A valued member of our community

onorary degrees are the highest recognition the University of Bath can confer. In the five decades since the University was founded we have been able to recognise some remarkable men and women and their achievements. This commemorative publication is a tribute to all our honorary graduates and your accomplishments. It is a small way to show our appreciation for the part you have played in our first half century and to thank you for your support. Your success and association with the University continues to inspire our community, to reflect the values we aspire to and to be a great source of pride. I sincerely hope that you, in turn, can be proud of your link with this University, its success, its rising reputation and its ambitions for the future. From a field to best in our field

On top of our game In 1966, the University of Bath was little more than a single building in a field on the outskirts of Bath. Today, it is one of the country’s top universities.

f there’s one thing that defines the University of Bath, it’s our ambition. It was only 50 years ago that we received our Royal Charter, and yet today we are a leading university setting the standards for others to follow. Our plan is clear – to deliver worldclass research and teaching, and to provide a nurturing environment for enterprising minds. Our growing reputation, both nationally and internationally, confirms that it’s working.

The Times Good University Guide and 85 per cent of our employed graduates move into the highest level jobs with above average salaries when they start.

Research The Research Excellence Framework (REF), which assesses the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions, found 87 per cent of our research ‘world-leading’. They also placed us 12th in the research quality ranking of all UK universities.

International THE named us in the top 100 ‘most international’ universities in the world. We support international exchange and study programmes, have worldwide business, higher education and research partnerships and almost a third of our students come from overseas.

Teaching Times Higher Education (THE) found our students the most satisfied in the country in its 2015 survey. We also came first in the National Student Survey in both 2013 and 2014. We are in the top 10 for best graduate prospects according to the Sunday Times and

We approach our anniversary as the best university under 50 in Europe (QS Top 50 under 50), and we’re confident that by remaining ambitious and following our plan we can stay on top of our game.

Partnerships We have a strong network of academic, business, voluntary and public sector partners. We are also part of the GW4 Alliance with the universities of Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff, bringing together our individual strengths to address the biggest questions.

Working together Behind every great university is a great community. Thanks to you, we have one of the best.

Community is at the centre of everything we do at the University of Bath. From our interdisciplinary approach to research, to the support our alumni offer current students, we know we’re at our best when we’re working together. You are an important part of that community. Whether inspiring our students or focussing our ambitions, you must never underestimate the part you play in making us the world-class university we are today. Here are just some of the ways that we are working together with our honorary graduates. Dr Jonathan Milner (BSc Applied Biology 1988, Honorary DSc 2013) is the founder and CEO of Abcam, the world’s leading antibody company. In 2015 he gave our University its largest ever single donation of £5m to found the Milner Centre for Evolution, a unique cross-faculty research centre bridging biology, health and education. Peter Gabriel (Honorary DMus 1996) has released 11 solo studio albums, numerous live albums and written music for three films since leaving the band Genesis. He founded WOMAD in 1980 and co-founded The Elders and WITNESS. Peter’s Real World Studios have hosted a University of Bath concert by the Cavaleri Quartet. David Hempleman-Adams LVO OBE KStJ DL (Honorary LLD 1998) is the first man to have reached the geographic and magnetic North and South Poles as well as climb the highest peaks in all seven continents. He regularly organises talks on campus for both the University and local community.

Dr Cary Adams (BSc Economics, Computing and Statistics 1985, MBA 2002, Honorary DHealth 2015) is the CEO of the Union for International Cancer Control, which has a membership of over 900 organisations in more than 155 countries. He recently chaired an event for students and graduates looking for charity, NGO or policy careers, and is the leader of our alumni group in Geneva, Switzerland. Sir James Dyson OM CBE FRS FREng (Honorary DEng 2000) is an inventor, designer and founder of Dyson. Through the James Dyson Foundation he supports engineering scholars and funds our new Dyson Chair of Design Engineering. He also officially opened our multi-million pound 4 West building on campus. Dr Raymond F. Schinazi (BSc Chemistry 1972, PhD Chemistry 1976, Honorary DSc 2006) is the Frances Winship Walters Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University, United States. More than 94 per cent of people with HIV in the US on combination therapy take at least one of the drugs he invented. It is estimated that his work has saved more than three million lives worldwide. The Raymond F. Schinazi International Exchange Programme supports exchange between Emory University and the University of Bath. Pianist, Professor Joanna MacGregor (Honorary DMus 2008) is Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music, Artistic Director of Dartington International Summer School and Festival, and Visiting Musician at Oriel College, Oxford. She gave a recital at the opening of The Edge, our new arts and management building.

Justin King CBE (BSc Business Administration 1983, Honorary DBA 2009) is Vice Chairman and Head of Portfolio Businesses of Terra Firma and former CEO of Sainsbury’s. He has been named Most Admired Business Leader by Management Today as well as Britain’s Most Impressive Businessman in the IPSOS-MORI Captains of Industry Report. He supports some of our brightest sports stars with his King Scholarship.

Our highest honour - 1966 - 2016

Engineering The University of Bath has an excellent reputation for engineering and design, regularly topping national league tables. Many of our brightest students are supported by a scholarship, and since donated scholarships began eight years ago over 1000 students across the University have been given the chance to achieve their best with us.

“I was honoured and thrilled to receive an honorary degree from the University of Bath. A highlight of the ceremony was speaking to a room full of budding entrepreneurs and business leaders as they embark on the next stage of their careers.” Rob Law MBE

Lord Ribeiro CBE (Honorary DEng 2012) was a Consultant General Surgeon at Basildon Hospital and President of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 2004 he was awarded the CBE for his ‘immeasurable’ services to medicine, and in 2008 he was made Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to medicine. In 2010, he was appointed The Lord Ribeiro of Achimoto in the Republic of Ghana and of Ovington in the County of Hampshire.

Rob Law MBE (Honorary DEng 2015) is the founder and director of Trunki, the brand behind the children’s ride-on suitcase. He has never let cystic fibrosis hold him back, working in New York, Taiwan, Australia and for some of the UK’s leading design consultancies before setting up his own company in 2006. He is a regular on the lecturing circuit, inspiring the next generation of British designers, and patron of the Sixty-Five Roses Club, designed for donors who support the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Rob Law was awarded an MBE in 2011 for services to business.

Sir James Dyson OM CBE FRS FREng Honorary DEng 2000

f you were to ask 100 people to name a famous engineer, the chances are Sir James Dyson would top the list. The British inventor’s unique designs have made him, and his eponymous creations, a household name. Sir James’ first invention after leaving the Royal College of Art was the Ballbarrow, released in 1974. It was an ingenious idea which, as the name suggests, replaced the wheel from a wheelbarrow with a ball. Not only did this make it more stable and easier to

steer, it also made it less likely to get stuck in the mud. To some inventors one great idea in a lifetime would have been enough, but not so for Sir James. His drive to ‘make things that work better’ saw him turn his attention to his clogged vacuum cleaner. The rest, as they say, is history. But what all his later inventions, including the Dyson Air Multiplier™, Dyson 363 Eye™ robot vacuum and Dyson Pure Cool™ Link, have in common with the Ballbarrow is their ability to solve a problem in a surprising new way. It’s this originality that is key to Sir James’ success and what makes him

such an inspiration to the engineers and designers in our community. It’s also why our students are so keen to have a placement with Dyson. Through his James Dyson Foundation, Sir James aims to encourage the next generation of design engineers. That’s why the Foundation supports undergraduate and PhD scholars at the University of Bath and funds our new Dyson Chair of Design Engineering, Professor Gareth Jones, to help turn these students' ideas into reality.

Business The Complete University Guide ranked the University of Bath as the best place in the UK to study Business and Management in 2016. A key to our success is the importance we place on practical experience. That’s why over 80 per cent of undergraduates from our School of Management, and 60 per cent across the University, undertake a work placement.

Bharat Shah (BPharm Pharmacy 1971, Honorary DBA 2011) was an early student to graduate from the University of Bath. After graduating, he worked as a pharmacist in Bath, before returning to Kenya where he was a pharmacy manager. He later returned to the UK and became the owner of three independent pharmacies. In 1982 Bharat started Sigma Pharmaceuticals Plc, a medicines and surgical dressings distribution business. Bharat won the 2003 EY Entrepreneur of the Year and 2004 GG2 Entrepreneur of the Year, and in 2006 Sigma was listed as one of the top 100 companies in Management Today.

Brian Roper MBE (Honorary DBA 2009) was a local businessman and long-time supporter of the University. The Roper Student Services Centre on campus is named in his family’s honour. He was awarded an MBE for his services to local charities and, shortly before his death in 2014, both he and his wife, Margaret, were made Freemen of the City of Bath. Roper Rhodes Ltd, one of the UK’s leading independent suppliers of bathroom furniture and bathroom products, is now run by his sons, Paul and Mark, who continue their father’s legacy of support here at Bath.

Margaret Heffernan Honorary DBA 2011

hen people say ‘if you want something done, ask a busy person’ they could quite easily be talking about Margaret Heffernan. Fortunately for us, the Texas born entrepreneur, author and allround business guru still finds time to act as our Entrepreneur in Residence. For 13 years, Margaret Heffernan wrote, directed, produced and commissioned dramas and documentaries for BBC radio and

television in the UK. She also ran the trade association IPPA, which represents the interests of independent film and television producers. Looking for new opportunities, Ms Heffernan moved back to the US in the early nineties where she spearheaded multimedia productions for Intuit, The Learning Company and Standard & Poor's. She then became Chief Executive of InfoMation Corporation, ZineZone Corporation and iCast Corporation. In that time she was named one of the ‘Top 25’ by Streaming Media magazine and ranked in the ‘Top 100 Media

Executives’ by The Hollywood Reporter. Margaret Heffernan has written five books, one of which – Willful Blindness: Why We Ignore the Obvious at our Peril – was a finalist for the Financial Times Best Business Book Award in 2011, and was named one of the most important business books of the last decade. Over five million people have been inspired by her TED talks online. Our community is lucky enough to regularly hear her talk on campus, where she encourages the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders here at Bath. Our highest honour - 1966 - 2016

Science Our research is world-leading. And that’s not just our opinion. REF, which assesses the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions, defined 87 per cent of our research as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. By working together across departments and alongside our partners we are leading the way and changing lives.

“It is such an honour to receive this degree and I share it with all the brilliant people who make TeenTech possible. The world of Science and Tech is expanding rapidly and it's so important to help young people understand how very much they belong here.”

Space scientist, Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE (Honorary DSc 2014), presents The Sky At Night on BBC4 and CBeebies Stargazing. Her television career also includes presenting BBC2’s Do We Really Need The Moon? and Do We Really Need Satellites? She has worked on the Gemini Telescope in South America, codeveloped hand-held landmine detectors and spearheaded work on an optical subsystem for the James Webb Space Telescope that is replacing the Hubble. She also runs Science Innovation Ltd, a company set up to get more children interested in space science. She was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her services to science.

Maggie Philbin

Maggie Philbin (Honorary DSc 2015) is best known as a presenter on programmes such as Tomorrow’s World, Multi-Coloured Swap Shop and Bang Goes the Theory. In 2015, she was voted the fourth most influential woman in IT by Computer Weekly magazine, shortly after becoming President of the Institution of Engineering Designers. This was in recognition of her work with TeenTech, which she created in 2008 to inspire tomorrow’s innovators. She is a patron of the Daphne Jackson Trust and Council of Professors and Heads of Computing, and won the award for Communication and Outreach in the WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement Awards.

Sir David Attenborough OM CH CVO CBE FRS Honorary DSc 1981

t’s hard to write about Sir David Attenborough without using the term ‘national treasure’. Though it is always used with great respect and affection, it seems somehow too limiting for a man whose influence goes far beyond these shores and whose work is as vital and inspiring now as it has ever been. David Attenborough’s broadcasting career spans more than 60 years,

starting in 1952 when he joined the BBC as a trainee. In 1954 he launched the Zoo Quest series, which took him around the world in search of animals. His assured manner and enthusiasm for the subject made Zoo Quest a success for a decade. In 1965 he became Controller of BBC2, which was, then, less than a year old. After seeing the channel established, and the first in Europe to transmit in colour, he was made Director of Programmes in charge of both BBC1 and BBC2. Sir David later returned to programmes and set about making

what was the most ambitious series ever produced by the BBC at the time, Life on Earth. It received universal acclaim and is still shown around the world today. The Living Planet and The Trials of Life completed the Life trilogy in 1990. Along with countless distinctions, Sir David was knighted in 1985, made a Companion of Honour in 1996 and received the Order of Merit in 2005. David Attenborough is an inspiration to so many people, and we are proud to call him a member of our community.

30 St Mary Axe (commonly known as The Gherkin) was designed by Lord Foster of Thames Bank OM (Honorary DSc 1986). His company, Foster + Partners, was established in London in 1967, and since then has received over 700 awards and citations for excellence and won more than 140 international and national competitions. In 1990 he was granted a Knighthood, and in 1999 was honoured with a Life Peerage. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likely that many of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s software developers would have started out on a ZX Spectrum. The 8-bit home computer, released in 1982 by Sinclair Research Ltd, brought gaming and basic programming to a mass audience, and still commands devoted followers today. Sir Clive Sinclair (Honorary DSc 1983) also produced the Sinclair Executive, an electronic pocket calculator, and the folding A-Bike. He was knighted in 1983 for services to industry. Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle (Honorary DSc 1967) was a Royal Air Force officer who invented the turbojet engine. He and two retired RAF servicemen formed Power Jets Ltd to build his engine, and in 1937 a prototype was made. Laws By bringing together our research strengths, we’re able to inform and influence government policy. Our new Centre for Healthcare Innovation & Improvement is addressing the complex challenges facing the UK’s health and social care systems and our Tobacco Control Research Group is making sure tobacco companies are held to account.

“Having achieved absolutely nothing academically in my youth, I was the proverbial square peg in a round hole. I do not take recognition for achievements in any form lightly and the honorary degree bestowed upon me from a university as prestigious as Bath leaves me humbled and extremely proud.” Midge Ure OBE (Honorary LLD 2010) enjoyed success during the 1970s and 1980s in Thin Lizzy, Slik, Rich Kids, and Visage, but is probably best known for the band Ultravox and the creation of the Band Aid single Do they know it’s Christmas? Together with Bob Geldof, Midge organised the global concert Live Aid which brought their fundraising for famine relief in Africa to an estimated £150 million. He remains a Band Aid Trustee and his work with charities has included the musical directorship of projects for the Prince’s Trust and Breakthrough. He is also an ambassador for Save the Children.

His Excellency Khalil Mohammed Sharif Foulathi (BSc Economics 1975, Honorary LLD 2011), is a Member of the Board and Senior Deputy Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. He also acts as Advisor to His Highness Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. He has served as Director General in the Private Office of the late President and has been Chairman of the Board of the Central Bank of the UAE (20082012), and Vice Chairman of Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce. He is a great supporter of our University and President of our alumni network in the UAE.

Dr Aung San Suu Kyi Honorary LLD 1998

ung San Suu Kyi paid a heavy price for her belief in political reform and free elections for Myanmar (Burma). However, her nonviolent struggle for democracy and human rights won her a Nobel Peace Prize and the status of political icon around the world. Aung San Suu Kyi has politics in her blood. Her father, General Aung San, is considered by many as ‘Father of the Nation’ of Myanmar. He helped to bring

about independence from British rule in 1948, but never got to see the country he loved free, as he was assassinated just six months earlier, when Ms Suu Kyi was two years of age. During the sixties, Aung San Suu Kyi moved away from Myanmar, first to Delhi and then to Oxford where she studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. It was there that she met her husband, Dr Michael Aris. Aung San Suu Kyi had two children in England and then moved back to Rangoon to look after her sick mother in 1988, a time of huge political unrest

in her country. In September 1988, the army seized power in a coup and within a year Dr Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest. She would remain so for 15 years, despite her National League for Democracy (NLD) party winning elections in 1990 which were later nullified. In November last year, Aung San Suu Kyi led the NLD to victory in Myanmar’s first openly contested election in 25 years. At immeasurable personal cost she has finally delivered democracy to her country. We are privileged to call her a part of our community. Our highest honour - 1966 - 2016

The Rt Hon The Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon KBE PC (Honorary LLD 2001) served in the Royal Marines between 1959 and 1972 and saw active service as a Commando Officer. In 1965, he commanded a Special Boat Section in the Far East. He later joined the Foreign Office and in 1979 stood as Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Yeovil. He was elected Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 1988 and was appointed as a Privy Councillor. He received a KBE in 2000 and a peerage in 2001. Lord Ashdown was awarded the GCMG in 2006, for his work in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Hon Mrs Mary Robinson (Honorary LLD 2009) was President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997 and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002. She has served as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for both the Great Lakes region of Africa, and Climate Change. She is currently the Patron of the Board of the Institute of Human Rights and Business and is a board member of several organisations including the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and the European Climate Foundation. She is President of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice. The Rt Hon The Lord Jenkins of Hillhead OM (Honorary LLD 1978) was Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Deputy Leader of the Labour party when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister. In 1976 he was appointed President of the European Commission, the only British holder of this office to date, and in 1981, as one of the “Gang of Four”, he formed the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He received a life peerage in 1987 and, in addition to his political career, he was also a noted historian, biographer and writer. Our highest honour - 1966 - 2016

The Lord Tugendhat (Honorary LLD 1998) was the Chancellor of our University between 1998 and 2013. He has been a member of the House of Lords since 1993, is a member of the EU Select Committee and was Chairman of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust until December 2011. He is a former Chairman of Abbey National plc and of Blue Circle Industries plc. He was a VicePresident of the European Commission and before that a Conservative MP for the City of London and Westminster South. He was knighted in 1990 and is a Freeman of the City of London. As Chancellor, he presided over the graduation of nearly half of all students who have been through the University.

Jack Rowell OBE

Ellie Simmonds OBE (Honorary LLD 2013) is a four-time Paralympic champion who currently holds 10 world records. She won her first Paralympic medal at just 13 years old, became the youngest winner of the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2008 and then the youngest recipient of an MBE at the age of 14. Ellie has continued to dominate her sport, winning 14 World and 10 European titles. She was awarded an OBE in the 2013 New Year Honours and is an inspiration to our Olympic and Paralympic athletes who train at Bath.

Sir Ian Botham OBE (Honorary LLD 2008) is a former England test cricketer and test team captain, current cricket commentator and Somerset stalwart. With 14 centuries and 383 wickets in Test cricket, he is generally regarded as England’s greatest ever all-rounder. He has been a prodigious fundraiser for charitable causes, undertaking a total of 12 long-distance charity walks. Sir Ian was knighted for his services to charity in 2007 and was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.

Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE (Honorary LLD 2010) has won 16 medals in five Paralympic Games, including 11 golds, and was a six times winner of the London Wheelchair Marathon. She holds 30 world records, is a patron of the British Paralympic Association and was appointed to the House of Lords as a non-party political cross bench peer in 2010. Jack Rowell OBE (Honorary LLD 1994) is a former Rugby Union coach of both Bath and England. Bath won eight John Player/Pilkington Cups and six League Championships and England, two Five Nations Championships with one a Grand Slam, when he was team coach. In percentage terms of games won, Rowell is England's most successful Rugby Union coach and was awarded an OBE for services to the game. Until last year, he was a member of the University’s School of Management Advisory Board, sharing the experience he’d gained during a successful business career.

Letters We know that inspiration can strike at any time. That’s why we were the first university in the UK to open our Library and Learning Centre 24 hours a day. With over 500,000 books and periodicals, journals, databases and a substantial archive, we’re confident that we’re giving our students the tools they need to succeed, when they need them.

Dame Maggie Smith CH DBE (Honorary DLitt 1986) has had a prodigious film and television career spanning over 60 years. She has appeared in over 50 films and has won numerous awards for acting including two Oscars, five BAFTAs, three Emmys, three Golden Globes, four Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Tony. She also received the BAFTA Special Award, the BAFTA Fellowship, and the Special Olivier Award. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1990 and Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2014.

Fay Weldon CBE FRSL (Honorary DLitt 1988) is a novelist, playwright, screenwriter and essayist. Her novels include The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, Puffball and The Cloning of Joanna May, and more recently, a trilogy set in Edwardian times, Love and Inheritance. In 1971, Weldon wrote the first episode of the landmark television series Upstairs, Downstairs, for which she won a Writers' Guild award for Best British TV Series Script. She is currently Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and ‘lives on a hilltop in windswept Dorset’.

Sir Terry Pratchett OBE Honorary DLitt 2003

ir Terry Pratchett knew about Death. He knew Death likes cats and curries and he knew he rides a horse called Binky. He also knew that there was only one way to face his own – with the same wit and wisdom that made him one of the UK’s best-selling authors of all time. With more than 85 million sold worldwide in 37 languages, if you don’t own one of Sir Terry’s books yourself, you probably know someone who does. His unique mix of the fantastical and the

comical made him the UK’s best-selling author of the 1990s. The Carpet People, his first novel, was published in 1971, but it was his first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, that really captured the public’s imagination. Discworld would be the setting for a further 40 novels. Sir Terry won countless awards for his writing, including the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2010. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998, and in 2009 was knighted for services to literature. In December 2007, Sir Terry announced that he was suffering from

Alzheimer's Disease, and spent the remainder of his life as a campaigner for greater understanding of the condition. In 2012, he helped the BBC Lifeline team promote the work of the Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE). RICE is an internationally renowned dementia research and treatment centre affiliated with the University of Bath. Sir Terry’s final tweet on 12 March last year simply read ‘The End’. But his work, as an author and campaigner, will live on. We are proud to call him a member of our community.

I look forward to continued cooperation between the University and educational institutions in Jordan.” HRH Princess Sarvath El Hassan Professor Jeff Thompson CBE (Honorary EdD 2014) has made an enormous contribution to the development of education, holding numerous leadership roles including Chair of the first working group charged with developing the national curriculum. His involvement in the development of the International Baccalaureate led to the Jeff Thompson Research Award, which funds teachers worldwide. He is on the board of numerous international schools, and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Alliance for International Education. Professor Thompson has been at the University of Bath since 1979, in roles including Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Malcolm Arnold OBE (Honorary EdD 2013) is one of the most successful athletics coaches in the UK. In a career that spans more than 40 years, the athletes he has coached have won more than 60 major championship competitions. He coached his first Olympic winner, John-Akii Bua from Uganda, at the 1972 Olympics. Since then, here at the University, he has coached, amongst others, Colin Jackson, Dai Greene and Eilidh Child. He has been involved in 12 Olympic Games – from Mexico 1968 to London 2012. He is Head Coach of the British Athletics Regional Performance Centre here at the University.

HRH Princess Sarvath El Hassan Honorary EdD 2015

rincess Sarvath El Hassan is a fearless and unwavering educational pioneer, transforming the opportunities available for young people within Jordan and throughout the region. Her Royal Highness founded the Amman Baccalaureate School (ABS) in 1981, the first school to offer the International Baccalaureate in the Middle East. Many of its programmes have now been adopted nationally, including the El Hassan Youth Award (an affiliate of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme). She still chairs its

Board of Trustees and, after 35 years, ABS continues to break ground in achievement and innovation. She served on the Council of Foundation of the International Baccalaureate Organization for many years, with whom she maintains close ties, most recently opening their new Examination Centre in Cardiff. The Young Muslim Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association (YMWA), of which she was a patron, founded the YMWA Princess Sarvath Community College to provide young women from disadvantaged backgrounds with the professional skills needed to earn an independent living. Her Royal Highness established the Jordanian United World Colleges

National Selection Committee, was a member of the International Council of the UK based Voluntary Services Overseas, and of the Council of UNESCOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International Fund for the Promotion of Culture. She is President of the Centre for Phonetics Research at the University of Jordan, Patron of the Malath Foundation for Humanistic Care and Patron of the Jordanian Association for Phenylketonuria and the Jordanian Osteoporosis Prevention Society. Her Royal Highness recently helped secure an agreement between ourselves and the ABS in Jordan, as part of our wider partnership with the region.

Arts The University of Bath is commited to the arts. The Edge, our new arts and management centre, not only offers a vibrant programme of visual arts, theatre, dance and music to our community, but also gives those students who come to us with a love of the arts, a space in which to pursue their passion. “I was delighted to receive the honorary degree from such a prestigious university as Bath. Travelling through the last 45 years of pop culture has been an incredible experience for me, and no doubt many of Bath’s students have helped me to develop this amazing event. I follow the progress of the University’s development with great interest and excitement!” Michael Eavis CBE (Honorary DArts 2004) is an English dairy farmer best known as the founder of Glastonbury Festival, which takes place on his farm in Pilton, Somerset. Inspired by a visit to the Bath Blues festival in the late 1960s, Michael decided to have a go at it himself in 1970. The Festival did not make a profit for several years, but when it did, Michael began to look for good causes to support. Now, the Festival aims to raise two million pounds each Festival year in aid of Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid, as well as hundreds of local causes.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa ONZ DBE AC (Honorary DMus 2005) is a worldrenowned soprano from New Zealand. Her portrayal of the Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro dazzled audiences in 1971 and she continued to do so for 40 years in her opera career, receiving countless accolades for her singing from around the world. Though no longer singing opera, she frequently performs in concerts and recitals and supports young opera singers in launching their careers.

Sir Ian McKellen CH CBE Honorary DArts 2001

rom Gandalf to Estragon, Lear to Mel Hutchwright, few actors have made such a broad range of characters their own. It’s hardly any wonder Sir Ian McKellen is considered one of the world’s finest actors. Sir Ian McKellen has won almost every film, theatre and television award available. And if he hasn’t won them, he’s been nominated for them, including twice for an Oscar. Becoming a professional actor in 1961 after reading English at Cambridge,

Sir Ian undertook three years’ apprenticeship in regional theatre companies before making his West End debut in A Scent of Flowers. In 1965 he became a member of Sir Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company and in the 1970s and 1980s performed frequently at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, where he played several leading Shakespearean roles including Macbeth and Iago. Both Macbeth and Othello were adapted into television films, and in 1995, he played the title role in the film version of Richard III, which he

co-produced and co-wrote. Sir Ian has starred in numerous films during his career: three of his favourites are Gods and Monsters, Richard III and, most recently, Mr Holmes. Sir Ian was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1979, knighted in 1991 and, in 2008, was made a Companion of Honour for services to drama and equality, for his work as co-founder of the LGBT rights lobby group, Stonewall. He was a member of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup, the year he also won the Ballon d'Or. Sir Bobby made his debut with Manchester United in 1956, and played almost all of his club football with the team. After visiting Cambodia in 2008 he became involved in the many challenges faced by communities living in areas contaminated by landmines. Three years later he founded the charity Find A Better Way, which funds research, here at Bath, into improved landmine detection technology, mine-avoidance education for people who live in former conflict zones, and research into improved prosthesis and regenerative medicine.

John Cleese (Honorary DClinPsy 2016) is known the world over as an actor, comedian, writer and film producer. He is a founding member of the hugely influential Monty Python team who produced Monty Python's Flying Circus and films including Monty Python’s The Life of Brian and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He co-wrote and starred in the sitcom Fawlty Towers in the seventies, during which time he also co-founded a series of benefit shows, The Secret Policeman's Ball, to raise money for the human rights organisation, Amnesty International. With the family therapist, Robin Skynner, he wrote Families and How to Survive Them and Life and How to Survive It.

1966 - 2016 From a field to best in our field

oday we are known as a world-class university in a World Heritage city, but we started out as neither a university nor in Bath. To discover our origins you have to go back over 150 years, and a few miles north west, to the Bristol Trade School. The School was established in 1856 to provide industrial training to the growing middle classes. Thirty years later, under the patronage of the Society of Merchant Venturers, it became the Merchant Venturers' Technical College. For the next 70 years it expanded its remit, until becoming the Bristol College of Science and Technology in 1960. It was at this time that the principal, George Moore (later Dr George Moore, our first Vice-Chancellor), began looking for a site in Bristol in which to expand the College. But a chance encounter with the Director of Education for Bath, H W Brand, was to change everything.

Mr Brand suggested that rather than looking in Bristol, Mr Moore should consider Bath, and that he knew of the perfect spot: 150 acres of land on a hilltop overlooking the city, called Claverton Down. Building work began that year, the first building (now known as 4 South) was completed two years later and we received our Royal Charter, making us a university, in 1966. We have achieved so much in our short lifetime thanks to the ambition and dedication of our community of students, staff, alumni, honorary graduates and friends. Dr Moore and Mr Brand would be proud of what their chance encounter has helped us to achieve, and we hope you are too.
