AMBASSADOR’S GUIDE

2015

AMBASSADOR’S GUIDE

What is Ask Me? The Ask Me symbol helps new students to identify where they can go or who they can ask for help during their first few weeks on campus. Ask Me has such a positive impact on the student experience and significantly contributes to the warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere that Orientation and Welcome aims to achieve. It also provides vital information, advice and guidance to students throughout this period.

They make everybody feel welcomed, supported, joyful and content with their experiences as students at The University of Manchester.

What is an Ask Me ambassador? An Ask Me ambassador is someone that wears the Ask Me symbol, whether it is on their badge, t-shirt or hoodie, but more importantly it is someone that has willingness to help and a friendly smile.

What do I need to know? Good news is that you don’t have to memorise everything there is to know about the University to be a good Ask Me ambassador or to make a difference to a student. You can use your existing knowledge, contacts and resources to help you and if you are really struggling to find the answer then you can always take them to one of the Ask Me desks or Ask Me lollipops (see map on reverse for locations), where they are equipped and trained to answer all sorts of questions.

Having someone friendly and considerate who is willing to help is what eased the most daunting anxieties I had.

Is there any training available for Ask Me Ambassadors? It may take a few weeks for students to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings so it is likely that you will be asked for directions to teaching buildings, learning facilities and other spaces. While there’s no formal training for Ask Me Ambassadors, there is time to familiarise yourself with the campus. You can use the map on the inside of this leaflet to help you give directions or answer queries. It may also be useful for you to understand the registration process or learn more about the types of questions you might be asked. The Student Admissions team have drafted a document listing some frequently asked questions and answers. For this document and more information about Ask Me please go to: www.saa.manchester.ac.uk/welcome Get involved on social media by looking out for #askmeUoM. If you have access to an official University Twitter account please help answer any questions.

Registration in a nutshell Every student is required to register each year, whether they are new to the University or returning. Registration is an online process, delivered through My Manchester, and is broken down into steps for students to complete at their own pace. Step 1: Activate your IT account – Students are invited to go to the IT Account Manager to set up their University IT account. Step 2: Register online – Online Registration opens on 1st September for all students, both new and returning. To complete Registration, students should log in to My Manchester and use the Registration portlet found on their home tab. Step 3: Payment of fees – The final step of online Registration is payment of fees. For most students this can be done online before arrival in Manchester. For full details of the payment options available bit.ly/crucialregistrationhelp If a student needs help with registration they can call our registration helpline on +44 (0)161 306 5544 or email ssc@manchester.ac.uk . Step 4: Student card collection – Upon arrival in Manchester, and after completion of online Registration, students can collect their student card from a number of convenient locations around campus (see campus map on reverse). Card collection is available after 14 September. Want to be an Ask Me ambassador? Request your badge by emailing studentmarketing@manchester.ac.uk
