A message from the Head of School “My name is Maya, and this week I changed the world.” These inspiring words, offered by one of our 2nd graders highlighting her class’s project to eliminate plastic straws, capture the very essence of the University Liggett School mission: to prepare leaders who will go on to shape a changing and complex world. Indeed, the 2017-18 school year at University Liggett School offered so many examples of the incredible things than can happen when you combine an innovative approach to education, passionate and dynamic educators, and eager and committed students and families. Building core skills in warm and caring classrooms, our lower school students spent the year exploring interesting cultural connections, from their work with a new and engaging Singapore math curriculum to Skype sessions with other classrooms across the world to the world’s cutest Pre-K Olympics. Their middle school peers, meanwhile, were exploring a dynamic and expanding makerspace and using cutting-edge technological tools to illuminate and illustrate their thinking and learning across disciplines. They enjoyed an educational experience that was designed specifically with middle schoolers in mind, one full of activity, engagement, choice, and, most importantly, joy. Upper schoolers dug deeply into topics across the curriculum, honing the intellectual skills – critical thinking, analysis, and creativity among them – that will serve them well at the outstanding colleges and universities to which they aspire, and beyond. Senior Academic Research Projects investigated an incredible array of topics, from CRISP-R gene editing to graphene supercapacitors to historical adaptions for the stage, and won support, admiration, and honors from intellectual communities and experts beyond our walls. Many members of the wonderful class of 2018 will continue this work as they go to an outstanding variety of colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, The U.S. Naval Academy, Middlebury, NYU, Bowdoin, the University of Michigan and Michigan State, among others. Our sports teams had great successes in our first year in the Catholic League, with highlights being state championships in boys tennis and girls hockey, state runner-up in field hockey, state qualifiers in track and field and golf, regional championships in girls soccer and cross-country, and deep playoff runs in boys hockey, boys lacrosse, and softball. On the stage, our musicians, singers and actors shined in concerts and dramatic productions including Streetcar Named Desire and She Loves Me. One of our senior Players, Antonio Cipriano, finished early to join the premier professional production of Jagged Little Pill in Boston. Not to be outdone, our visual artists and documentarians mounted wonderful displays and exhibitions, and earned juried places in several regional shows. These are just a few of the many wonderful memories of the 2017-18 school year at University Liggett School. Personally, though, I’ll always remember it as the year I was selected to lead the school forward. I could not be more proud to be head of this remarkable community of students, families, educators, alumni, and supporters. I am deeply grateful for the faith and trust of the Board of Trustees, and particularly to David Nicholson, head of the search committee, and to John Stroh, board president. As John completes a remarkable five-year tenure as president, we acknowledge his unfailing decency, his good humor, and his passionate support of University Liggett School. Onward,

A message from the Board of Trustees I am so proud to share with you this Annual Report, which summarizes the 139th session of University Liggett School. It was a year marked by significant transition, as the school initiated and completed a national search for a successor to Joe Healey, who retired with honor in June 2017. A thorough, thoughtful, and inclusive community process helped us to confirm that the right leader was already on our team, as interim head Bart Bronk was appointed to the permanent role. Having served the community for five years as teacher, advisor, coach, and as a capable leader of academic, financial, and operational programs, Bart is well equipped to lead University Liggett School forward. Amid this and several other leadership transitions, the school maintained wonderful momentum. Our opening day enrollment remained strong at nearly 600 students and interest in the school, as evidenced by a record open house and surging application numbers, grew. Strong tuition, fundraising, and ancillary revenues and continued prudence in managing expenses allowed the endowment to grow for the second straight year. The annual fund reached another record – more than $1.6 million – as did Liggett Knight sponsorships and the Spring Raffle. The success of each of these initiatives is a testament to the continuing generosity and loyalty of our wonderful community of parents, alumni, and friends. The Sure Foundations capital campaign reached more than $36 million of its $50 million goal, a milestone that allowed us to break ground on The John & Marlene Boll Campus center in September 2017. What a source of joy and excitement it has been to see this 31,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art athletic facility boldly rise on the north side of Cook Road. Ready for occupancy on August 31, 2018, the facility stands as a monument to the generosity of so many individuals whose names are captured in the pages that follow, but especially to two special individuals. Without the wonderful faith and magnanimous lead gift provided by John and Marlene Boll, this critical addition to our campus would not have been possible. One more transition stands ahead, as I complete my tenure as board president and pass the gavel to David Nicholson, who did an outstanding job chairing the search committee for the head of school. My five years at the helm of the board have certainly had their share of complexity and challenge, but they have also been among the most rewarding experiences of my life as a volunteer. I’m grateful to the wonderful board with whom I have worked, to the school leadership and staff, our loyal alumni and to all the incredible people of the University Liggett School family for your outstanding support. A Message from the Office of External Relations “Change is hard” is such a cliché, but - like many clichés - it has staying power because it’s rooted in truth. Change is hard because our brains are wired to do the same thing over and over, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a worthy – even, vital – endeavor. And the positive outcome of change was evident over this last year in my position at University Liggett School. Almost exactly one year ago, I was transitioning into the newly created role of Associate Head of School for External Relations, a move designed to improve upon our own status quo. This expanded leadership role at the school created an unprecedented level of strategic collaboration between our Advancement and Admissions departments. Was it challenging? 100%. But building a team, plans and processes to consolidate these key departments was worth the hard work of changing. As we report on the positive momentum occurring within the University Liggett School community, this seems the perfect time to share with you how each of the departments that comprise External Relations have been making a difference, too! Allow me to shine a light on the positive change we’ve made over the course of this last year:

Development We had an amazing 2017-18 Annual Fund campaign, and 2018-19 is headed in the same direction! Last year, we raised $1.386 million toward the $1.7 million Annual Fund goal, with outstanding individual group participation: trustee and faculty/staff giving was at 100%, and parent participation was at an all-time high of 92%. We had a successful Liggett Knight along with our annual raffle.

Capital Campaign We had a successful fundraising year and surpassed the $36,000,000 mark heading toward our $50,000,000 goal. We saw the completion of the Boll Campus Center which was a huge milestone. Looking ahead, we’re excited to launch the final piece, the endowment phase of our campaign and generate the funds that ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the school.

Alumni Relations In addition to increasingly well-attended (and always-incredibly fun) alumni events like the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Alumni Weekend, the Alumni Relations department hosted regional events in New York City, Chicago, Vero/Palm Beach and Washington, D.C. And while all alumni leave University Liggett School to make a difference in the world, we seized opportunities to celebrate Distinguished Alumni Keith Richburg ’76 (whose story of global adventures as a Washington Post reporter are fascinating); Athletic Hall of Fame inductees (including an Olympian and an NHL player), and Arts Hall of Fame inductee, Cybelle Codish ’94, a renowned and bursting-with-talent photographer.

Admissions For the 2017-18 admission season, we evaluated nearly 20% more candidates for admission than in the previous year; enrolled 11% more new students; and saw overall student attrition decrease by 25%...all great news! Although attrition was down, and new enrollment is up, the large graduating class of 2018 created a larger gap to fill than in previous years -- but it’s a gap we’re poised to fill. We continue to experience a notable increase in momentum for middle school admissions. Word of Mouth referrals continue to be our best admissions marketing tool, and we are in the process of establishing a formal Family Ambassador Network (FAN) to maximize this strategy.

Marketing and Communications Many important marketing and communications initiatives have come to successful fruition over the last 12 months, including the launch of University Liggett School’s new brand concept, a Tradition of Discovery, and a fresh new brand identity. This undertaking has comprised messaging development; digital and social audience awareness and education communication; faculty training; marketing collateral integration, and transitioning the new brand into facility signage, business stationery and other school collateral. The Boll Campus Center launch, as well as important work around developing and promoting positive coaching and wellness initiatives, have been other highly successful efforts driven by the department (among others in a list too long to detail here!). We’ve experienced significant change this last year – in leadership, in our strategic initiatives, in the way we position ourselves – but none of that has changed our mission as a school to develop students with a keen sense of self who go on to make positive change in the world. To the extent that External Relations has facilitated that mission, it has been truly rewarding!

George Thanasas Lacrosse Field Donors George Thanasas ’17 died unexpectedly just days after graduation. Homecoming Sports and activities were happening all afternoon on University Liggett School’s campus for Homecoming 2017. The varsity football team pulled out a stunning, last minute 27-23 win, on Homecoming over Lutheran North. Lutheran North had been expected to easily handle the winless Knights. However, the Knights kept it close throughout the entire game and scored the winning touchdown on an interception by Ian Narva. During halftime, we dedicated the Joseph P. Healey Field. The varsity field hockey team also won its Homecoming game 2-0 over Greenhills. Kate Birgbauer scored a key goal in the contest. And finally, University Liggett School soccer lost 1-0 to Shrine on a penalty kick. University Liggett School’s families also enjoyed Homecoming activities under the tent: Alumni cook tent, popcorn and cotton candy, pumpkin painting, bounce houses, face painting and more! Liggett Knight For the second year in a row, University Liggett School’s fall auction, Liggett Knight, raised nearly $500,000 to support innovation and technology, academic initiatives, building improvements, athletic equipment and more. The Innovation Fund paddle-raising alone generated $138,000 for innovation initiatives at the school, allowing students to discover new ideas and solutions to problems, and to have access to devices such as 3D printers, laser cutters and virtual reality equipment. We would like to thank everyone who attended, bid on items, donated items, worked on the committee and of course a big thank you to our co-chairs and their families.
