Emerging Scholars Academy SSS was proud to host the second year of ESA! This year the program was two weeks long, with twice the fun. Fourteen new incoming freshman participated in the program engaging in college credit courses. Students completed a study skills class gathering tools for success. A second class prepped students for the ALEKS math placement and

Tegan White-Nesbitt began her studies at UAF in 2010. She originally declared as a music major, studying classical voice. Studying German in this context

helped her develop an interest in foreign languages. During her studies in the music program, Tegan discovered she was interested in German. When she applied for a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange (Continued on page 2)

explored test anxiety strategies. With campus navigation, financial aid literacy, and learning to apply

for student jobs, the intensive orientation, fosters student confidence to help ease the transition to college life. Students met other SSS participants as well as faculty and staff on campus. Students guest hosted the weekly SSS radio show, visit LARS, and go bowling, The students also took the train to Denali and enjoyed a beautiful day at Denali National Park.

Student of the Month: November Over the course of this past summer, Ruth Osborne continued a research project in the lab of Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Guerard, investigating the seasonal variation of dissolved organic matter Ruth with SSS Director, Ginny (DOM) in a small subarctic Redmond, and Vice Provost, Alex Fitts (above) stream. Specifically, samples of DOM from analyzed to determine the winter, spring, and late summer were isolated using compositional an extraction technique and characteristics. Student of the Month: Nov. Continued were also conducted to determine the effect of seasonal differences in DOM composition on the chemical reactivity. The project was funded by the Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity (URSA) for the spring and summer semesters. She presented the results of her study at the American Indian Science and Engineering Society National Conference in November. Congratulations Ruth!

Student of the Month: Oct. Continued Service (DAAD) she changed her major and chose linguistics. She is an actively involved translator and will be published. in the January 2016 edition of "World Literature Today" for her translations of poems by the German writer Walle Sayer. Tegan met him while she lived and studied in Tuebingen, and decided to translate his book since I needed an Honors Thesis topic. Her experience in Germany has helped her shape plans for graduate school, which she wants to complete at a German institution after graduation from the UAF Honors Program in May 2016. Congratulations Tegan!

Omo tutors in biology and chemistry. She received a doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D) from the University of Wyoming and is currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration. She admires nature from a distance and loves anything fashion, beauty, food, and traveling. In her spare time, Omo likes shopping or working on her fashion blog.

Sid is a student in the Petroleum Engineering program. He plans to graduate with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and start a career in the oil and gas industry shortly after. Sid is from Galena, a small town along the Yukon River, approximately 360 nautical miles west of Fairbanks. Hobbies and interests of Sid's include longboarding, snowboarding, flying,

Ken was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He has been in Fairbanks about two years and loves it. Ken used to live near Yosemite National Park in California so he did a lot of hiking, camping, and fishing (and now he loves flyfishing for salmon in Alaska). He likes to travel, learn new languages, and play baseball and tennis. His life-time goal is to visit all 30 baseball stadiums in the U.S. He is studying at UAF to earn a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and do a cancer research about metabolism and genetic markers for proto-oncogenes.

Gina tutors English and Spanish. She was born and raised here in Fairbanks, and absolutely loves Alaska. That is

when she’s not drowning in copious amounts of reading assignments, she loves getting outside (even in the winter time!). She enjoys hiking, camping, running, skiing, and spending quality time with friends.

We're thilled to have Genevieve back as a returning tutor! She tutors Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, and many other courses. She also heads up the MRAP Internship at the museum.

You may recognize David from the front desk! He has made the transition from office staff to tutor for SSS. He tutors Math, English, ES 101, and History 100. We are super glad to have David on our fantastic tutoring team!

We have several returning tutors: Dallon Knight, Nicole Lamers, Alan Lipka, and Keanu Paikai. They can help you in a variety of subjects as well as study skills, test anxiety, and organization. I am originally from upstate NY. I have an Masters in Education from the University of Notre Dame. I moved to Fairbanks in July having just completed a lifelong dream of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail! I immediately joined the Trio team. It has been extremely rewarding to be surrounded by such motivated and resilient students. A few of my favorite activities here include: Shredding at Moose Mountain, climbing a new route at the SRC, catching a glimpse of the Aurora, and drinking A LOT of hot chocolate!
