fields and develop a state-of-the-art building that blends into our campus and surrounding community. For the first phase, the existing athletic fields will be realigned and rebuilt and converted from grass to artificial turf. A substructure and drainage system will be installed throughout the entire site to address drainage and water runoff. The second phase of the project involves the construction of a campus center that will include a new gym, classroom space, squash courts and a workout area. The building is expected to be completed within 18 months of groundbreaking, with a targeted completion date of January 2016.

LIGGETT MERIT SCHOLARS The Liggett Scholars Program attracts many of the best and brightest to our school and gives them access to a Liggett education. The meritbased scholarship is funded through the generous support of donors who support the Liggett Merit Scholars endowment.

CURRICULUM FOR UNDERSTANDING We learn through experience. At the center of that belief is Liggett’s Curriculum for Understanding, which allows students to drive the process of their own academic growth. From Pre-K3 through 12th grade, students become active participants in their learning experience. They discover their passions. They uncover questions. They propose answers. And, in doing so, they turn information into understanding. This forward-thinking approach allows students to apply their learning, absorb it and then demonstrate what they have learned, both inside the classroom and out. The Curriculum for Understanding is at the heart of everything we do at Liggett. It is our guiding philosophy that comprises five core tenets – critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, adaptability and universalism. Beginning in prekindergarten, the Curriculum for Understanding covers three phases of learning and development in the Lower, Middle and Upper schools.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH PROJECT The Academic Research Project asks students to think about their own passions and interests and to pose and answer a relevant academic question. The project expands beyond the boundaries of the school – some students work with mentors at area universities, health systems and other organizations as well as conduct scholarly research online and off site. The project culminates with a Celebration of Research, the ARP’s signature event during which students present their findings through a series of engaging presentations and other discourses.
