The move of the Middle School program to the Cook Road campus is a significant moment in the history of University Liggett School. When I read through the minutes and reports of the Board of Trustees, I find mention of this already in the 1970’s. So the almost forty-year journey from Briarcliff to Cook Road will be completed in the late spring of 2012. There are a few pieces of this move that make it even more significant and important to note and celebrate. The last physical iteration of The Liggett School is the building on Briarcliff, which was built to house The Liggett School as it moved from the Burns Avenue campus in Detroit to this location. So moving from Briarcliff is also the close of a piece of Liggett history. But The Liggett School represented more than a building. It represented a commitment that in 1878 was fairly unusual. It made a statement about women and the opportunities and possibilities that might be opened to them to access higher education. The opening of the University of Michigan to women undergraduates a few years before this was the inspiration for The Liggett School. The Liggett sisters themselves had graduated from the first class at Vassar College and they dedicated themselves to the work of educating women. It seems almost ancient history, but it is not. The role that colleges such as Vassar and schools such as Liggett played in opening up the world of higher and professional education to women cannot be exaggerated. In particular the encouragement given to women to pursue science and mathematics long before those fields had large numbers of women in them is an important contribution of Liggett. That same tradition continues today as large numbers of the women at the school pursue careers in science, mathematics and related fields. We are proud to have a place in that story of success for women and to continue that commitment to encourage women to pursue their own aspirations rather than be limited by stereotypical thinking or prejudices.
So this move is not the end, it is the continuation of a century and a half of allowing boys and girls, young women and men to find their own unique paths to learning, understanding and contributing to enriching the lives of many. University Liggett School continues “shaping lives that shape lives.�

As we make the physical move onto Cook Road, we carry all that history and the history of many other achievements in arts and writing, and in public service that defined the Liggett experience. We have made it part of the DNA of the University Liggett School and melded that history with the Grosse Pointe University School, Grosse Pointe Country Day School and Detroit University School as the several streams came to form the single one.

Opening Day 2012 will welcome all University Liggett School students in all divisions to a single campus. We are excited about the opportunities that the single campus will create for students and faculty, and mindful of the significance of the single campus school. With the strong commitment of the Board of Trustees, parents, alumni and friends, University Liggett School has moved forward with major facility upgrades and the renovation necessary to create a single campus for our students. The project is the physical manifestation of many changes that cumulatively have created a stronger, more regional future for our school. For the last five years, the Board of Trustees has been working closely with Joe Healey, the administrative staff, faculty and others in implementing the ambitious goals set forth in the school’s strategic plan. An enormous amount of progress has been made. With the implementation of the Curriculum for Understanding, the new and expanded academic, cultural and athletic programs, growth in enrollment and retention and expansion of school support systems, University Liggett continues to be a well-recognized, regional leader in independent school education. None of this is possible without the leadership and support of a dedicated faculty, committed students and parents, and the continued leadership and involvement of alumni in the life of the school. Capital projects bring daunting challenges. Creation of new physical space requires thoughtful and careful planning and significant financial support. We have established ambitious goals for our fund development program – a stronger annual Fund for Excellence, increased endowment, and capital gifts to support our facility needs. Your support is vital and we are truly grateful.

The Fund for Excellence Liggett School’s annual fund and the cornerstone of our development program. The Fund enhances academic and co-curricular programs, faculty compensation and enrichment, and ensures our ability to sustain the daily operating expenses of the school.

For over 130 years, University Liggett School has served our region as a school of excellence, a place devoted to shaping the lives of those who shape lives. In our quest for continued excellence, we inaugurated a merit scholarship program for rising ninth-grade students in 2007. Through this program we recruit the best and brightest students in our region and ask them to carry forward our tradition of leadership and service. Champions for Children Fund Endowed by The Stonisch Foundation As a parent and alumna of University Liggett School, Mary Sue Stonisch ’81 has always appreciated the lasting effect of educational travel. Rather than simply studying a subject in a controlled environment, the learning experience of venturing out to the places of study is lasting and even lifechanging. Thanks to her generous support of the Champions for Children Fund, a group of students was able to travel to China this past summer with faculty member Yun Bai to experience and learn about life in this evolving

nation. Student traveler Katarina Goitz ’12 wrote on her blog:

“We spent these past few days learning even more about the Chinese language and culture. Yesterday we visited the former home of Pu Songling, an ancient Chinese writer whose works were not published until after he died. Now they are famous and have been published in many different languages. The home had beautiful buildings and plants, and we were able to visit his bedroom, garden, and more. We also had the chance to do a little shopping. Luckily, the teachers helped us to get good prices. They would argue back and forth in Chinese about the price of the item until finally the price was low enough. I hope to negotiate as well as them when we go shopping again in Beijing”.

A planned or “deferred” gift can help to ensure the success of University Liggett School by supporting the school into perpetuity. Unlike cash donations, planned gifts are typically made from a donor’s estate rather than his or her current income, and come to the school at the end of the donor’s lifetime. Homecoming
2010
Despite some inclement weather, Homecoming Day and all events leading up to it proved to be a success. The number of attendees exceeded expectations. Families, students, alumni, and friends gathered to cheer on our student athletes - with football, soccer, and field hockey all celebrating wins. Under the leadership of Parent Chairs Kelley Vreeken and Connie deRuiter, many volunteer
parents, faculty, staff, and students participated in the planning of the day-long event. Homecoming
Day included a school spirit parade, performances by our new Upper School Cheer Team, music
provided by Upper School students, an Alumni cook tent, crafts and activities and much more. The Palleschi family supported the event by donating pizza for the entire school and the Wahl family
generously provided the use of two tents.

Our premier fundraising event, A Sunsational Knight, was held on Friday, April 29, at the Roostertail in downtown Detroit. Evening highlights included a strolling dinner, live and silent auctions, a special Rolex Watch Raffle courtesy of edmund t. AHEE jewelers, and music by The Sun Messengers. Three hundred guests, including parents, alums, and friends attended the festive event. Proceeds from A Sunsational Knight supported current year educational and co-curricular programs and our faculty and students in the classrooms. Our Premier Sponsor, edmund t. AHEE jewelers, donated a stunning David Yurman set for the auction. Other exciting items also included getaway packages to New York City, a year-long membership to Yoga Shelter, and an exquisite Tuscan Grille Dinner Package. The evening began with a special Pre-Glow hour, hosted by Rose Marchese, owner of La Jolie Rose, a chic boutique, and HANNAH BEAR BOUTIQUE. Pre-Glow guests enjoyed an hour of cocktails and a sneak peek at auction items while admiring fashions from the boutique. Prior to the event on April 19, the Dirty Dog Jazz Café hosted a Benefactor Dinner. The restaurant covered a portion of costs for the evening including a selection of deluxe food samplings. Benefactor ticket holders enjoyed an open bar and live music by RK Spangler. We would like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Marshall Noecker for generously underwriting the live music performance at the Benefactor Dinner.
