Message from the Head of School Some of them will be physicians in the new world of medicine that is approaching us. Some of them will be the thinkers who imagine and create new ways to make products that are safer, cleaner, and more useful. Some will enter the teaching profession and shape lives that shape lives. Some, perhaps, will enter lives of service in the military, in religion, or in the government.

It was carefully chosen to enhance Liggett’s Curriculum for Understanding by easily creating work areas for collaboration. Bottom: A lot was done over the summer of 2012, and through the dedication of the staff and faculty, all was ready when students showed up for the first day of classes.

Parent Participation It can be daunting to think that tuition dollars do not cover all of the cost of a Liggett education, which is why we have an Annual Fund. Just a few years ago, only about 50% of parents contributed; last year, more than 80% of parents in all divisions gave to make this year’s fundraising the most successful ever. Our parents appreciate the value of a Liggett education and the efforts we take to keep it affordable. Thank you, parents, for taking this to heart and giving so generously.

Faculty/Staff 100 Percent Participation Charitable organizations consider many things when deciding whether to donate to school programs. One of the most important indicators of the school’s vitality is the percentage of giving by the people who are perhaps most invested in the organization such as parents, alumni, staff and faculty. For three years in a row now, every member of our faculty and staff has donated to the Annual Fund. Their unified support is a bold statement of commitment and dedication to our school and its most precious resource, our students.

Middle: Interaction among students from different divisions is one of the great bonuses of having the entire school on one campus. The Senior-First Grade Buddy program has long been a favorite of seniors and first-graders, especially at Halloween, when the first-graders coordinate their costumes with their senior buddy. Bottom: The classroom does not end at the walls. During last year’s election cycle, our youngest students voted on something of great importance to them: What would their snack be that day. Goldfish crackers edged out popcorn.

Grandparent Giving Grandparents of Liggett students do more than simply show up for special occasions like concerts or games or commencement. They are a welcome and vital part of the Liggett family, some even volunteering in the classrooms. Many of them provide substantial support to the Annual Fund, ensuing their grandchildren attending University Liggett School have access to the best opportunities the school can provide.

Fall/Winter, 2012
In the year University Liggett School closed the former Liggett School campus on Briarcliff, the school celebrated the contributions of women to education with a series of lectures.
The Sponsorship Society Members of the Sponsorship Society provide support to the Annual Fund, an annual campaign that strengthens and enhances the extraordinary opportunities of a University Liggett School education, ensures the quality of our programs and supports initiatives designed to engage the entire community.
Our Sponsors are featured in all school
publications, the school website and Liggett’s athletic facilities - on the ice, on a dasher board or a banner at the Francis J. McCann Ice Arena, and on our baseball field. We wish to thank our 2012-13 Sponsors for their generous support last season. Members of the Sponsorship Society: All State Fastener Corporation
With a corporate sponsorship, businesses align themselves with the school for a modest donation. Their money helps pay for improvements to keep our sports teams going.

Liggett Knight, our annual fall fundraiser, set a record this year, raising just about $195,000. The event, held at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, featured more than 300 items from student-made and other original artwork to trips, jewelry and one-ofa-kind events in three different types of auction – fishbowl, silent and live. Many people took advantage of the school’s online bidding app that allowed anyone with Internet access to bid on silent auction items from wherever they were.
Proceeds from the event
provide unrestricted operational funds that support curricular and extracurricular programs for more than 600 students in grades PreK through 12. Event Chairs: Louana Ghafari & Ginny Simon
Middle: Those who attended had great fun with our new bidding technology, which allowed even people who couldn’t attend the sold-out event to be in the race for all sorts of items by bidding with their Smartphones. Bottom: Young alumni, parents, faculty and staff came together at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club for the event which raised nearly $195,000 for the school and its programming.

Top: In November, Liggett Knight, our annual fundraiser, brought hundreds of people together to raise money for the school through silent, live and fishbowl auctions. Liggett parent Huong Reilly painted the picture of the Briarcliff Campus that brought in more than $20,000 at the auction. It hangs in the new Middle School.

Alumni Participation Alumni have many reasons they donate to the Annual Fund. Some attended the school on scholarship and want to ensure future generations of students can have that same opportunity. Others are grateful for the education they received here and still use every day. Others want the school to remain the vibrant place they remember. Alumni participation in the Annual Fund has skyrocketed in the last few years. Five years ago, only 7% of our alumni donated to the school. In the 2012-13 fiscal year, 17% donated. We hope this is also an indicator our outreach and alumni programming are well received and helping our alumni reconnect with their alma mater.

Top: Every year the Upper School English Department brings in a working author to speak with the students and conduct an evening book club event for parents. Learning that even successful writers sometimes struggle with writing is an invaluable lesson.
Bottom: Sometimes the best teacher is another student. Our Upper School students helped PreK students understand germs – showing they know enough about the subject to teach the youngsters about it. And the little students learned in a way that was meaningful to them.

Middle: Liggett graduates leave school better prepared for the challenges of college because of the opportunities provided to them by donations to the Annual Fund. After a few years off, our Summer Day Camp program returned – on its 50th birthday – to serve the needs of hundreds of area kids. Sports camps also provided opportunities for more children to learn and grow in their favorite sports.
