Welcome Welcome to our seventh publication of Music ‘What’s On’. Our programme covers a wide range of musical subjects including a very special evening where we are pleased to welcome the principal conductor of the Radio Romania Chamber Orchestra and professor of conducting at the National University in Bucharest who will be visiting Chichester to conduct the University Symphony Orchestra. As in past years the Funtington Music Group are very kindly sponsoring a student showcase, where students compete for The Robert Headley Memorial Fund Prize and this semester we are delighted to host the John Warner Memorial Award, a competition open to singers aged 19 to 29. David will introduce his performance with an analysis of the musical elements which make up this masterpiece of baroque art.

Sebastian Mueller - Violin/Viola German violinist Sebastian Mueller teaches violin, viola and chamber music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, and at the University of Chichester, as well as in Germany and is also giving master classes within and outside Europe. Having studied at music colleges in Berlin, Amsterdam, London and Hannover he gained his education from Ina Kertscher, Stephan Picard, Detlef Hahn, Renaud Capucon, Pinchas Zukerman and Nobuko Imai. As a soloist he has appeared in many European countries as well as on Polish and Russian television and BBC radio. In the “Südwestdeutschen Kammermusikwettbewerb Carel Kunc” and in the “Bundeswettbewerb Jugend Musiziert” he was awarded several prizes for his performances on the violin and the piano. He is a prize winner of the Ivan Sutton Chamber Music Competition London. Nico de Villiers - Piano The South African born pianist Nico de Villiers is an accompanist and coach based in London, England. He holds degrees from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Glasgow, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He regularly accompanies singers and instrumentalists in recitals and competitions and accompanies in the private studio of Barbara Bonney in Salzburg. Since his Kennedy Center debut in Washington D.C., Nico has performed across the UK and Europe, most recently at the Barbican Centre in London and the Birmingham Symphony Hall. He has been engaged as coach at the International Music Academy in Pilsen, Czech Republic as well as the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. He has worked as coach at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, the Royal College of Music, Stockholm, Sweden and the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Free State in South Africa. John Law ("One of Europe's most adventurous pianists" – The Times) and rising new piano star Mark Pringle will be performing pieces from their new stunning CD, 33JAZZ219. This recording features, alongside some of their original compositions, compositions by Bach, Metheny, Lyle Mays and Cole Porter. Powerful pianism and delicate, contemporary harmonies… Known for straddling both classical, in which he started, and jazz, John Law’s aim is to make the improvising sound like it’s been composed and the compositions as simple and direct as if they’ve been improvised there and then. In addition, he brings to jazz a love of wide dynamic range and different touch at the piano, something which can best be experienced in the solo format. As well as an interest in advanced harmony and rhythm, John’s compositions and playing also explore harmonic simplicity and straight grooves. John Law has played at over fifty festivals worldwide and recorded more than twenty five albums, working with musicians as diverse as Andy Sheppard, Tim Garland and Evan Parker. Mark Pringle is a rising star of the British jazz piano scene. In 2011 he won a scholarship to study at Birmingham Conservatoire and is an ex-student of John Law’s. They recorded the album ‘This is together’ in 2010, featuring, (alongside their own compositions) works by Bach, Metheny, Lyle Mays and Cole Porter.

Hailed by reviewers as "one of the finest living pianists", University of Chichester’s own Head of Keyboard, Jonathan Plowright, returns to the Chapel to present what will no doubt be a fascinating and varied programme. Jonathan is recognised globally as a truly exceptional pianist attracting unanimous praise wherever he performs. His last nine CD recordings have been exclusively for Hyperion records, the UK’s largest independent classical music label. Last year his commemorative 'Hommage à Chopin' CD was in the official UK classical music chart top twenty, and won many awards including the prestigious Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in Germany, Diapason D'Or in France, Gramophone Editor’s Choice, and CD of the week on both ClassicFM and Australian ABC ClassicFM.

Baroque Performance Workshop for Instrumentalists and Singers With tutors Sophie Middleditch and David Pollock

If you would like some advice about Historically Informed Performance (HIP) which could significantly enhance your knowledge (and your assessment marks!) you should attend this event. Members of The Parnassian Ensemble and tutors at the University of Chichester, Sophie (baroque flute, silver flute and recorders) and David (harpsichord) return for their second workshop offering performing and teaching expertise to students who aspire to play in authentic baroque style. Featuring: Tassos Spiliotopoulos - guitar Yaron Stavi - bass Asaf Sirkis - drums/compositions In his long and playful partnership with saxophonist Gilad Atzmon, a recent and more delicate one with piano virtuoso John Law, and in many other settings from improv to fusion, Israeli expatriate Asaf Sirkis keeps confirming that he's one of the British jazz scene's most creative drummers. Law says that the way Sirkis just touches a cymbal is an inspiration, long before he's played a beat. North African as well as Middle Eastern music played a big part in his early listening, and he was a bass guitarist as well as a drummer in his teens, so rock and fusion music from the Police to Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra went deep with him. This trio generates a compelling intensity, and the leader's percussion responses to their ideas are dazzling eruptions of drum mastery. Written by John Fordham.

He will be joined by up and coming jazz stars, Oz Dechaine on double bass and Richard Carter on drums, who are both studying at the university. The tragic love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas ends with the despair of Dido's famous lament – as Aeneas is tricked into leaving her. West Sussex Opera will be presenting a stellar international cast for Purcell's Dido & Aeneas. This performance will be conducted by Jon Grave with the joint professional & student orchestra and chorus.

Following last year’s inaugural event, this is another opportunity to hear exciting new creations in a variety of styles from across our campus and beyond. This year’s concert will draw its inspiration from the idea of ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, with new music composed in response to items in the University’s Otter Collection, some of which will be on display. Expect to be entertained, surprised and possibly bewildered by new compositions by students and staff performed by the University’s Contemporary Music Group and enterprising local ensemble CoMA Sussex.

Jason Howard (Counter-tenor) began his singing career when he started at Chichester University in 2010, since then his Voice has flourished under the guidance of Philip Drew and Susan Legg. Having been involved in the Church for many years, his love for sacred classical music has grown, giving him inspiration to perform various pieces within his Recital. The evening will be a mixture of old and new, great and small. Jason is joined by other soloists and accompanied by The Matthias Consort; a group of experienced Baroque Orchestral players which was founded in September 2011.

Year 3 Musical Theatre BA (Hons) Students Present
Into the Woods A world-wide stage sensation, Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods has won multiple awards including an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival in 2010. Into the Woods is witty, dark and intelligent, mashing-up the stories of fairy tale characters that we have grown to love including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella, to name but a few! With all the characters focused on the same goal of getting their wish, the woods cast a giant shadow over them all, as they each go Into the Woods to make their dreams come true. With great cunning and a few storylines that you definitely won’t find in the original fairy tales, at first they succeed. The MA Performance students present a mix of jazz and classical music featuring a jazz trio, soulful singing, both jazz and classical guitar, and a representation of classical and romantic piano repertoire. This concert will give the audience a flavour of what these students are preparing for their final recitals at the end of August.

Some well-loved European favourites will also be performed in this semi-staged concert.

Students from the University of Chichester Music Academy (UCMA) come together in their Horsham base for a joint concert featuring solos, ensembles, bands and new compositions in a mixture of styles.
The John Warner Memorial Award Saturday 31st March 2012 Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester The John Warner Memorial Award competition is open to singers aged 19 to 29 on the date of the competition. With a first Prize of £1000 and second prize of £500, the winner of the First Prize may also be offered a performance in the 2013 Chichester Festivities, one of the South of England's leading Arts Festivities which takes place traditionally during the early part of July each year. Chichester Festival for Music, Dance & Speech, Founded 1955. Registered Charity number 1040782. This Festival is affiliated to the British Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance & Speech of which her Majesty the Queen is Patron. With international adjudicators, the competition itself will take the form of a Recital Class, with singers being required to present a programme - maximum performing time 20 minutes - including one each of the following: a) Lieder, b) English song and c) French song. Singers are expected to provide their own accompanist. Titanic Commemoration Concert Saturday 14th April 2012, 7.30pm Southampton Guildhall, West Marlands Road, Southampton, SO14 7LP Tickets are available from the Southampton Guildhall Box Office, 023 8063 2601 On the exact anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, the UCMA appear alongside the Southampton Concert Orchestra and Contemporary Music for All, to perform a concert of classical and contemporary music honouring the tragic event one hundred years ago to the day. Highlights of the concert will be Dvorak's New World Symphony, representing the hopes and aspirations of many of those passengers who set off for a better life the New World, and a newly arranged version of Gavin Bryars' The Sinking of the Titanic which re-creates the sounds and spirits of the last moments of the ill-fated voyage.

It is the beginning of the 20th Century and the onset of war is looming. As the nightlife of London comes out to play, a fatalistic affair of the heart ignites, as the city around them burns. City Walls is an exciting new arts initiative, founded in 2011, to celebrate both contemporary aesthetic and classic opera. This brand new reimagining of the first truly English opera by Henry Purcell takes the drama of the 16th century stage and places it firmly into the heart of a conflict that defined the century that would follow it. With a baroque ensemble and condensed cast, the production thrives on site-specific commissions, including Fishbourne Roman Palace and Portsmouth’s HMS Warrior. A not-to-be-missed interpretation, the performance will also be followed by a post-show talk with the creative team and the company.

The winner of the concerto prize, awarded for the first time this year and which took place at the University earlier in the semester, judged by Jonathan Plowright, Head of Keyboard and Crispin Ward, Head of Orchestral Studies, will be performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, conducted by Cristian Brancusi.
