“In the Room” Events 4
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly has documented our world with his camera for more than a half-century, creating a powerful archive of more than a million images and objects that tell the story of that world. In 2018, the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona (UA) acquired the David Hume Kennerly Archive and UA President Dr. Robert Robbins named Kennerly his first Presidential Scholar. On October 11, 2019, Kennerly will partner with UA and the CCP in an event that will both announce this acquisition and premier a groundbreaking new event series. The David Hume Kennerly “In the Room” series will use his photographs and archive to probe some of the most important cultural and political issues of our times. Only Kennerly could create this series since he was always the other person in the room when he made his images. “In the Room” series events will pair Kennerly’s photographs of history being made with their history-making subjects. Event topics will probe our shared history of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st and trace its impact. Moderating the conversations will be scholars and historians, who will help connect these moments to where our nation is today. Examples of topics for this series include the Vietnam War, the final days of the Nixon administration, the Ford White House, the Clinton Impeachment proceedings, the 2000 presidential campaign and its court decision, and Donald Trump’s defeat of Hillary Clinton.

In the Room with David Hume Kennerly October 11, 2019 6
David Hume Kennerly has asked fellow Pulitzer Prize winner Jon Meacham, a historian and journalist, to join him for the inaugural “In the Room” event. This duo will introduce and represent the series concept. Both worked together at Newsweek where Kennerly served as contributing editor and Meacham was editor-in-chief. Together Kennerly and Meacham will explore the central question: How does photojournalism and photography help us understand our society and ourselves? Kennerly’s images of wars, politics, sports, celebrities, everyday life, and culture will be the foundation of that conversation. An innovative video design, created specifically for this series, will provide an immersive experience to maximize the impact of images and bring alive these important historical moments. This signature design will have the potential to be utilized for future uses, including installation as a component of a gallery exhibition, classroom leaning and as an online resource. This inaugural “In the Room” event will premiere October 11, 2019 and is a signature component of UA Family Weekend, which brings together UA’s 45,000 students and thousands of visiting family members. The event will take place at Centennial Hall on the University of Arizona campus. The venue is a 2,500-seat theater in the heart of campus and the city of Tucson. Coinciding with the “In the Room with David Hume Kennerly” event will be the opening of a multi-venue exhibition of Kennerly’s work, including selections of the exhibition installed in “Old Main” (the oldest building on campus and home to the UA President’s Office), and an outdoor installation running along the central green space (UA Mall). CCP and the UA are committed to sharing the Kennerly archive broadly as an important educational resource for students, faculty and scholars at the UA and beyond. Future events in the series will feature some of the most important and recognizable individuals in the country and continue to be moderated by a nationally known historian or journalist. Venues will include UA and in major cities across the country.
