Kevin Huo came to UAF from California but, far from hibernating in the frozen North, the Honors College student has traveled the world. He went to Finland with students modeling a council of Arctic countries. He rode the Sikuliaq, UAF’s ice-breaking research ship, from Alaska to Seattle. Early in 2020, he flew to Heidelberg University, where he enrolled as a UAF exchange student and is studying in German. Quarantining there to avoid COVID-19 resulted in “a very unique study-abroad experience,” he reported by email. The anthropology and political science junior said UAF has constantly placed interesting projects in his path. “So many opportunities have come along, and I’ve just picked it up and gone with it,” he said.

63% of incoming collegians are first-year students; 37% are transfers. 70% of our students take at least one online course.
Kevin Grimes didn’t have it easy growing up. His family lived in rough places around the U.S. before arriving in Alaska in 2017. His mom passed away during his senior year in high school, and he entered foster care. When he graduated, he had to leave his foster home. He decided to start college early, and UAF was there for him, he said. He’s now studying secondary education and history, and he found a job in the Admissions Office. “I was treated so nicely and like an adult. It was something so rare, having a whole community welcome me like that,” he said. “I knew UAF was for me.”
Two unique features have marked UAF since its earliest days, and Grace Miller has embraced both. She skis on the cross-country team, and, like many students, she lives in a cabin without running water. Miller’s pursuit of the UAF lifestyle, though, comes with an extra challenge. She does it all with just one hand, a condition since birth. And she does it well. In January 2019, she won the U.S. Paralympics national championship standing sprint race. Students like Miller often seek out “dry” cabins to cut costs and live in the woodsy neighborhoods near campus. “The only thing is I have to haul my own water,” she said.

Jenessa Oviok’s nephew was born with a hole in his heart. Watching him face that challenge, while she wasn’t able to assist, helped her decide on a career. “That’s why I want to be a doctor,” she said. Oviok, from Utqiaġvik on Alaska’s northernmost coast, said she chose to start at UAF because it has strong biology and science courses. That will give her a good foundation for medical school. Oviok’s classes also have included one whose subject she’s found very familiar — a course in the Iñupiaq language, which her grandmother taught in Utqiaġvik schools for 35 years.

Kahryn Buchanan didn’t like math until she started taking a college-level course. At age 13. Now she can’t seem to get enough. After earning enough credits in high school to obtain an associate degree from Kodiak College, she came to UAF. She’s studying mechanical engineering, computer science and math, seeking degrees in all three within four years. She’d like to work in space exploration. Kodiak Island has a rocket facility, but she never quite got to see a launch. “Me and my mom used to drive out there all the time. That was definitely a motivator,” she said.
