A warm welcome to the University of Cumbria. A University of Cumbria qualification is your passport to an exciting future. It is awarded by a strong and ambitious university, with an enviable reputation for producing people with the skills, ability and experience to fit straight into the workplace and enhance our wider society. Launched just under nine years ago, we are founded on the experience and tradition of well over 150 years of higher education and are hugely proud of our heritage and the progress this new institution has made. Now home to more than 10,000 students, we are largely based in and around the Lake District, with Carlisle to the north and Lancaster to the south. This is such a special environment, offering a remarkable place in which to live and study. Our reputation is strong, with many national awards to our name but I am most proud of what our students say about us and the strong student satisfaction ratings for our courses and the university overall. Our employment ratings speak for themselves, as one of the highest in the sector. Our tutors are academics but also experienced in the world of work. Our mission is to ensure you have an incredible learning and social experience and that you leave us fully skilled and career-ready, and able to fulfil your ambitions. With best wishes
Professor Peter Strike Vice Chancellor

If you have the ability for degree study but don’t have the necessary grades for an honours degree programme or are returning to study later in life, the four-year foundation entry-level course provides all the support you require from day one.
A new addition to the wide range of opportunities we already offer, foundation entry is an alternative route to accessing Higher Education and all the experiences you’d expect as a full-time student.
10 / www.cumbria.ac.uk
You should possess the equivalent of GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above. Specific course entry requirements are outlined on each course information page on our website. Flexibility around entry requirements is often available as long as you can show enthusiasm and aptitude in your preferred subject area. Upon graduation, a greater proportion of foundation entry students achieve a first or 2:1 degree classification than those doing the traditional three-year degree and go on to enjoy successful careers, which just goes to prove – it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish!

If you have the passion and the potential, we make it possible for you to become a firstclass teacher.
For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/ routesintoteaching
12 / www.cumbria.ac.uk
If you have the passion and the potential, we make it possible for you to become a first-class teacher. We have many routes for you to choose from and many of our courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The BA (Hons) with QTS is the main undergraduate route into primary teaching. This route involves practical time in school as well as studying at university. These courses can be completed in three or four years. If you’re sure you want to be a primary or early years teacher, this route is perfect for you.
If you are not 100% sure about which age range you want to teach, then we would recommend you take a non-QTS degree, allowing you more time to decide and then go on to study a PGCE after graduating. A PGCE is an intensive, one-year course which equips you with the techniques and experience you need to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
You spend at least 24 weeks in school, and with Masters-level study included, you will leave university prepared to hit the ground running in your new career. We have a wide range of non-QTS degree courses which are suitable as a grounding before studying a PGCE. These include our Working with Children and Families course and also our Education Studies course. All of our education courses and further information can be found on page 91 onwards.

You will learn the key skills needed for a career in the aquatic sciences including fieldwork and laboratory techniques through practical handson experiential learning at our wonderful campus in the heart of the Lake District National Park.
BSc (Hons) Zoology Zoology is the branch of biology suited to those who have a desire to learn more about animals, their evolution and adaptation, their place and role within ecosystems and their influence on scientific discovery in fields such as conservation, biotechnology, environmental management, animal welfare and education. The course will be taught through a mix of lectures, practicals and fieldwork in the UK and abroad to ensure you gain a broad range of skills to prepare you for a career in zoology or a related scientific field.

Graduating from the University of Cumbria marked an important milestone for Natalie Atkinson – whose journey from prison to university formed the basis of a hard-hitting BBC documentary. It was a journey that saw her win the prestigious NUS Student of The Year award. Natalie was taken into care at the age of 13. Previously an A-grade student, she dropped out of school and began hanging around on the streets of Lancaster–frequently getting into fights. In the course of a few years she amassed more than 100 convictions, many for battery and criminal damage. After numerous stints in secure units, aged 18 Natalie found herself in prison mixing with hardened criminals. Depression led Natalie to self-harm and addiction. She emerged from prison with GCSEs in Maths and English, and the standard £46.50 prison discharge grant and was sent on her way.

“I feel really proud of UCSU, the university and myself —without the university I would not have been given the opportunity to study.”
After leaving prison Natalie received support to plan for her future. She attended various college taster courses and completed an Access to Higher Education Diploma. Along the way she met University of Cumbria lecturer Nigel Rourke, and decided to apply to the University of Cumbria following his recommendation. She said: “Initially I was concerned that my criminal record would prevent me from being accepted into university. I was quickly reassured and after attending a couple of meetings and gaining appropriate references, I was offered a place.
In September 2012 Natalie was contacted by a BBC team working on a documentary on young adults in the criminal justice system. But the power of Natalie’s story persuaded the producers to make her the main focus of Banged Up and Left to Fail?, which was broadcast on BBC3 in spring 2014. In 2014 Natalie also went on to win the annual NUS Student of The Year award. She went on to tell the University of Cumbria Students’ Union (UCSU) after the event “I was absolutely speechless when my name was called out! I feel really proud of UCSU, the University and myself– without the University I would not have been given the opportunity to study.” Natalie has now secured a place at the London School of Economics to study for an MSc in Criminal Justice Policy and has been offered a job as a substance misuse worker. She hopes to progress to a PhD. She said: “I never thought I would return to education and now I am about to graduate with a degree and go on to study a postgraduate course. Without the support and encouragement of the staff at the University of Cumbria I would not be in this position.”
“My biggest fear was that I would not fit in to the university but my concerns were soon put behind me. From day one I have felt supported and empowered to achieve my potential.”

4 LOCATION
UCBS is based in the vibrant and welcoming city of Lancaster. Most of our courses are offered at Lancaster, but there’s also the chance to study at our campuses in Carlisle and Ambleside in the heart of the Lake District as well as at Energus – on Cumbria’s Energy Coast. Lancaster also has great transport links for those who want to pursue business interests in cities such as Manchester or Glasgow.
5 SMALL CLASS SIZES
Why be a face in a crowd? Our small class sizes mean you’ll develop a close working relationship with your tutors that will help you get the most out of your course. Don’t take our word for it – here’s a quote from one of our students: “The small class sizes allow you to engage and ask questions about the topic. It allows academic debate and this helps you understand things more clearly.”
6 RESEARCH
UCBS is home to CRED – the Centre for Regional Economic Development. CRED is dedicated to analysis of contemporary issues affecting local and regional economies in the north of England, within a European and global context. UCBS also incorporates our Institute For Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS), a ground-breaking global hub of inquiry and research on sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and the creation of fairer societies.

7 CARLISLE BUSINESS
INTERACTION CENTRE
UCBS has recently opened Carlisle Business Interaction Centre (CBIC), an innovative hub offering teaching facilities, meeting rooms, hot desk facilities and business incubation space. CBIC offers students the chance to rub shoulders with some of the region’s most creative and forwardthinking entrepreneurs. It’s great place to learn, share ideas, get advice and make contacts.
8 AMBLESIDE RURAL
GROWTH HUB
Following the success of CBIC we’ve opened a Rural Growth Hub at our newly-redeveloped Ambleside campus. It offers similar benefits to CBIC in the heart of the Lake District National Park.
9 EVENTS
Guest speakers, workshops by industry experts, seminars, lectures and networking events help bring our courses to life for our students. We organise a wide variety of events designed to add an extra dimension to our courses.
10 INNOVATION
We recently became the first public university in the world to accept Bitcoin as payment for tuition. IFLAS took this step because we believe in innovating and in learning by doing – experiential learning is at the core of our philosophy.

Affordable university study When you study at the University of Cumbria you are investing in your future. The costs of your degree study are affordable. Here’s how.
You don’t have to pay tuition fees upfront so you study now and pay later. This means repayments are based on what you earn, not what you owe.
This means that a student from a typical background, living away from home while they study, would receive over £5,000 in maintenance loan and grant. And that’s in addition to the tuition fee loan. The maximum loan and grant payable is over £7,000 and the minimum is nearly £4,000 —what you are entitled to depends on your household income.
You only start repaying once you start your career. Even then the terms are modest. You will pay around about £30 per month if your starting salary is £25,000 and it comes straight out of your salary automatically so no messy payment arrangement to make.
To cover your living costs including accommodation while you study with us, you apply for a maintenance loan. Many students are also eligible for a maintenance grant which is not repayable.
If your salary starts at less than £21,000, you don’t make any repayments. Repayments only start when your salary exceeds £21,000.
And that’s not all. We have a range of discretionary bursaries and scholarships to further offset the costs. To find out more, contact enquirycentre@cumbria.ac.uk or call 0845 6061144.
Arrangements are different for some health degrees. Please see the NHS bursary information on the opposite page.

WAKE UP!
My day begins with the snoozing of my alarm at least three times.
After tidying up, having a big breakfast is the most important meal, to get my day going.
54 / www.cumbria.ac.uk
Usually, my first lecture is at 9am and it includes theory and practical learning. There are about 15 people on my course and we divide into pairs during the practical session. We like to practise the practical skills on each other, which I find really helpful for my learning as well as building up the bond between me and my coursemates.
LUNCH After lectures, I like to have my lunch with friends at the cafĂŠ at university and sit and chat together.
AFTER LUNCH I am also a Student ambassador / volunteer so that fills plenty of my spare time. Sometimes I go into town shopping or for a walk around the park.
EVENING In the evening I like to work out in the gym, followed by my revision and also talk to my family. I also fit in preparing my evening meal, before I go out to socialise with my friends and course mates.

Jason Hettrick Business Management with HRM
“After my first year at a different university I was not overly happy with my university experience. I had a chance meeting with a senior lecturer at the University of Cumbria who was extremely positive about its business school and four weeks later I transferred to the university.
“The course fits in with my career background and also where I want to be in the future. It has been both interesting and challenging. If I had to pick out one thing that really stands out it would be the academic staff. The lecturers are approachable, friendly and are always there to help.”
We asked Jason if he could give an example of where a member of staff has gone the extra mile to assist him, “It would be too difficult to pick out one occasion. By their very nature the academics in the business school seem to do this on a daily basis for myself and other students. For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/business

“I took on a summer internship that was offered to me between my 2nd and 3rd years and the experience I gained was invaluable. I have also taken part in various volunteering projects offered by the university.
And what will he miss most? “The close-knit, friendly and family feel to the campuses, but I was really fortunate to have a job lined up before the end of my degree. I really believe that UoC have helped with this – the teaching and development that is embedded into the courses here put you in a great position to succeed once your course has finished.”

Max Evans-Kirkman BA (Hons) Film and TV Production
Max is English-born, part German, but grew up in Saudi Arabia and then France before attending college and finally university in England. When asked why he chose the University of Cumbria he says, “I think what drew me to this university was the practical nature of the course when compared to many other film and media production courses in the UK, which are often more theory-based. Its relatively small cohort size was another factor, meaning a potentially more social group and more opportunities for tutor feedback and advice.” Of his course he comments, “What I think I enjoyed most was the range of different roles or jobs you could try. On such a course it’s strongly recommended that you try every role, and if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have discovered I enjoyed camera work so much.”

“Perhaps one of the most exciting times was when I was offered work experience with a professional crew, while a friend and I were shooting a short piece in Carlisle. I must have made a good impression, as I’ve worked with said crew since, got paid, and met Warwick Davis! I feel very lucky to have some great contacts before I’d even finished my course – all from a little volunteering covering local events for the uni’s web-TV channel.” Max says, “Not only do I have the tools and experience to have a chance at getting into the industry, I’m already there.”

Dominic Boulding BA (Hons) Wildlife Media
“I chose the University of Cumbria because it was one of the few places which really did wildlife and media. I also looked at the prospectus and saw that there was such a diverse range of modules and the freedom to be able to pursue my own interests.”
Going on an expedition to Scotland with three very good friends has been Dom’s favourite experience at university so far: ”One of the best weeks of my life–so much to see in so little time.”
The people on the course have all been hugely fun and influential in my work. If any of them are reading this, thanks guys!”
Dom also went on to describe how being given the chance to go to The Gambia with conservation students was such a draw. “It was truly one of the best experiences that I could have done!”
Finally, we asked Dom what he is most proud of. “I am most proud of being able to work on my own and having won my very first competition category outside of the university.” Dom won the top prize in the ‘Wildscapes’ category of the RSPB Scotland photo competition.
“I was already very independent before I arrived, but having spent three years here, I have really shown myself that I can do things on my own. My confidence has grown and so has my professional life.
And in five years’ time…? “I hope to be taking people around the world taking pictures or doing something with wildlife. I really don’t mind–as long as I can take pictures of animals I am happy.”

Rabeha Malik BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS
Rabeha knew from a young age she wanted to become a primary teacher and, after volunteering at a private day nursery and at a local primary school and helping out at an afterschool cookery club, she had plenty of experience under her belt. She chose to study with us because we offered the course she wanted, the locality and great transport links, and because we specialised in teaching/education as well as having a multicultural population. We asked Rabeha what she like most about the course: “Thirty people in my cohort–it’s a nice number. The seminars and also the opportunity to talk, discuss and share ideas were great.” She went on to describe her favourite experience at university so far: “An alternative twoweek placement – me and my friends chose to go Nepal. Amazing trip! Stayed at a girls’ orphanage and taught 4–16 year olds in a rural school.
“We brought the school their first ever whiteboard (they had limited resources), desks, chairs and a blackboard, and we raised enough money for every single class in the school to have a whiteboard. We also brought resources from the UK, gave them to the orphanage children and school kids.” “Helping those that that are less fortunate taught me to appreciate things that I take for granted. By the end of this year I will be proud of completing my degree (it’s been a long, hard three years), securing an NQT job and passing my QTS skills test.” Rabeha has now graduated and is working as a newly qualified teacher in a Redbridge school.

Harry Wakefield BSc (Hons) Forest and Woodland Management with placement
Reputation was one of the reasons Harry, from Norfolk, chose the University of Cumbria: because “it is the National School of Forestry and well known in the forestry sector.” He says “I love working outside and wanted a job that has great job specifications and lifestyle. Also a job to change and make a difference to England’s landscapes. I’m now working for a great company doing forest and woodland management as a consultant.”
“I enjoyed the placement year most, and the variation of modules, especially urban forestry and tropical forestry. My favourite experience was meeting and talking to people in the same profession and getting knowledge and inspiration off them.” For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/forestry
Harry adds, “University made me more mature, opened doors to get jobs and taught me the basic knowledge of forestry management.” Does he think he would be where he is today without his degree? “No,” he says, “The placement year taught me 70% of what I know now and opened many doors for me with the help of the forestry lecturers.” When asked what he is most proud of, Harry says, “Getting a first, securing a great job, winning the EGGER prize for best management plan and ICF student of the year.”

He chose the University of Cumbria because it is the “perfect location for outdoor activity, brilliant staff and newly-built facilities to further my future prospects.” Jack found the course to have a “very practical setting, giving the mix of both academia and physical activities” and was pleased with the small campus, which he says offers “a very family-orientated environment which gives a very close community between the students.” When asked what exciting opportunities have been offered while studying with us, Jack says “During both my years at

university I have worked at a summer camp in the USA, being valuable to my placement, and experience for future career, and from work experience in year two at a local college where I wrote a research paper on experiential learning in public services, I gained invaluable experience for my future teaching.” So has university changed his life? Jack comments, “I have become more independent during my stay, and whilst here I have taken a focused approach both to my studies and to enrichment activities such as captain for the Ambleside Rugby Union side, and being the Outdoor Education Course Representative. Doing these roles has made me a more mature adult.”

Nichola Cranston BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult)
It was caring for people that convinced Nicola Cranston she should pursue a new career direction. She loved working as a care worker and the job satisfaction that came from looking after residents in a care home. However, she often felt her role was limited and she was capable of much more. That’s when she decided to train as nurse. It was a big decision for Nicola as she relocated from Northern Ireland to begin her BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing degree at the University of Cumbria, which meant leaving her family and friends behind. “I found it exciting going to university. As a care leaver, I had to move away from my foster home to live independently, which I had always wanted to do.
“Before I gained my GCSEs, I never thought it would be possible to get into university. And when I did gain my qualifications and got a place on the nursing degree, I felt a great sense of achievement as I was the first person in my immediate and extended family to get into university. I felt that, by gaining a place, I had started to get my life on the right track for the first time. I also felt I could be a role model for my two younger sisters,” said Nicola.
“My personal tutor and other university staff have been very helpful and as a care leaver, I feel I have received excellent support right from the beginning of my course”

Eloise Eddington BSc (Hons) Learning Disability Nursing
It was always Eloise’s plan to study for a degree, and when she found this course it made her mind up. “It was close to home which was important for me, it was one of the few universities that do the learning disability branch of nursing, and it meant that I would get experience from placements in Cumbria, which is where I hope to work in the future. “My little brother has Downs Syndrome so this was always my main driver. I had seen professionals work with him and I knew I wanted to do something similar. And I am so glad I did! “I absolutely love placement and I am always excited to get back out there. I have been lucky in that I’ve had some amazing placements that have given me fantastic opportunities. All have been exciting opportunities; the best will be my elective placement in June/ July when I go to Australia to work with people with learning disabilities. I am very excited about that.
“I like the mix of uni and placement. Practical experience is just fantastic and you cannot learn better than when you are doing it, but I love the Lancaster campus as a base for my theory learning. It’s not too big and not too small. It is a really friendly and accessible campus. “In the future, I hope to be part of a children’s learning disability nursing team, hopefully in my area!”

Michael Parkinson BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
Michael, from Chorley, was working for the NHS in adult mental community health before starting university. Luckily, in his role as an Occupational Therapy (OT) assistant he was offered a secondment to complete his OT training. He studied part-time at university while working part-time. Michael chose to study at the University of Cumbria due to its great reputation. He says, “I had worked alongside OTs who had completed their degree at the University of Cumbria and had a very pleasurable experience. The reputation of both the quality of teaching and the support from tutors was enough to persuade me to apply!” He adds, “I love the fact that Occupational Therapy can be practised in so many settings. I was fortunate enough to have placements in memory assessment, acute inpatient mental health, stroke rehabilitation and community mental health, to name a few.
“The variety of clients, environments, physical and mental illnesses I experienced throughout my four years as a student was what I enjoyed most about the course.” He admits that university has changed his life:
“The past four years studying at university has taught me that determination will get you through. Uni can be challenging at times and it has its pressures. I was determined to finish the course, as difficult as I found it at times. Four years on and I’m about to reap the rewards in my future career as an Occupational Therapist!”

Laith Hasan BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography
Originally from Iraq, Laith came to the UK with his family in June 2007. Unable to speak any English his biggest mission was to learn the language from scratch before starting his education journey. “Due to the limited English knowledge I had, I couldn’t work when I first came to the UK. However, I managed to get a part-time job whilst at the same time studying different courses to help improve my English and strengthen my future university application.
“I always wanted to go to university and study for a degree because I love studying and I always set high goals for myself, which I believe I can reach with the dedication I have.” We asked Laith why he chose to study with us. He said “Because it is one of the best universities in UK, which has a very good reputation nationwide for the high standards of teaching across all university programmes, in particular, health degrees.
“I have had a few favourite experiences at the university including being a student ambassador, which has been one of the best highlights and one that I will always remember, as it helped strengthen my communication and presentation skills, organisational as well as team working skills. Also, being nominated for Representative of the Year award and getting invited to the Success Award night has been pleasing.” Finally we asked Laith what he saw himself doing in five years’ time … “I can see myself doing a Master’s degree in image interpretation whilst working in the hospital as a professional radiographer.”

Barry Lees Graduate BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing
Barry, from Preston, chose the University of Cumbria because of “the ideal degree course to feed my writing passion and the proximity of the campus to my home. It also nurtured a long-held and healthy obsession with reading and writing stories.” Currently a lecturer in Policing here at the university, he is also a writer of detective fiction. “I have two novels available on Kindle and another due for 2015,” he says. So what did he like most about his course? “Exchanging ideas in creative writing workshop sessions and laughing a lot,” he admits, adding “Graduating with a 2:1 was a brilliant day and I felt a great sense of achievement.”
For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/english
When asked if attending university had changed his life he comments,
“I became a school teacher, then a lecturer, and I gained great satisfaction from both. I would not have been able to do either if I had not undergone my university studies. My writing skills were raised from those of an enthusiastic amateur to a standard fit for publication.” Barry is currently studying for an MA in Academic Practice here at the university, and has more novel plans in hand. “I want to increase my readership and see my novels translated into other languages.” he says. Asked about his proudest achievements Barry says, “Having sufficient faith in myself to become a mature student and the online reviews I have received for my novels.”

Dr Elizabeth Bates BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology Lecturer
Originally from Halifax in West Yorkshire, Elizabeth spent most of her academic life in Preston. Before coming to work at the University of Cumbria she completed her BSc and MSc, and started her PhD at UCLan. When asked what she enjoys about working at the University of Cumbria Elizabeth says, “Lots of things! I love the students and the staff. I love that because it’s a bit smaller and we have smaller cohorts I know my students and they know me. This means that if they ever need help or someone to talk to they can always come and knock on my door. She adds, “This creates a really nice and friendly atmosphere within my team and the students in all three year groups. We help and support students through their degree who might not have the chance to flourish elsewhere. It makes us all feel really proud on graduation day!” Has anything newsworthy happened during her career? “I recently presented one of my PhD studies at
a conference in Glasgow which was picked up in the media,” she says. “They reported my findings in The Times, the Daily Mail and the Telegraph, I did six radio interviews and was on Border ITV news.” Asked what she is most proud of, she admits “I feel proud of quite a few things. I’ve always worked really hard to get where I am today. One of my proudest moments was collecting my UCSU Lecturer of the Year award. To know that the students recognised and appreciated my hard work was such a huge reward. Ultimately, though, my proudest moments occur every year at Graduation, when I see the students don their cap and gown and celebrating their success together. Some have to overcome huge hurdles to achieve this and to see them celebrating with their families on such a special day is lovely.”

James (Jim) Bewick LLB Law (Hons)
Hailing from Gateshead, Jim had previously worked in accountancy and as a primary school teacher before starting his long cherished ambition to gain a law degree. Jim retired from teaching in 2008, and says “I did not enjoy retirement, but it took me four more years to pluck up courage to apply for a place, and only then through being present at a graduation ceremony in Carlisle Cathedral. Witnessing the looks on the faces of those students as they received degrees: my, were they almost bursting with pride and emotion! I submitted an application, heard no more and thought that was my opportunity over. I booked a holiday and, shortly before I was due to go, I received a telephone call offering me a place. The rest is all history.”
He goes on to say, “There is no one aspect of the course I have not enjoyed. The inspiring lectures, the seminars, the observations to changes in attitudes of the students as they mature and respond to the challenges of the course.” When asked what he sees himself doing in five years’ time, Jim reflects:
“That is a difficult question, but I should like to think I would be back here studying. A Master’s? A Phd? Who knows? This course has taught me that, with effort, anything is possible.”

Vicky McMahon BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work
“I was encouraged to apply for university by two women who were my youth workers when I was a young person; they were a big influence on me and made me want to pursue a career in youth work. There is also another reason, which may seem a bit silly, but I also decided to study for a degree so that I could get a place on my grandmother’s graduation wall.
“The youth workers that I worked with as a young person and as a trainee youth worker had all gained their Youth and Community Work degree from this university and had spoken very highly about the course and its lecturers.” Your favourite experience at university so far? “When I was given the opportunity to become a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Support) Leader where I can use what I have learnt to help the new group of first years with uni life, assignments, and the different modules; and I get to do it with my best friend Lauren, who makes it even better.
“I have met some amazing people not just in my year of the course but also in the year below and cannot forget the lecturers; I have been able to experience things that I would not normally have access to, such as going on placement in different agencies, and I have also learnt so much that will help me in my current job as a youth worker–and I still have the opportunity to learn so much more.”

They are all lovely, lovely people.” Sarah feels that university has changed her life. “I feel more confident in myself than I have ever been,” she says. “Through school I felt very withdrawn from people and occasionally suffered anxiety issues, but since growing used to university life I feel happier in my own skin than I’ve ever been. much easier to talk to new people and I really think I owe it to this university.” When asked where she sees herself in five years’ time Sarah says,
“I’d love to be in a production on stage back in Newcastle. There’s no shortage of theatres back home and it’d be a dream come true to act on one of those stages.” Does she have a top tip for would-be students? “Don’t confuse homesickness for a dislike for university life. Jack Frimston BA (Joint Hons) Drama and Musical Theatre
Jack admits to having been a bit unsure when looking to apply to university; however, “After my audition I fell in love with the place and never looked back.”
“I wanted a course where I could focus on drama and musical theatre. The course gave you the opportunity to really tailor it to what you wanted to do, especially in third year, for example. if you wanted to take preference on directing, acting, singing, it gave you the opportunity to do this. With university it really is what you make of it–the more you put in, the more you get.” Since leaving university, Jack has been busy. “Me and three friends travelled around Europe for five weeks busking. While there we had some brilliant musical opportunities and even got to perform with Charlie Chaplin’s grandson in the Swiss alps.
“I have been in London for a year now, working in sales, but in the evenings and on weekends I busk and perform at different venues around London. I won the Mayor of London’s Big Busking competition and gained a lot of support and interest from this. I’m also currently performing as Aladdin in pantomime at the moment.” Jack says, “When I came to university I didn’t really have any direction in life, and went because it was the next step. I always had ambition and dreams, but university started to shape these dreams and gave me the chance to turn them into a reality.”

Ashley Tiffen BSc (Hons) Policing, Investigation and Criminology Lecturer
Born in Cockermouth, Ashley started on his travels when he won a scholarship to study in the United States in 1973-4. On his return he joined Cumbria Police, balancing his work as a police officer with studying with the Open University, gaining an honours degree with the focus on politics and economics. On retirement in 2005 he worked briefly as a civilian police complaints investigator before rejoining the police and extending his travels, this time to the sleepy backwater of the Cayman Islands where murder, gun crime, drugs and financial crime belied the image of golden beaches and warm Caribbean waters! Ashley finally retired from the police and returned to Cumbria to teach. Ashley enjoys teaching at the university and says, “The enjoyment comes from working with students, both formally in lectures and seminars, but also in seeing them develop through their time at the university.”

He adds, “We are fortunate that, at the University of Cumbria, our students aren’t just numbers but real people with names. They have their strengths to be built upon and their weaknesses to be addressed and when we work together effectively, going that extra mile to support them, it becomes a pleasure.” When asked what he is most proud of, Ashley says, “Every July I get to see our graduates receive their degree at Carlisle Cathedral. It might be the first time I get to meet their family and friends and to see all those smiles of pride and triumph. How can you not be proud of what you do to help them achieve their goal?”

With a strong academic base, you will be able to access careers in the statutory criminal justice agencies such as the police, probation and prison service, as well as careers in the voluntary and private sectors.

Rhiannon Preece BSc (Hons) Policing, Investigation and Criminology
Rhiannon, from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, was encouraged by her family and tutors to further her studies and broaden her employability skills. “I was originally taking a gap year but, after attending an open day and having the opportunity to speak to the staff about my course, I changed my application to start immediately. Due to coming from a very remote area I found the university was the perfect size for me to feel comfortable whilst living away from home,” she says. Rhiannon believes the best part of her course “is the tutors encouraging us to challenge them both, in lectures and personal tuition time. There is no right or wrong opinion and this helps develop my debating skills, as well as having the confidence to voice my opinion.” She has enjoyed many aspects of university life, but her personal favourite is the Women’s Football Team.

“We set the team up in my first year and it is great to see us in a league; the girls are all great to get along with and spend a lot of social time together,” she says. “Coming to university has helped me gain the confidence I never thought I would have. I have always been independent but always worried about what my peers thought of me– now I find myself more carefree and confident to not stress about others.” She adds, “I am proud of the skills I have developed, allowing me the opportunity to continue onto a Master’s degree. In a few years’ time I hope to be a fully qualified probation officer with both a degree and Master’s degree to my name.”

Jack Ball BSc (Hons) Conservation Biology
A lifelong fascination with nature and wildlife led Jack, from Bolton, to decide to study Conservation Biology with us. He says: “I had been lucky enough to travel when I was younger and this sparked my interest in the natural world. So now I want to both see the world and try to make it better.” Based at the Ambleside campus, he adds: “The location is perfect for nature lovers: studying at Ambleside, in the heart of the Lake District, means that I am never far from a new hike or nature walk.” Asked what has been his favourite experience at university so far Jack says:
“During second year the course takes you to The Gambia for field study; this is a unique and incredibly useful way to see conservation in action in a world completely different from ours.” For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/conservation

Other exciting opportunities offered while studying have included a yearlong placement in Iceland, doing research on whales and dolphins. Jack says, “As a result of my time there I have extensive experience in numerous industries, and I have the contacts to back that up. Without the university I would never have been able to complete what was the most important and tremendous year of my life.” When asked what he would like to be doing in five years’ time, Jack comments: “The dream would be to have become a full-time researcher in the Arctic collecting data in an effort to stem the effects of climate change. Dream big!”

Entry requirements We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We consider your personal statement, reference and any relevant experiences as well as your academic background and performance.
The UCAS points quoted for each course are explained in the UCAS tariff table on the opposite page or at www.ucas.com Please note that there may be additional, specific entry requirements for your individual course. You must check the relevant course page on our website for full details: www.cumbria.ac.uk/courses For professional courses such as teaching or healthcare you’ll be required to attend for an interview. Similarly, applicants for art and performance-based courses are invited to provide a portfolio of work or to prepare for an interview/audition/workshop as appropriate. Some courses allow you to submit an ePortfolio. BA/BSc/LLB (Hons) General entry requirements are that you need to be able to demonstrate evidence of ability in written English (for some courses this is by achieving grade C at GCSE) and one or more of the level 3 qualifications set out in the UCAS points tables on the opposite page.
198 / www.cumbria.ac.uk
The qualification entry requirements listed below are some of the most common, but this list is not exhaustive. Please contact the Course Enquiry Centre if you are unsure. A levels (A2) A minimum of two or three A levels depending on the course criteria. All A-level subjects are acceptable, including General Studies. AS levels (Advanced Subsidiary) Offers will be framed in terms of your overall achievement at the end of Year 13. For most courses, additional AS subjects or three-unit Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) may be allowed to count towards your total tariff points. BTEC A minimum of Diploma/Extended Diploma is required, depending on the course criteria. NVQ Level 3 If you offer NVQ Level 3, your application will be considered and you may be asked to complete supplementary work. Irish Leaving Certificate A minimum of four Higher/Honours grade passes is required. International Baccalaureate and European Baccalaureate A minimum score of 24 points is necessary in the International Baccalaureate and a minimum score of 60 per cent in the European Baccalaureate. Higher entry levels may be set for some courses. Access to HE Diploma A pass in a relevant Access to HE Diploma course is acceptable, though level 3 grades in specific subjects may be stipulated for some courses. Cambridge Pre-U Diploma We will accept this in combination with another level 3 qualification.

Progression/Advanced Diploma We will accept all lines of learning of the Progression/Advanced Diploma for entry, depending on course-specific criteria. Entry to second/third year by Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) We will consider applicants who have successfully completed an HNC/HND, foundation degree or equivalent relevant course with a minimum of 120 level 4 credits and 120 level 5 credits at another higher education institution. You will be asked to provide evidence of your previous study to determine suitability for admission. Applicants with extensive, relevant experience may also apply; please see our website for further details: www.cumbria.ac.uk/howtoapply. Foundation degree/Diploma in HE You are normally expected to have at least four GCSE passes at grade C or equivalent and to have one pass at A2 or equivalent. We will accept relevant NVQ level 3 qualifications. Check the course pages on our website for further information. Integrated foundation year Foundation entry is the perfect way in to studying for a degree which will set you up for life. A new addition to the wide range of opportunities we already offer, foundation entry is an alternative route to accessing Higher Education and all the experiences you’d expect as a full-time student. Applications are made online through UCAS in Autumn and Winter in the year before your course starts - courses start in September. However, you can apply outside these times with details on our course pages Year 0 Some of our undergraduate art and design courses offer a Year 0 option, which is a four-year full-time course.
200 / www.cumbria.ac.uk
This first year (year 0) develops and extends your study skills in preparation for the next three years of degree-level study. See coursespecific criteria on our website for further information. Pre-entry experience Many of our professional courses expect you to have tested your motivation and commitment by having some experience in your intended career through paid or voluntary work, or by at least having visited a relevant department and spoken to professionals. You need to check the individual subject entry on our website and to reflect your motivation and commitment in your personal statement. Health/DBS clearances In addition to academic entry requirements, if you are accepted onto any course involving a placement (for example, teaching and health/social care) you will need a satisfactory occupational health clearance and/or Disclosure and Barring Service background clearance prior to registration. There is normally a charge for completing the DBS disclosure procedure. You will also be subject to any other national professional requirement introduced prior to your admission. Applicants whose first language is not English Applying for undergraduate courses requires a minimum level of IELTS 6.0–7.0 or equivalent unless otherwise specified. For details on English language qualifications we accept, please email intadmissions@cumbria.ac.uk Please see course details for specific score required. Please note—you must be able to provide, prior to registration, evidence of all the qualifications you list on your application form. All certificates must be supplied no later than 31 August prior to starting your course in September.
Making your application Full-time courses Apply online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), between September 2015 and January 2016; they will send your application on to us. Applications submitted after this date will be considered late and the course you have applied for might be full by this time; however, we will consider you for alternative suitable courses. Their website (www.ucas.com) provides all the information you need about universities, courses, locations, entry requirements and financial support. You are allowed to select up to five course choices; the UCAS application fee is £12.00 for a single choice and £23.00 for two to five choices. (Fees correct at time of print.) You need to use the correct UCAS campus and course codes as not all courses are offered at every campus. You will be asked for the following information when you apply online: • institution code name: UoC • institution code: C99 • campus location: A Ambleside B Brampton Road, Carlisle E University of Cumbria at Energus, Workington F Fusehill Street, Carlisle L Lancaster T University of Cumbria in London Y University of Cumbria at Furness College, Barrow-in-Furness
Part-time courses Applications should be made online directly to the university—visit our website or contact enquirycentre@cumbria. ac.uk for details and guidance. There is no official closing date but we would encourage you to apply as early as possible, as many courses are competitive. What makes a good application? We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We look at your academic background and performance, relevant experience (particularly for professional courses where some voluntary or paid experience is required) and your reference. Above all, we look for motivation, commitment and potential—evidence that you can benefit from study at higher education level. Make sure you include • Relevant qualifications/evidence of ability: check our website for the specific entry requirements required for each course. Tell us your previous academic results and your projected grades. • A supportive reference, from an employer or your school or college. • A good personal statement. Explain clearly what attracts you to the course and tell us about your wider interests and experience. If you are applying for a course that incorporates professional training and placements, you should include any relevant experience or visits you have made in the workplace. Highlight your individual strengths and qualities, personal skills, capacity for teamwork, contribution to the community and your enterprise, originality and determination. Select some activities which bring out these qualities.

What next? When we receive your application, we will send you an acknowledgement and if you are successful at this stage you will get either—an offer (with an invitation to visit the campus to which you have applied), or—an invitation to interview on a particular date. If we are not able to offer you a place on your chosen course we will usually try to offer you a place on a similar course and will contact you to discuss this. Alternatively, if we think you are suitable, but cannot offer you a place on your preferred campus because of the level of competition, we will offer you a place at another campus if one is available. And if I accept? The admissions team will contact you and send further information from February onwards about accommodation, and from May/June onwards about preparing to join the university. If you have any other queries, please telephone the admissions offices for information and advice on 0845 6061144. Deferred entry We welcome applications for deferred entry on some courses. If you have specific plans during your year out, indicate these on your personal statement as they may be relevant to your course and could enhance your application. International students Applications for full-time undergraduate study are made through UCAS. Please see the international pages of our website for full details of our entry requirements (including English-language skills) as well as contacts for advice and support.

From 2009 the UK Border Agency introduced a Points-Based Immigration System (PBS) for students coming to the UK from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Students entering higher education will need to obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) plus finance confirmation to obtain a Tier 4 student visa. UK education providers are licensed by the UK Border Agency. When students apply for their visa (or entry clearance) they will need a valid Certificate of Acceptance of Studies from the university. Please note that a CAS is not a guarantee that a visa will be issued. See the following websites for further details: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ studyingintheuk www.ukcisa.org.uk Equality and diversity We are committed to creating a positive environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and is supported in the development of their careers and studies. We aim to create a culture that supports equality, diversity and inclusion. We are all part of the university and contribute towards the culture through our actions and words. We aim to address any barriers to inequality in our systems, policies and decision making, as well as in our behaviour and ways of working. Equality, diversity and inclusion encompass the key institutional aim of widening participation.
