UB Research Published Internationally: A Study of Female Entrepreneurs in Belize

T

he Asian Jo u r n a l of Social Sciences and Management S t u d i e s published the research entitled “A Study of Female Entrepreneurs in Belize” which was done by Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Management Dr. Somanadevi Thiagarajan and Social Sciences (FMSS) Dr. Somanadevi Thiagarajan and now alumnus Gerson Aldana.

4

Abstract The research was carried out to understand, analyze and document the profile of female entrepreneurs in Belize and to identify the factors that contribute to their success. The data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed by using SPSS. The profile studied include age, education level, income, number of children, marital status, business type, etc. The factors that contribute for success of the female entrepreneurs were measured by using variables such as profits, social status, self-achievement, quality of product and services. To improve success and life style it is recommended that the female entrepreneurs engage in continuous training and complete tertiary level education. In order to encourage more women to become entrepreneurs, financial institutions should create micro financing outlets to provide credit facilities along with sound business and legal advice. Citrus Grafting in a Test Tube making disease-free plants for variety collections Stephen Williams1, Fermin Blanco2 and Shen-Yang (Orlando) Li3 Micropropagation Lab Manager, University of Belize; 2Belize country representative International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA); 3Specialist based in Central Farm International Cooperation & Development Fund. 1

U

nder the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA, for its initials in Spanish)/Taiwan International Cooperation & Development Fund (ICDF) Central American project to control Huanglongbing (HLB) - a devastating citrus disease - Ju-Ming Yang, an expert from the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute, conducted a training course at the University of Belize’s (UB’s) Central Farm micropropagation laboratory during the month of November 2015. He trained three Belizean scientists in the technique of citrus shoot tip grafting (STG). This technique is used to produce disease-free* plants, from diseased trees, for use in national citrus germplasm / variety collections. It is similar to grafting done in a nursery but uses smaller amounts of tissue and is done in a laboratory under a microscope. The germplasm mother plants produced provide budwood for establishing budwood multiplication blocks which in turn are used to supply bud-eyes for nurseries certified under the Belize Citrus Certification Programme (BCCP). In Belize, a germplasm collection is maintained by the Citrus Growers Association but plant material for this collection is currently imported from California. Establishing this STG technique in Belize will give the country the capacity to produce its own plant material for its germplasm collection. STG is done under sterile conditions. The growing point of the bud (or meristem which is just 0.2 mm wide and disease-free) is Shoot tip grafts cut from tree shoots and inserted into the side of a rootstock seedling. Once a shoot has grown out of the graft

16

the plant is potted-on in a nursery to grow into a larger plant. This two week STG training w a s provided to the OIRSA technician Alexander Mendoza, who is stationed at UB’s micropropagation laboratory, UB’s Senior Laboratory Technician, David Guerra and CGA’s Laboratory Technician, Manuel Garcia. Both UB and CGA are developing STG technology for Belize’s citrus industry. This will make Belize the only country in Central America with this capacity and in addition to providing diseasefree plants for national variety collections the technique will be used to “clean-up” local Belizean favorites such as King Mandarin. UB expresses gratitude to Taiwan ICDF for funding the training and for providing the expertise; to OIRSA for facilitating much of the logistics; to Citrus products of Belize Ltd. and CGA for providing fresh shoots to work with and for the technicians who worked diligently to complete the training. The training is a key component of a collaborative agreement / Memorandum of Understanding signed between, UB, OIRSA, CGA, ICDF, Ministry of Agriculture, Belize Agriculture Health Authority and the Ad-hoc Committee of Citrus Nurserymen – being implemented from 2015 to 2016 – to develop additional capacity within Belize to combat HLB / greening disease in the citrus industry.

The competition is hosted every year and UB has officially participated for the past 5 years. Preparations for this competition included students participating in the UB Engineering Department’s 8th Annual Macaroni Competition held on 13th and 14th October at the University’s Freetown Road campus in Belize City. The top two teams represent UB in Chetumal. These students are second year engineering students and they competed with 3rd and 4th year students at the ITCH. The students were among thirty- four teams who competed in a challenge to design and build a scaled structural model of a bridge. The model had to be built to meet certain specification and students were limited to time, size and types of materials. Materials used included silicon glue, macaroni, plastic bottles and aluminium tin cans. At the end of the two day competition, the team comprised of UB students Irvin Ruiz, Brandon Williams, Kyle Middleton, Timothy Gentle and Staelens Sanchez came out victorious. They won the competition based on the load the model withstood, the efficiency based on the weight of the model and the effective use of the given materials. The winning prize was awarded Diplomas, five tablets, and a cash prize of 5000 pesos. The structures competition at ITCH, in addition to exposure to an international competition, it also gives UB students the opportunity to interact with past graduates of the Engineering Department studying at the Instituto Technologico as well as develop new friendships. The UB contingent also gets the opportunity to build cordial relationship with the Faculty from the Departmento de Ciencias de la Tierra of the Instituto Tecnologico De Chetumal.
