AT THE CU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
thank you Thank you for your ongoing support for the University of Colorado School of Medicine. As one of the country’s premier academic medical centers, we continually demonstrate our commitment to all those who need the best medical care. Philanthropy accelerates progress in all areas of our mission including conducting leading research, educating future leaders and providing outstanding patient care. The past several years have been filled with significant achievements, particularly in our efforts to provide clinical care to underserved and economically disadvantaged patients. With you by our side, we are able to transform medicine and care for our entire community.
Your philanthropy provides critical resources for us to achieve our goals and make our communities healthier. Your support fuels essential programs and gives our faculty the resources they need to dream bigger and execute on their vision. As we retain and recruit top talent, philanthropy is a key driver of their success. I am grateful for your valuable contributions to these efforts.
- John J. Reilly, Jr., MD Dean, CU School of Medicine Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Richard D. Krugman Endowed Chair
FUELED BY PHILANTHROPY We are focused on improving lives by providing the best care possible today, while making strides in basic research to inform the therapies of tomorrow. Our unique position as an academic medical campus also allows us to train the future medical workforce. Philanthropy enhances our educational programs. The Rural Track at the School of Medicine is training future physicians with an interest in practicing in underserved rural communities. Students have the opportunity to participate in a four-week summer preceptorship in rural primary care. This gives them the hands-on training and experience to successfully launch their careers. With your support, we are also continuing the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series. These lectures bring scholars from around the country to the CU Anschutz Medical Campus to share information and collaborate with our faculty. This is an integral part of sharing findings and knowledge with professionals in the field. We are also committed to retaining and recruiting top talent to push the field of medicine forward. By supporting our faculty, you are ensuring they have the resources to continue their innovative research and transform the medicine of tomorrow.

YOU’VE MADE THIS POSSIBLE Philanthropy allows us to invest in innovative research, and support our outstanding faculty and students. By focusing resources in these areas, we can take discoveries from the labs to the clinics more quickly than ever before, and support the best and brightest students. Over the past two years, we have witnessed remarkable successes that include:
• Ensured the long-term stability of the Colorado Rural Health Scholars Program: This program encourages students to pursue medical careers in rural communities. Students in the program divide their time between instruction, group project work, laboratories, hospital volunteer positions and time with mentors.
• Recruited top talent to CU Anschutz: Philanthropic support was vital to the successful recruitment of several leaders to the School of Medicine faculty. National searches for leaders create new possibilities in education, research and clinical care.
• Expanded knowledge through the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series: This lecture series is a premier program on campus, which brings world-renowned medical experts to share knowledge and collaborate with our faculty. During the past year, we hosted eight lectures on campus.
LESLIE J. BERG, PHD Dr. Berg was recruited to CU in February 2019 to lead the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. Her current research centers on immune modulation and t-cell lymphocytes. This area of research has expanded significantly and is now being use in patients to successfully treat various types of cancer. Our vision is to create therapies that enable us to turn the immune system up to fight certain diseases and turn the immune system down to treat others.
“I’m excited to have recently joined the CU Anschutz Medical Campus because of the infrastructure available for basic science. I look forward to creating connections throughout campus to collaborate and accomplish great things with fellow scientists.” -L eslie J. Berg, PhD Chair, Department of Immunology and Microbiology
C. NEILL EPPERSON, MD Dr. Epperson was recruited to CU to lead the Department of Psychiatry and expand clinical operations for mental health throughout Colorado. Under her leadership, the department has focused in on the developmental origins of disease — in utero and throughout the lifespan — to understand psychopathology. In close partnership with Nanette Santoro, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Judy Regensteiner, PhD, director and co-founder of the Center for Women’s Health Research, Dr. Epperson is spearheading efforts to lead nationally in women’s health.
“Attending to our patients’ mental health needs in a timely manner is critical to their overall health and well-being. Our comprehensive approach to mental health and substance abuse treatment has the potential to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of Coloradans.” -C . Neill Epperson, MD Chair, Department of Psychiatry
