SPORT The University of Cumbria is a great place to kick-start your career in sport. We provide a wide range of coaching, sport and exercise degrees in Lancaster and Carlisle with plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience. Our lecturers are passionate about sport and eager to share their expertise with you. With our relatively small class sizes, you can study sport in a friendly, supportive community where you’re treated as a person rather than another face in the crowd. Getting access to tutors and equipment is a breeze, giving you every opportunity to quickly progress in your studies. All of our students in Lancaster and Carlisle have access to University of Cumbria sports facilities, which are run by Register of Exercise Professionals accredited staff, and house all the equipment you need to keep in shape while you study. Both sites have an air-conditioned fitness suite and a large, multi-purpose sports hall. Students at Lancaster have the added bonus of a specialist gymnastics area and an AstroTurf pitch. The Physiotherapy and Sport Laboratory is dedicated to the investigation of human performance from a clinical point of view. It’s based in Carlisle and is used for the teaching of both Physiotherapy and Sports and Exercise Therapy. The Human Performance Laboratory is dedicated to the study of exercise, physiology and biomechanics. It’s based in Lancaster and is used for teaching core modules through the first and second year of the Sport and Exercise Science degree, along with optional modules in the final year. We have strong links with partner organisations such as schools, local authorities and the NHS, allowing us to provide a wide range of opportunities to enhance your professional profile with skills learned in real-world situations. With an emphasis on work-based learning by placements, volunteering and community projects and the opportunity to gain national coaching awards, our sport package is second to none!

If you’re keen to develop your talent or interest in physical education, engaging in a practical degree that supports entry into a variety of teaching and coaching careers, this course could be for you. Building on the opportunity to explore physical literacy, sport development, physical activity and health development, you will put your knowledge and skills to the test in a multidisciplinary and work-based learning environment. As well as developing your academic knowledge and skills, this course incorporates valuable placement opportunities and experiences throughout, along with a residential outdoor educational module in the nearby Lake District. The key sport and exercise science disciplines of physiology, biomechanics and psychology are at the heart of this degree, addressing both the areas of sport performance and physical activity and allowing continued specialisation as the programme develops. Our facilities include a £2.5 million sports complex and a large, fully equipped physiology and biomechanics laboratory. BSc (Hons) SPORT REHABILITATION BSc (Hons) SPORT REHABILITATION with integrated foundation year YOUR COURSE As a sport rehabilitator, you can play an integral part in helping athletes get back on their feet after an injury or show people how to enhance their performance levels safely. This degree focuses on guiding people to return to or maintain safe involvement in sport and exercise. Built around a blend of theoretical understanding and the development of practical and vocational competencies, the programme is accredited by the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT). A range of highly-qualified practitioners, including sport rehabilitators, physiotherapists, psychologists and sports scientists will equip you with the range of therapeutic and practical skills required for effective and professional sports rehabilitation. This can give rise to employment in the NHS, GP referral programmes, the Ministry of Defence, professional sport clubs, teams and individual performers, private sports injury clinics or in consultancy.

Physiotherapists work with a broad range of people, helping them to maximise their potential through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. They also require in-depth knowledge and understanding of the core areas of practice, and are informed by current research evidence. The ability to examine, diagnose, problem-solve, prescribe and undertake physiotherapy treatments is central to the role.
