Michael Ogunjinmi Youth work’s loss is social work’s gain Youth and community worker, Michael Ogunjinmi who hails from London, worked for a charity that was based in the Lake District. His work in the Lakes was with young people who benefited from residential and outdoor experiential learning activities in the great outdoors. Michael originally qualified with a BA (Hons) Community and Youth Work from Goldsmiths, University of London. Seven successful years in the sector came to an end when his organisation had to reduce its activities after cuts in its funding arrangements. It was this that prompted Michael to look at social work. “I have always wanted to work with a wide variety of people in a social work setting and applied many years ago to study it but my lack of experience at that time meant I could not secure a place. I was qualified to obtain my place at Goldsmith’s so my career took me down that route” said Michael. “I like the fact that I have been able to meet other professionals on my course which has exposed me to the wide variety of life and work experiences of my fellow students. My placements have been really good and I have been able to work alongside seasoned and well grounded professional social workers—this has been great experience.“
The MA Social Work was developed in partnership with a range of key stakeholders, including social work service users and carers, and representatives from social work agencies. It’s an intensive programme of study that combines a level 7 academic award with a qualification in Social Work. It is studied over two years full time. The course of study includes 200 days of assessed practice placement and, as such, the timescale is very condensed.
" I have been able to work alongside seasoned and well grounded professional social workers— this has been great experience." “I have enjoyed the academic rigour. I think the level of teaching is much more intense than at undergraduate level and the workload is also more demanding but that’s what I want as I want to get the most out of the course. The gym and reading help me keep a good university— life balance!”

John Roberts Masters enhances school improvement Studying at masters level enabled a Cumbrian headteacher to focus on how he could improve his school and the quality of the education his pupils receive. That was the intention of John Roberts, Headteacher of Bewcastle C of E school in rural north Cumbria but the end results extended well beyond the boundaries of the local school. John wanted to focus on children’s writing. He was especially fascinated about how they write and think, how they talk to each other and how they collaborate when they write. “I wanted to carry out action research that could be applied to the real world in our school. This programme allowed me to do that. I have used the findings of my research dissertation to develop creating writing and this has resulted in real improvements in the standard and quality of our childrens’ writing skills. The MA has been a catalyst for change in my school.” said John. John went on to publish a booklet based on his research that other schools have used to improve creative writing in their own schools. The booklet, “All Write Now. How a small rural school took giant strides to improve creative writing” is a practical
" I have used the findings of my research dissertation to develop creating writing and this has resulted in real improvements in the standard and quality of our childrens’ writing skills." guide that Johns says teachers can dip in and out of. John’s MA was a fully online programme supported by optional Saturday face to face workshops that can be arranged at locations throughout the UK. Dr Chris Loynes Transformational potential of the outdoors Dr Chris Loynes is the programme leader for MA Development Training and MA Transcultural European Outdoor Studies and is a doctoral supervisor at the University of Cumbria. Chris was brought up in the West Country and went to university in Sheffield where he studied Geology. At school he was inspired by fieldwork enjoying learning how to read the landscape and understand the processes at work in it. His first job was as a geology and geography teacher running the school’s field work programme and developing an alternative curriculum course in outdoor education for marginalised students. “I found I loved teaching outdoors and watching young people grow through their experiences. My career has taken sideways steps, first into outdoor youth work and then into writing about and training others in outdoor education. This eventually led me to studying and teaching in universities. I am still half time so that I can keep up my educational advisory work and leading people in the outdoors on sea kayak and sailing journeys. I value the link between developing and improving professional practice and the understanding that
comes from academic work” said Dr Loynes. “I have been teaching at Ambleside at the University of Cumbria in its various legacy institutions for over twenty years. It is in the ideal place to learn about outdoor studies surrounded by lakes, rivers, crags, hills and forests and a wide range of organisations providing outdoor adventure and environmental experiences for recreation and education. I like the small scale of the campus and the commitment of all the students and staff to the subject. It also gives me every opportunity to be in the outdoors both personally and professionally. Perhaps the best part of being a lecturer is meeting graduates again later in their career and hearing what they have achieved.”
" I found I loved teaching outdoors and watching young people grow through their experiences." “I have come late to research. I have always had an interest in the transformative potential of outdoor experiences since my early work with marginalised students. My interest in landscape and its interpretation has developed into a study that is

13
exploring what outdoor experiential education can contribute to education for sustainability. I am also involved in large scale evaluations of the impact of outdoor education on young people in schools and in youth work. This involves me in working with local and national charities and many schools.” “I have been fortunate to be the editor of the field’s professional journal which gave me many opportunities to teach and study aboard. Currently, I am working with two other universities, in Norway and Germany, providing a new MA. The students are from all over the world and study a semester at each
university. This collaboration is leading to many interesting projects involving teaching, research and writing.” “I’m looking forward to the new ideas that will emerge from the redevelopment of the Ambleside campus and the potential collaboration with colleagues from forestry, conservation and business. Working in higher education has given me the chance to be constantly creative in developing new work and being part of an international academic community that is seeking to understand how to do this work well.”

Dr Sally Elton-Chalcraft Making research work in the real world Dr Sally Elton-Chalcraft, Reader in Education at the University of Cumbria is a passionate believer in applying research findings to the real world. A major part of her role is to share her research findings with students who then go on to use the insights in the classroom to help them as teachers and benefit their pupils. Dr Elton-Chalcraft teaches on our MA Education and has particular expertise in teaching and learning, creative and effective curriculum, multicultural education, research methods and school leadership. “Throughout my career I have continued to value the role of academic study to enhance my teaching of undergraduate and post graduate teacher education students and ultimately improving childrens’ experiences and life chances at school. I have recently been appointed as Reader in Education which offers me the opportunity to enhance my own and others’ research capacity.“ Dr Elton-Chalcraft’s belief in the power of research was sparked by undergraduate study at Sheffield University, postgraduate and masters study at Westminster College, Oxford and Oxford Brookes University
" I enjoy working alongside students, sharing in their enthusiasm for their projects and supporting them to produce a well thought through thesis which will have a positive impact in their chosen area." respectively and most recently completing a PhD at the University of Derby. Summing up her philosophy, Dr Elton-Chalcraft said “I believe teaching needs to be a research based profession and academic study enhances classroom practice. Morgyn Sneddon Reputation is everything for Morgyn The PgD Medical Imaging (Ultrasound) programme is aimed at those involved in diagnostic ultrasound imaging. It allows students to evaluate, research, analyse and synthesise data, and to research a specialised area. It is accredited by the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE). This was the course that graduate, Morgyn Sneddon was looking for. The international reputation of the University of Cumbria was also a strong appeal as well as the fact that the course enables students to become clinically competent in ultrasound specialisms—Vascular, General Medicine, Musculoskeletal, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. “I chose to study MSc Medical Ultrasound, after completing a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Imaging Science at Glasgow Caledonian University said Morgan. “My post as a trainee sonographer within NHS Fife required me to study at a postgraduate level and I chose the University of Cumbria due to its great reputation for training health professionals.”
Morgyn’s role at NHS Fife is focused on training in obstetric, gynaecological and general ultrasound. The course is ideal for busy professionals as it is delivered through distance learning. “I really like the flexibility of my course. It has been great to meet so many new people and face the new challenges that the course brings” said Morgyn.

CARLISLE Historic Carlisle is a good place to live and study. We have two campuses, one at Fusehill Street and one at Brampton Road. You have the best of both worlds— great city life with green and pleasant countryside outside the city boundary. The Lake District is also only half an hour away and you can get to the coast in the same time. The city is just ten miles south of the border with Scotland and has fast links to the rest of the country via the M6 and West Coast Main Line railway. It’s easy to get to Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The spacious heart of the city is particularly attractive with cathedral, castle and an excellent array of shops and places to eat and drink.

Professor Robert Williams Collaboration inspires Robert’s artistic vision Robert Williams is an artist and academic who leads our MA Contemporary Fine Art. He trained initially at Lancaster University and Leeds University where he was the Henry Moore Scholar in Sculpture Studies. He has been leader of the programme since 1998 when the degree was offered by Cumbria Institute of the Arts which was one of the educational institutions that went on to form the University of Cumbria in 2007. Robert believes passionately in collaboration with other artists. In particular he has worked collaboratively with his great friend and colleague the American Artist Mark Dion, on such projects as The Tate Thames Dig (1999), Armarium: Theatrum Mundi (2001), Phylogenetic Trees (2003) and An Ordinall of Alchemy (2009). This relationship has also led to some fantastic work with colleagues in the USA and Europe including Bryan McGovern Wilson, Jason Simon, Dr. David Barrowclough, Dana Sherwood, Dr. Petra Lange-Berndt, Cabinet Magazine and the Mildred’s Lane Project in Pennsylvania.

“sharing interests in art with students—the discursive relationship for all the staff and students really does help to challenge, to drive ideas and to move one’s own practice on— it is such an exciting prospect to spend your working life talking about art with other enthusiastic practitioners” said robert. the collaborative spirit extends within his family. robert completed a long project with his son, Jack. thesaurus scienta lancastriae—which explored the historical williamson park in lancaster, and made collections of biological, historical, anthropological and cultural material, all of which was housed in a mobile field centre, and exhibited in the ashton memorial, a huge folly built by lord ashton in the park. the project was based on methods of Victorian scientists in honour of the bicentenary of sir richard owen—the lancaster born originator of the term dinosaur. this resulted in a book and several exhibitions. robert passionately believes that the ethos, character and outlook of studying at the university of cumbria is a unique experience for students and staff alike. “it is all about joining a community of researchers and practitioners. it is about joining in with the discourse according to an interdisciplinary approach, and a pluralistic outlook for making and talking about art. this gives rise to an enormous diversity of work made—and a huge range of research territories. the technical resources too

are astonishing, and build upon the legacy of the past both in terms of the equipment and workshops—but also because we have a fabulous group of professional technicians who are themselves artists and makers. and then there is the community—a small, close-knit group of staff, students and researchers, constantly discussing their subject, testing ideas and theory, and coming together to share the results of their activity. it is the model of what an art school should be.” For more information on professor williams and his collaborations, please visit www.aylwardwilliams.com

your questions answered What are taught degrees?
Are there distance learning options?
Taught degrees as their name suggests involve a mix of formal lectures, tutorials and individual research to produce a dissertation in an area of specialism of your choice. Assessment is by examination and coursework.
Please see our course listing on pages 32-58 where those courses offered by distance learning are shown.
What are research degrees? Research degrees involve undertaking an in depth research project usually on a single topic. There are usually taught elements focusing on research methods. See the feature on research degrees on page 60.
How long do they take? Taught programmes are usually one year full-time, two years part-time. Research degrees can take four years full-time and five to seven years part-time.
What are the costs involved? Our postgraduate programmes are very good value for money. Please see www.cumbria.ac.uk/finance for the full details.
How do I find out more? Attend an open evening where all your questions will be answered. See page 15 for details

rese arch degrees What is a research degree? There are two research degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Both these higher degrees are awarded on the basis of a thesis, which embodies the results of the student’s research, the MPhil thesis containing evidence of originality in scholarship and the PhD thesis being a longer work containing an original contribution to knowledge. Research degree study has to be an original investigation with the aim of increasing knowledge and understanding of the selected topic. The Higher Education Funding Council for England state that research also includes “work of direct relevance to the needs of commerce and industry, as well as to the public and voluntary sectors; scholarship; the invention and generation of ideas, images, performances and artefacts, including design, where these lead to new or substantially improved insights; and the use of existing knowledge in experimental development to produce new or substantially improved materials, devices, products and processes, including design and construction.
a p p ly o n l i n e l w w w. c u m b r i a . a c . u k / p o s t g r a d u at e
How does a research degree differ from a taught degree? A research degree is very different because the research student works independently on their research. There are generally no formal lectures to attend or modules to complete but students are supported by a team of supervisors who have direct knowledge of the subject area. The degree is awarded following an examination of the completed thesis by two independent examiners which includes a viva voce examination with the candidate.
61
How big is the University of Cumbria research community? We have over 70 research degree students from the UK and other EU countries and overseas. How does learning take place on a research degree? We operate a system of team supervision for research students. Each student is allocated a main supervisor, who provides the majority of support and regular contact. The main supervisor is normally an experienced researcher holding a PhD, or a senior academic with substantial knowledge of research methods. The supervisory team will normally contain at least one, but usually two, other members whose research areas are relevant to the student’s thesis. Research students meet with their supervisory team periodically to discuss progress to date. As well as structuring expectations of progress,
this system allows students to draw on the specialist knowledge of a range of tutors. The main supervisor oversees research and generic skills acquisition and development following national frameworks and informed by current national agendas such as employability. Tutors who can supervise proposed research topics within PhD and MPhil research degrees will be found within the broad areas listed in our fields of study.
FOR MORE INFORMATION Please visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/ graduateschool
It is important to note that a PhD achieved by independent research is very different from a Masters course in that a student will be required, as is usual in the sector, to work largely to their own timetable with restricted input from the main supervisor or supervisory team. As a general indication, contact time with main supervisors equates to 1 hour every two weeks for a full-time student and 1 hour every four weeks for a parttime student.

The types of research degree we offer At first, research students are registered as a probationary PhD candidate whose registration is subject to confirmation after an in-depth review when the work is well underway. Alternatively you can register for an MPhil, with the option of transferring to PhD, subject to individual wish and after a rigorous review. How much time will I need to commit? For a full-time PhD you should aim to spend at least 25 hours a week on your studies and 14 hours a week as a part-time student. The normal time to completion for full-time is around 4 years and for part-time, according to individual circumstances, from 5 to 7 years. What are the start dates? 1 October, 1 January and 1 April annually. Funding support Three fully funded PhD studentships are offered each year (subject to confirmation) and these include tuition fees, a tax-free stipendiary, and up to £500 fieldwork expenses. There are currently no studentships specifically for overseas applicants. From time-to-time there are some opportunities for teaching. Details of the award Upon successful completion of your thesis and examination you will receive a Lancaster University PhD or an MPhil. Gareth Bolton Focus on student support key for Gareth Gareth Bolton is a diagnostic radiographer by profession, specialising in ultrasound practice. He leads the MSc Medical Imaging (Ultrasound) at the University of Cumbria and maintains his professional skills by working with patients one day a week at a local NHS Trust. Gareth qualified as a diagnostic radiographer from Kingston University and St George’s Hospital Medical School in London in 1999. He began his professional career at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. During this time he gained a variety of skills and experience and developed an interest in ultrasound imaging, later qualifying as a sonographer in 2002 (gaining a postgraduate diploma in ultrasound from St. Martin’s College in Lancaster). He has a keen interest in mentoring students, having played a considerable part in the clinical education and assessment of several postgraduate ultrasound students in his clinical department. Gareth further developed his interest in student education working for the University of Salford as a part time lecturer, in addition to his clinical role, assisting with the running of their ultrasound programme.
" I particularly enjoy teaching students in clinical practice and helping them with their own career plans." Earlier, he moved to London following A-Levels to study diagnostic radiography. “This gave me a good grounding and a wealth of experience working in very busy teaching hospitals. I had a fantastic time living down there, but missed the slightly more laid back life of Lancaster and the South Lakes” said Gareth. “I find the University of Cumbria a friendly and pleasant place to work. My colleagues are extremely supportive and students really appreciate the help and support they get from the academic staff. I particularly enjoy teaching students in clinical practice and helping them with their own career plans.” Gareth continues to maintain his skills in ultrasound, with regular scan sessions at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. He is experienced in obstetric, gynaecological, general abdominal, small parts and vascular ultrasound. a p p ly o n l i n e l w w w. c u m b r i a . a c . u k / p o s t g r a d u at e
