Welcome to

HELLO Welcome! I’m really happy you’re considering coming to UAF. I work here, and I earned my first degree here. I think this is a remarkable place, and I want to show you a little about why. UAF students are a friendly, downto-earth, free-thinking bunch. They make their own paths — exploring, researching and innovating in and out of the classroom. The opportunities to challenge yourself here in Alaska are thrilling, not only at school but also in life. Ask questions. You can find a lot on our website, and we’re here to help you each step of the way. I want to help you make the decision that’s best for you.

WHERE WE ARE

On the edge of Fairbanks Big landscapes — you know Alaska has ’em. In the state’s center is a land of wide river valleys with Denali and the spectacular Alaska Range on the southern horizon. That’s Interior Alaska, home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Fairbanks

Seasons change fast here as they rush from midnight sun to midwinter snow. Summer days can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter nights will dip below minus 40. Fairbanks still feels its gold rush roots, the days of sled dogs and sternwheelers. But today, it’s Alaska’s second-largest city, with modern road and air connections to Anchorage and the Lower 48. Asking “what’s happening?” always gets an answer. Sports and outdoor adventures? Check. Coffee shops, food trucks, farmers’ markets and restaurants? Check. Art galleries and theaters? Check. If you’re looking for adventure and a unique, down-to-earth community, you belong here. Anchorage Alaska’s largest city is home to the University of Alaska Anchorage, with a campus located just a few miles from the gorgeous Chugach Mountains. Juneau The University of Alaska Southeast, in Alaska’s capital city of Juneau, enjoys a view of glaciers out its back door.

ANNUAL TUITION & FEES

Daniel Dykes first got interested in neuroscience as he watched doctors on the fictional TV program “House.” Now the sophomore from North Pole is studying the subject at UAF. An admissions counselor got him to try UAF. “She told me all of the scholarships that I’d be getting and the research opportunities that I could do here,” he said. A UA Scholar, Dykes now works in labs with the Biomedical Learning and Student Training program. “It is some cool stuff,” he said. “UAF has got some great research going on for neuroscience.”

Like other painters, Ruth Nashookpuk uses canvas as a foundation. But when she’s done, Nashookpuk can lace up her work and apply it to her other passion: basketball. Nike Air Forces, Air Jordans and Vans all have supplied “canvas” for Nashookpuk’s colorful paintings. Nashookpuk, an art and business major, comes from Naknek, a small village on the shores of Alaska’s Bristol Bay. She enjoys UAF’s “super-diverse” environment. “You see new people every day,” she said.

1 : A derivation of the Inupiaq Eskimo word for polar bear, nanuq. 2 : Open and friendly, independent but approachable, grounded in reality and always game. Someone who eagerly draws in those around them for work, study and play. Refers to hearty individuals who are enlivened by the vast dynamic laboratory that is Alaska, where a sense of pride comes with everyday living. Those who live in a place that binds, drives, warms and transforms them, a place known as the University of Alaska Fairbanks — a place that is Naturally Inspiring.

Joe Bifelt saw firsthand how a cultural connection could transform school in his home village of Huslia, Alaska. A school-based dog mushing program started by his grandfather, legendary racer George Attla, changed his relationship with the teachers. “Once they started taking us to the dog yards and to the elders and showing, basically, respect for our culture, we started respecting them more and paying attention better in class,” he said. Bifelt, a senior in elementary education, hopes to use his training and insights as a teacher in rural Alaska. “UAF has a great elementary ed program,” he said.

Military and their dependents are eligible for in-state tuition.

Brittany Narow’s EMT certificate, which she earned at UAF’s Community and Technical College, expands her options as a technician in Fairbanks Memorial Hospital’s emergency room. “I can clean wounds and remove staples and sutures, and help the PAs,” she said. “It’s a nice hands-on experience to help later on.” “Later on” means nursing school for the first-generation college student from North Pole. Now in CTC’s pre-nursing program, she’s applied to the bachelor’s program operated with UA Anchorage. The program’s quality has impressed her. “We have a really nice lab,” she said. “And then for clinicals for nursing, we just go over to FMH, and we can practice with actual patients there too.”

EXPERIENCE

on campus? • First-time, first-year students come from 28 states and five countries. • 65% of incoming collegians are firstyear students; 35% are transfers.

UAF offered the perfect combination for Haley Castillo: a homeland security bachelor’s program, courses in aircraft piloting and a top-ranked rifle team. So the young woman from New Mexico headed north. Castillo started shooting in high school as a freshman. “I’d never touched a gun before,” she said. Now she’s on UAF’s squad, which has won 10 NCAA championships and produced several Olympians over the years. “I like the challenge of trying to keep myself focused, and I like to work hard,” Castillo said of shooting.

As Cameron Blood finished high school in Seattle, his adoptive parents — his grandparents — encouraged him to broaden his horizons. “I said ‘Alaska,’ and my grandma said ‘That is an amazing idea.’” Blood, a freshman justice major, is now thinking of a career in police work. He also enjoys the Model UN club, where he represents different nations in debates. “It’s interesting to argue your case based not on your own opinion but on what that nation would want, what other people would want,” he said.
