A JOURNEY of a thousand miles BEGINS
UAF students are free-thinkers, ready to explore and do great things. We research, create, organize and innovate every day. At UAF, study is more than just preparing for exams — it’s getting your hands dirty and experiencing life. Ask questions. You can find most anything on our website, and we’re here to help you each step of the way. That’s our job — to help you make the decision that’s best for you.

Tristan Van Cise, a computer science major from Sitka, helped UAF’s team win the 2018 At Large Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, allowing them to travel to nationals in Florida. Van Cise enjoys UAF’s small program and the close-knit cyber security team. “You get to know each other, and it’s good having that team dynamic, trusting your team’s competence,” he said. / 177 DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES / 81 MINORS / 111 DISCIPLINES /

As a self-described “Army brat,” Chelsea Brown saw many places before arriving at UAF. But then, a semester at sea brought her to exotic locations such as Ghana, South Africa and Myanmar. While on the ship, she took upperlevel biology classes, contributing to her degree. Back on campus, she participated in numerous activities, including a Wildlife Society project that helped block birds from nesting in park buildings. At UAF, “it’s just easy to do things in the community,” she said.
ACADEMICS
ENHANCE your education
UAF is the only Tier I National University in Alaska. U.S. News & World Report 2018
eLearning & Distance Education http://elearning.uaf.edu Honors Program www.uaf.edu/honors/ Study Away https://studyabroad.uaf.edu Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity www.uaf.edu/ursa/ “I really do believe in serving others and putting others above yourself,” Isabel Castro said. That belief brought her to UAF’s social work program from Kodiak. Her family immigrated there from Mexico, and she’s remained fluent in Spanish. At UAF, she participates in a few church groups and works for the academic advising center. “Yeah, it gets cold,” she said of Fairbanks, “But there’s so much to do when it comes to just reaching out and growing in the community.”
John Oulton, a justice major from Bethel, was able to work with state juvenile probation officers during his senior-year internship. He attended court hearings and helped write petitions about how young offenders should be dealt with. “We discuss the cases [and] their transition planning out of detention into these outpatient areas around Fairbanks,” he explained.
Kelly Eagan
UAF hosts one of only six federal centers for testing drones. Races are held in the gymnasium.
Bison are back in Alaska, and Luke Rogers helped put them there. A wildlife biology and conservation student from Fairbanks, he’s been researching bison feeding protocols and assisting state managers as they reintroduce the animals, a project his late father helped start. “It was cool that I got to complete his work,” Luke said. A fan of Alaska’s wild places, Luke also worked for the UAF Outdoor Adventures program during his time in school.

Snow and shine College is more than classes and exams. It’s also friendships, shared experiences and learning to live life on your terms. Join a club (140+), run for student government, find a study group or go to a game! http://alaskananooks.com www.asuafstudentgov.org www.uaf.edu/woodcenter/
Sports for fun and fitness Cheer for UAF’s 10 Nanook athletic teams. Get fit playing intramural sports and skiing, running or walking 26 miles of trails. Climb a wall — indoors, outdoors or, in winter, ice-covered.
EXPERIENCE
Summer Morton, a junior in civil engineering from Petersburg, loves to hit the slopes at a local ski area. “I go there every weekend if I can,” she said, and, as a student, “you get a free season pass.” A natural introvert, she nevertheless worked last year as a student ambassador. That let her meet new people, and she discovered something: “I like this.”
Cody Newman graduated from high school in eastern Canada, but he knew he wanted to attend college in Alaska because of all its outdoor adventure options. On a ROTC scholarship, he entered UAF’s petroleum engineering program, where top-notch professors and small classes offer a chance “to explore your field and your interests,” Cody said. Case in point: He landed an internship with an oil drilling company in Oklahoma owned by a former Alaskan.

A talent for math has Larissa Strunk thinking that she’d like to teach that subject when she returns to Southwest Alaska, where she grew up. She’s also studying German and plans to study abroad at the University of Tübingen. Coming from small villages, Larissa said, she found it a challenge to live away from her family. She’s helped by friends, her advisor, Rural Support Services and her participation in Aarigaa, a Christian group that takes its name from the Inupiaq word for “sweet.”
