An investment shouldn’t cost a fortune. Even with our low tuition, everyone can use help paying for college, so there are grants, scholarships, student jobs, work-study and loans. Find the mix that’s right for you. www.uaf.edu/finaid/

Nathan Feemster wasn’t sure he wanted to go to college. When he decided to try, it was already halfway through the school year. “It was nice that I could start in the spring and not feel ostracized and could graduate on time. That openness helped.” Nathan majored in linguistics but had specific goals other than a degree. “It was really important that I could go somewhere and also work part time and get job experience.” He’s shown here at his student job in the exhibits shop of the University of Alaska Museum of the North. Nathan won several scholarships and grants that helped offset his expenses, including some for students who are the first in their family to go to college, and another that allowed him to study in Thailand for a semester.

Jimin Kim is one of 70 percent of UAF students who get a grant or scholarship to help pay for college. Jimin also has a part-time student job with Video Conferencing Services. “When I graduated from West Valley High School here in Fairbanks I had no idea what I wanted to study. I figured the best option would be to take a variety of classes at UAF to figure out what I wanted to do because the cost was extremely reasonable. After two years I’ve decided to study biology and stay here to finish the degree.”

ACADEMICS AND RESEARCH

Learn and live. Whether Alaska is home or a new beginning, a UAF degree offers the ultimate opportunity: a chance to make a living doing what you love. So choose the path that intrigues you — you never know where it might lead.

While finishing a degree in music education, Kailyn Davis took a rock climbing class from Research Assistant Professor Jeff Benowitz. That changed everything, and now she studies the Wrangell volcanoes as part of her geology degree.

EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS

It’s all here — professors who know you, research grants to study in-depth and study-away programs so you can explore a different world. When Sierra Sommer (right) and her Marine Corps husband were transferred out of state her junior year, Sierra was worried she wouldn’t be able to continue her degree in social work. Her professor, Kim Swisher, worked closely with her to finish through UAF eLearning & Distance Education.
