O

n behalf of the University of Arizona’s office of Research, Discovery, and Innovation, thank you for joining us for the inaugural Portraits of CCP. We are thrilled to be honoring two

long-time familiar faces at the Center and to recognize their unparalleled contributions. The Center and its successes have been shaped by people like Dr. John P. Schaefer and Tony Celentano, and their impact will be felt for years to come. Our two honorees also highlight the connections between the Center and our larger campus community. Beyond his roles as University President and CCP Founder, Dr. Schaefer has strong ties to departments across campus and Tucson and will leave incredible legacies with each. Tony Celentano is a wonderful example of a member of our University of Arizona community whose long-time volunteer work and commitment has had a profound impact on those who have worked with and visited the Center throughout its history. W

elcome to Portraits of CCP, a celebration of photography and the countless people who have contributed to the enduring legacy of the Center for Creative Photography. In this, our

inaugural celebration, we are extremely honored to recognize the contributions of John Schaefer and Tony Celentano. These contributions, each in their own way, have become the building blocks that have advanced CCP as the premier American institution of photography. What is even more significant, in my view, is their ethic of service – to CCP, the University of Arizona, and the photographic community at large – that will be their enduring legacy of impact and a model for all of us to follow.

R. Brooks Jeffery CCP Acting Administrator Associate Vice President for Research – Arts, Culture & Society

Dr. John P.

SCHAEFER

Dr. John P. Schaefer is President Emeritus of the University of Arizona, where he had an active 21-year career in teaching and research. It was during his tenure as president that he and Ansel Adams crafted a vision for a photographic archive and founded the Center for Creative Photography. Within a year the Center became an international presence in the field of photography. Dr. Schaefer was born in New York City and received a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, where he also met his wife Helen. He joined the University as faculty in the Chemistry department, becoming Dean of the School of Liberal Arts in 1969 and appointed University of Arizona President in 1971, a position he held for 11 years. In addition to founding the Center his achievements include leading the effort for the creation of the Multiple Mirror Telescope and facilitating the University’s inclusion in the Pac-10 conference. Dr. Schaefer is the author of three best-selling books on photographic techniques, and his photographs have been featured in Arizona Highways and numerous other publications. In recent years he has concentrated on photographing cacti, plants, and flowers. A selection of these images will be used in a soon-to-be-released set of stamps through the US Postal Service. Dr. Schaefer’s interests and involvements extend even further, truly meriting him the title of Renaissance Man. An avid birdwatcher, he helped organize the Tucson Audubon Society and found The Nature Conservancy in Tucson. He has also shared his talents with the Tucson Museum of Art, the Arizona-Sonora

Desert Museum, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Corporation. Dr. Schaefer is an amateur astronomer, classical music lover, collector of southwestern art, and father of two wonderful daughters.

Tony

CELENTANO

Tony Celentano is a lifelong photographer and photo enthusiast whose volunteer contributions to the Center span more than 40 years. Celentano’s interest in photography started at a young age, and he began his formal career in high school, working for the newspaper and yearbook while also shooting professionally for Candid Photography. It was in a college photography class that he first saw Little Known Images, the Ansel Adams exhibition that would launch the Center for Creative Photography. After moving back to Tucson with his wife, Ofelia Zepeda, Celentano began volunteering for Dianne Nilsen, the Center’s photographer. This partnership began his decades-long relationship with the Center, where his work has included imaging, print viewings, tours, and much more. His years working as a photographer allowed him to impart a strong technical know-how to guests, and his familiarity with the Center's collection served as a source of enormous knowledge for visitors. Celentano completed a BA in Art Education from the University of Arizona and went on to teach in Tucson for a number of years. He is currently volunteering with the Center’s Digital Imaging Department and continuing to take photos.

I

t is my great honor to recognize and thank Professor John P. Schaefer for his many contributions to the University of Arizona. Chief among them are his work in establishing the Center for Creative Photography,

his leadership as President of the University, and his inspiring role as Professor of Chemistry. As a U of A graduate in chemical engineering and a native Tucsonan, I am proud to be able to contribute to his recognition and to acknowledge how much he has inspired me personally, initially as a student of chemistry when I first knew Professor Schaefer. Later as a photographer I was thrilled that he fulfilled Ansel Adams's desire to establish a center for photographic archives at the university. And finally, two years ago the Center became the repository for the photographic work of my uncle, Benjamen Chinn. Newton Don
