BUSINESS, LAW, POLICING AND SOCIAL SCIENCES These courses have been developed to help you find a career in an area that really makes a difference to people’s lives. If you are interested in the contemporary issues affecting society in the form of business, law, crime and deviance, we have a course for you! You could become a force to be reckoned with, with one of our professional policing programmes, developed in line with the College of Policing and our local partnership with Cumbria Constabulary. You will have the opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills through either placement options or by undertaking a policing-based research project. Our law courses introduce you to legal practice as well as broader social, political and ethical issues. You will be encouraged to develop a range of academic knowledge and skills such as problem-solving, analysis and advocacy, and develop values and attitudes, personal and social responsibility and the ability to think independently and reflect critically. The courses include the opportunity for internal Moots and external placements. Our Forensic Science courses are designed in close collaboration with industry and have significant input from industry practitioners, to ensure content is relevant and up-to-date. As well as practical crime investigation work, you’ll spend plenty of time in the lab learning the chemistry and biology you’ll need for tasks like fire investigation and DNA analysis. We work closely with the Forensic Science Society and in partnership with numerous organisations in the region, including local constabularies and Cumberland Infirmary, to help our students gain real-world experience. Courses include our unique major incident simulation, which allows students to get a taste of what it’s like working as a real crime scene investigator. Criminology can open up many doors to a variety of professions including the police, probation, offender management, the prison service and the full range of crime reduction and community safety agencies, with new and growing opportunities in the security industry. They also offer the practical analytical skills that feed directly into the beginnings of a career in social and market research with a wealth of employment opportunities in public, private and third sector organisations. The Business School offers a wide range of flexible and accredited courses, programmes and routes to suit all needs. We are actively engaged with the local community and take a practical response to learning to ensure you leave as a ‘work-ready’ graduate.

Course content has been developed in collaboration with the Association of Project Management and partners from industry. With a strong emphasis on building up practical skills, students will gain a solid grounding in advocacy and public speaking alongside sound legal knowledge and case management. With excellent opportunities to develop strong links with the legal profession in Cumbria from the start of the programme, you will be trained in client interviewing, teambased negotiation, mediation and ethical practice. BSc (Hons) APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY BSc (Hons) APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY with integrated foundation year YOUR COURSE The applied nature of this degree programme means that you can focus on how psychology is used in the real world, to inform policy and practice, and more generally work to enhance people’s experiences. Applied psychology includes all the core areas in psychology: developmental, social, biological, cognitive, research methodologies and individual differences.
