In my role as a Union and Community Sabbatical Officer, I regularly travel to all of the various university sites and campuses, talking to students about their education, their experiences and any queries or concerns they may have. Also, as part of our regular UCSU 2U projects, all UCSU staff and officers visit each campus in turn to promote current campaigns and projects, as well as reminding people of the full range of services offered by UCSU, and taking feedback from students about all sorts of things. Each campus has its own challenges, but every single one offers both unique and exciting opportunities which will shape the next chapter of your education. We’re confident that in this prospectus you will find what you are looking for, and we look forward to meeting you next year. “ The University of Cumbria has a great reputation with a lot of links to local and national businesses, which are especially relevant to events. I knew that studying here would help me to make valuable industry contacts as well as learning from experienced people currently working in the events industry. My favourite part of university so far has been the workexperience opportunities. The course really encourages it, as learning about events can’t just be based in the classroom. It’s been great to apply the theory we learn to an actual event or eventindustry role. I’ve had a mixture of intern and paid work experiences both through the university’s many job placement schemes and through my own research. How different my CV looks now to when I started two years ago. I thought that there was a possibility of finding similar job roles after I graduated. I didn’t think for a second I’d have the opportunity to work on the amazing projects I’ve already been involved in while I’ve studied!” Helen Statham BA (Hons) Top-Up Performance, Festivals and Events

Volunteering Contributing in your own way to a community or voluntary project can be deeply satisfying. Your publicspiritedness will also stand out on a CV, alerting potential employers to your commitment and personal qualities. The Students’ Union have a dedicated volunteering team to help you find the right placement. For more details visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/studentlife or speak to a university careers adviser, who will be happy to help.

Working for us Working as a Student Ambassador for the university enables you to work with other like-minded students. It comes with a good rate of pay and provides valuable employment experience that will look good on your CV. We recruit ambassadors every year—the role is varied and includes working on open days where you could be conducting campus tours for prospective students, or answering queries and giving a real student insight into life at university. Kendal Calling

Our students got priceless hands-on experience at one of the UK’s top music festivals, Kendal Calling in 2013. On the back of the University of Cumbria’s sponsorship of the festival, over 25 students got real-world work experience directly relevant to their degree.

42 / www.cumbria.ac.uk

2013 was a vintage year for the festival with headliners including Public Enemy, Primal Scream and Basement Jaxx all on stage in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside. Our student team and their lecturers were given exclusive rights to film the Woodland Stage. They captured some amazing acoustic performances —take a look here www.cumbria.ac.uk/ kendalcalling Students also got involved in a brand new feature of the 2013 festival—Kendal Calling Academy. The academy, which was devised by the festival and the University of Cumbria, consisted of a series of master classes, talks, Q&As and open surgery-style sessions with a variety of music industry professionals and luminaries in the fields of music, art, creative writing and photography. They included Snapshot! a photography masterclass with NME top photographer Dean Chalkley, Getting a

Record Out and Tellin’ Stories with Charlatans legendary frontman, Tim Burgess and Liz Atkers from BBC6 Music and the Music Masters with top producers and mixers, Jim Spencer and David Tolan. With students drawn from a range of courses including adventure and media, film and TV, journalism and creative writing, there were unlimited creative opportunities that inspired a wealth of writing, filming, blogging, tweeting and posting throughout the weekend. Kendal Calling is just one way University of Cumbria students get real-world experience as part of their degree to enhance their employability. Placements, Study Abroad, volunteering, employability degree modules and our careers services are all part of the package to make our students career-ready when they graduate.

Affordable university study When you study at the University of Cumbria you are investing in your future. The costs of your degree study are affordable. Here’s how.

You don’t have to pay tuition fees upfront so you study now and pay later. This means repayments are based on what you earn, not what you owe.

This means that a student from a typical background, living away from home whilst they study, would receive over £5,000 in maintenance loan and grant. And that’s in addition to the tuition fee loan. The maximum loan and grant payable is over £7,000 and the minimum is nearly £4,000 —what you are entitled to depends on your household income.

You only start repaying once you start your career. Even then the terms are modest. You will pay around about £30 per month if your starting salary is £25,000 and it comes straight out of your salary automatically so no messy payment arrangement to make.

To cover your living costs including accommodation while you study with us, you apply for a maintenance loan. Many students are also eligible for a maintenance grant which is not repayable.

If your salary starts at less than £21,000, you don’t make any repayments. Repayments only start when your salary exceeds £21,000.

And that’s not all. We have a range of discretionary bursaries and scholarships to further offset the costs. To find out more contact enquirycentre@cumbria.ac.uk or call 0845 6061144.

Arrangements are different for some health degrees. Please see the NHS bursary information on the opposite page.

Nicky Metcalfe-Meer Lecturer Human Resource Management

Nicky hasn’t always worked in education —her business background is varied to say the least! From travel agent to insurance manager, Nicky decided to take up teaching for the personal and professional benefits you gain. As she says, “I’m really proud that I am making a very small but positive impact upon every student I teach. You can’t buy that kind of personal satisfaction.” After studying organisational behaviour at undergraduate level, Nicky completed her MSc in International Human Resource Development. Undertaking her first teaching job was probably her most challenging to date as it was at Lancaster Castle Prison which she says was “interesting!” From there, she took up posts at local further education colleges before coming to the University of Cumbria. She has also been a guest lecturer at other universities.

For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/courses

She enjoys working at the university and puts it down to many factors. She explains: “It’s mainly the people (staff and students) although the view and surrounding areas help too! I need to be at a student-centred university as my passion is for teaching.”

“The University of Cumbria offers a student-centred excellent teaching and learning experience. We will get to know each other and you will not be lost in a crowd. We care and add value to all students who come to us.” She has now been teaching at the University of Cumbria for eight years and she admits: “Every year at graduation I still cry.”

Judith Kinsella Media Graduate

Travelling to Norway to make a film about the Northern Lights was a highlight of her time at the University of Cumbria for Judith Kinsella from Northern Ireland. Judith liked the flexibility of the course that meant she did not have to specialise immediately. “I applied for the year 0 course because I knew I wanted to work in media; however, I wasn’t sure what I’d be best at. After Year 0, I chose Media Production as this was the best option for me.” Judith’s dream has come true and she is now a Post-Production Coordinator at The Look, a small boutique company which specialises in picture finish (Colour grading, VFX and online editing).

“When I started university I thought I was going to be Steven Spielberg, making epic movies! By the end of my degree I decided that this wasn’t the case, although I knew that I’d always want to work in a small independent company. I owe all of my success so far to the University of Cumbria. I did an MA at another university, and a lot of people say to me ‘Oh doing your MA must have really helped you’. I always answer ‘Yeah it helped, although my experience at Cumbria really helped build me up for the media world.”

“I get to make art every day, and that’s the most important thing as it puts a smile on my face and makes me happy! Art is my passion,” said BA (Hons) Fine Art student Bex Gibbons. “The studios are fantastic! The studios are ace, they are big, roomy and just an artist’s dream. Also, getting the chance to experiment with facilities such as screen printing and photography has been great as they are my favourite media to work with at the moment.” The range of visits has made a great impression on Bex too. “Last term, it was a trip to Amsterdam and the year before was Berlin, where we went to art galleries and saw amazing exhibitions. During welcome week, a trip to Glasgow included GoMA. This was a brilliant trip that enabled me to make friends through art right at the beginning of my course. I have also won a university Creative Travel Award and will be using the prize to visit a number of UK galleries that I want to see.”

James Bradley BA (Hons) Graphic Design

James Bradley, BA (Hons) Graphic Design has quickly established his credentials, being awarded membership of the International Society of Typographic Designers for his Unsung Hero project. James’s imagination for studying graphic design at degree level was fired by a lecturer’s talk at a University of Cumbria open day. The set-up and staff really impressed him.

“Our studio is a fantastic place, a large open space, with all the different years in one area. The best part of our course is the tutors, with their range of personalities and humour that brings the most out of everyone who is willing to learn and listen.”

Work experience has been one of the highlights of the course. James said: “In my second year I got in contact with a design and marketing company in Shrewsbury. I spent a month working in a team of designers on live tasks, which pushed me forward as a designer but also gave me contacts within the industry. I am about to carry out my second work-experience placement at an award-winning design studio in Newcastle. Plus I have been handling a range of freelance clients from these experiences which will hopefully set me up for leaving university.”

Gillian Gilbert BA (Hons) Photography

2013 was a good year for BA (Hons) Photography student Gillian Gilbert, who won the Redeye Printing Bursary, with the judges commending her accomplished study of an estate worker and bee-keeper named Walter, as both a strong personal and symbolic project. Gillian took the decision to change careers as she wanted to develop her creative and photography skills and to gain a university degree. She made a very informed choice as she was working as a careers officer at the time.

“I had been offered a place at the Welsh School of Glass to do a BA (Hons) Stained Glass but it was the opportunity to study locally, doing something I enjoy—as well as the excellent reputation and facilities— that appealed to me the most.”

80 / Courses / Creative Arts

The course is structured so that students are able to develop their own artistic character, as Gillian testifies: “The support from lecturers and technicians has allowed me to develop my practice to the level I have achieved. I haven’t been forced to follow a particular route, but encouraged to develop my own practice and ideas.” Gillian has enjoyed the academic challenges of university. “In year two we were asked to create an exhibition for our work that was not on white walls and was outside the university. This was an immense challenge which I really took on board and pushed myself, and the team I was with, to create something very exceptional. I have also got a lot from visiting experts from the industry which I have found invaluable.”

Andrew Dent BA (Hons) Wildlife and Media

Andrew’s passion for the natural world was nurtured by his family and the world he observed from home on the Northumberland coast. “I have always been a family person, so location of the university was a major reason why I chose the University of Cumbria. Another was to do with location. Cumbria has some beautiful locations for wildlife: the Solway, the west coast and of course the Lake District,” said Andrew. The university experience has been an excellent one for Andrew. “The media side of the course is brilliant; you are surrounded by knowledge from lecturers, who are always there to help and provide guidance. The animal-based side of the course is also great, studying modules like ecology and biodiversity.

The opportunities you are given in regards to planning and bringing your plans to life on your own wildlife expeditions have to be the highlight of the course.”

“My favourite experience so far was my expedition to the Isle of Mull in Scotland. I spent two weeks of pure bliss with wildlife, filming everything from golden eagles, white tailed eagles, hen harriers to mountain hare, sperm whale and short eared owls. I will definitely remember that for the rest of my life.”

Nicola Yermack BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS

After leaving school at 16 and working as a PA, Nicola married and started a family. Educating six children at home inspired Nicola to set up local community homework and study clubs. As a result, it was no surprise when Nicola made the choice to train as a teacher. She says: “Though I felt a bit reluctant to return to study after 22 years, I was also inspired by the challenge.” When choosing a university, Nicola liked what she experienced on a University of Cumbria in London open day. “The lecturers were all helpful and I liked the feel of the place. I received a good vibe from the people and the campus.”

For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/education

“I have many memorable experiences of university including the placements in schools, the opportunity to visit the university’s Lake District campus in Ambleside, and teaching in the Netherlands.” Nicola is incredibly proud of the achievement of not just herself but her whole cohort. “We did it. We graduated. We made it through the years, through our ups and downs. My whole year group is graduating together. That’s what I’m most proud of.” Nicola was awarded the University of Cumbria Students’ Union Student of the Year award 2012/13. Nicola now works as a teacher at a junior school in Dagenham.

Frank Tiramani BSc (Hons) Forestry graduate

Two years of working and travelling convinced Frank Tiramani that forest management was the life for him. Frank, who hails from south-east England, chose the University of Cumbria to help him land his dream role. Frank chose our BSc (Hons) Forestry and Woodland Management because of the mix of rigorous academic study and practical placements that allowed theory to be put into practice. “The location was just right, with access to a wide range of woodland habitats close to campus, and I liked the helpful attitude of the lecturers I spoke to when I visited the university,” said Frank.

“My highlights of the course have been the friendliness of the lecturers, the quality of the field trips, the sandwich year and summer work placements. I was particularly pleased with the contacts I was provided with that allowed me to arrange a summer work placement in British Columbia, Canada.” Frank’s hard work paid off after graduation and he has realised his dream by returning to British Columbia to work in woodland management. Looking ahead, setting up his own consultancy or management business —either in Canada’s western most province or back in the UK—is Frank’s next objective.

Harry Constantine BSc (Hons) Outdoor Leadership

Born and brought up in the Yorkshire Dales, Harry Constantine was in the right area to pursue his love of the great outdoors. Part-time outdoor retail work, a gap year working for an outdoor adventure company and volunteering as an instructor in his spare time at his local outdoor centre convinced him it was the life for him. Harry liked what he found out about our BSc (Hons) Outdoor Leadership degree. “Out of all the outdoor courses, I decided that the leadership course was the most rounded. I took the BSc route, which adds a different feel to the course and the specific modules for the BSc option were of great interest, having come from doing A levels in sciences and PE.”

“The practical days are great!” says Harry. “The lecturers are always happy to help where they can and

there’s a great camaraderie between all those on all the outdoor courses, which makes lectures and other tasks a lot of fun!” “The practical sessions are a mixture of one-day trips and expeditions in the activity of your choosing and they are really great! The main thing I have gained from these is enhanced skills to use in my sport. In the second year one of the modules was all about the acquisition of skill and we had to take what we learnt from the coaches on the expedition and apply it to our own learning, writing up what we did. These theory-into-practice sessions really help and added another level of depth to the course!” said Harry. The future is bright for Harry, who sees a number of career routes ahead. “Either bike guiding, teaching or managing of an outdoor retail shop appeal.”

“I loved the community atmosphere at the University of Cumbria. I didn’t want to go to a big city and a university where I would just feel like a number.” Since joining, Conor is really enjoying his course: “I feel that I really benefit from smaller class sizes and being treated like an individual. Classroom discussions are lively and interactive. I feel I benefit from hearing other students’ opinions on topics and the fact that you are not assessed purely on assignments and exams is also great. “I really enjoy the vocational aspects of the course. I have just finished my first placement and it was a great success. I loved every minute of it.”

Conor’s placement involved working with those with alcohol and drug addiction in Cumbria. He says this was challenging at times. “This was a fantastic placement. I really enjoyed learning more about addiction and working alongside the service users.” Conor has also found the support he has received from the university to be excellent: “Members of staff at the university are extremely helpful and will go the extra mile to make sure you are happy with the course.” Conor is looking forward to his future career in social work after graduation. He explains: “University has completely changed my life. I am enthusiastic about social work and the role that it plays within society. After getting my degree, my next aim is to work with children and families.”

Chandni Asher Graduate BA (Hons) English

When asked to define what she enjoyed most about her course, Chandni found many positive features to list! “There are many aspects of the course that I considered enjoyable and admirable. Firstly, and most importantly, are the tutors. They are the most supporting, flexible and understanding people you will ever meet. The commitment they pour into your education is astounding and they ensure they are catering to you as a student as well as setting high but very attainable standards for everyone. “Next is the actual content of the course: it is diverse, unexpected and one that is carefully thought out from all the members involved in the running of the course. You will never be bored.

“Finally, it’s the satisfaction you get from the course. After every session, you feel like you’ve learnt something, achieved a level of understanding that you didn’t think you could. And for that, I would love to take the course all over again.” Since graduation, Chandni has been offered a position on Network Rail’s MSc Project Management Programme, which she will undertake before joining the company. When Steven set out to study journalism he was unsure of which direction he would eventually take. However, during his time at the university his choice became clearer.

“During my course my interest grew within the media industry and upon finishing university I have worked on many freelance projects within the local media in Cumbria and also a large project for a jobs website. Steven has nothing but praise for his course and the opportunities that arose whilst at university and continues: “I liked the fact that it was a very practical course. Of course there were regular lectures on theory but the opportunities to test my skills made it a great time for me. “During university we got to work with BBC Radio 1—both pre and post Big Weekend and the opportunities seemed to be endless. My favourite experience though would have to be the first Informer (student publication) that was published under my reign as editor. The majority of the content from me and my fellow course mates and the firstyear students was really top drawer.”

Niall Allen Graduate BA (Hons) Religious Studies

Since graduating, Niall has continued his education. Following an MA in social work, he is about to take up his first role as a social worker in New Zealand, where he will be working among members of the Maori community. His future aspirations are to take this role further and he explains: “My longterm aim is to set up the first Emmaus homeless shelter in New Zealand. It would specialise in helping service users who have a substance addiction, to empower them to create a communitysupport network and become selfreliant, not needing state benefits. Furthermore, I want to eventually study a PhD in indigenous cultural responses to homelessness and drug addiction.” Studying wasn’t always easy for Niall. Yet, despite a tumultuous school life and his teachers advising him not to continue his studies, Niall

persisted. He credits the University of Cumbria for changing his life.

“The University of Cumbria gave me the confidence, and helped me to achieve educationally and personally beyond any aspirations I (or anyone else) had. University changed my perspective on life and stopped me becoming stuck in an office job I would never have enjoyed. The University of Cumbria helped empower me to realise my potential. “The BA (Hons) Religious Studies team want, and actively encourage, students to reflect upon themselves and develop a clear and concise picture of who they are as a person at their core.”

I felt fully supported by each lecturer during my degree and this definitely helped me achieve the best grades possible.” Explaining the opportunities that she’s been given while studying, Dora goes on to say: “I was able to present at the University of Cumbria’s Applied Psychology Annual Conference. This really helped me improve my skills.

What a great opportunity for students! I was also chairperson of the Psychology Society in my second year. This was a great role to have. It was loads of fun and looks great on my CV.” Dora has also enjoyed the social side to university: “I’ve met some brilliant people who I will definitely keep in touch with. We’ve gone through pretty much everything together for the past three years!” Having recently graduated, Dora explains: “I’ve matured quite a lot during my time at university and I feel ready to enter a profession now.”

Maryam Kayani LLB Law

Maryam has found great opportunities and a friendly environment on the LLB. “I like the fact that there are small numbers in classes, which is something I was looking for. I also like the way the course was set out at the university and the friendly atmosphere when I attended the open day,” Maryam says. “I very much enjoy the practical nature of the course. For example, we have a module named ‘Lawyer Skills’ in the second year which allows students to act as solicitors in a hypothetical case. The practical nature of the course allows you to put the theory into practice and better prepares students for the real world, I think, which is a unique opportunity which not all universities offer.” In choosing the LLB, Maryam will no doubt achieve her longterm goal of becoming either a practising barrister or solicitor.

For more information visit www.cumbria.ac.uk/psychology

She adds: “In the past two years of studying here, I’ve been given so many opportunities. I’ve taken part in national mooting competitions and been able to compete in the finals in one of the competitions which were held in London. We have also gained valuable experience visiting the Crown Court in Carlisle, and Lincoln’s Inn and Middle Temple at the Inns of Court in London.

“My lecturers alerted me to the Middle Temple Access to the Bar Award. I placed an application and was lucky enough to be given the award.” Maryam was selected for this award by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple for Barristers in London, from a large number of students from all over the country. The award allowed her to work for two weeks in a paid pupillage in areas of employment law and civil law.

Harry Powell BA (Hons) Drama

Working as an actor is something that Harry is passionate about and he wanted a course that would set him in good stead for his chosen career path. Harry says: “Whilst looking around, a lot of other drama courses had a massive focus on written work while overlooking the performance side. The performance side of acting is what moulds you, so I didn’t want that to be neglected. This course in Lancaster had a big focus on the physical side of drama which I always wanted while still incorporating the academic side.” The course also provided Harry with lots of opportunities to put his newly-learnt skills to the test.

The students perform at The Dukes Theatre in Lancaster, where they can showcase their talents and get a feel for real-life theatre work. Harry says:

“It gives you the chance to see how a real theatre works, behind the scenes and all. The chance to work in that environment just makes you want to work in a professional theatre more and more.”

Helen started her career as a dental nurse, then decided that she would like to return to education to kickstart a new direction in life. Helen’s husband runs his own company which has strong connections to the events industry which intrigued Helen.

“The more I read about events the more I realised it was a versatile industry with so many different career options. Not only are there incredibly successful event-management and marketing professionals teaching the course, but the work-experience roles students have undertaken demonstrate the huge variety of contacts the course has. Hannah Cross Graduate BSc (Hons) Animal Conservation Science

From the age of five, Hannah knew she wanted to work with animals and now she is realising her dream. Hannah is currently working towards her PhD. Her dissertation work for her undergraduate degree took Hannah to Norway, where she carried out research with lecturer Frank Rosell and his beaver team. After university, she returned to the country for a field season studying the Eurasian beaver, and then volunteered in Colorado in the Rockies working with Yellow-bellied marmots and in Australia with bottlenose dolphins. Hannah returned to Norway to continue her MSc and PhD study.

She credits gaining the experience, help and support at the University of Cumbria for her successes and says:

“It is impossible to do a PhD without a degree and studying at Cumbria gave me the skills to achieve this. For me to learn, I need a lot of one-on-one teaching and as the lecturers’ doors were always open, I could have this at Cumbria. Talking to friends who were enrolled at other universities it appears that this is not always the case!”

Entry requirements We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We consider your personal statement, reference and any relevant experience as well as your academic background and performance.

The UCAS points quoted for each course are explained in the UCAS tariff table on the opposite page or at www.ucas.com Please note that there may be additional, specific entry requirements for your individual course. You must check the relevant course page on our website for full details: www.cumbria.ac.uk/courses For professional courses such as teaching or healthcare you’ll be required to attend for an interview. Similarly, applicants for art and performance-based courses are invited to provide a portfolio of work or to prepare for an interview/audition/workshop as appropriate. Some courses allow you to submit an ePortfolio. BA/BSc/LLB (Hons) General entry requirements are that you need to be able to demonstrate evidence of ability in written English (for some courses this is by achieving grade C at GCSE) and one or more of the level 3 qualifications set out in the UCAS points tables on the opposite page.

182 / www.cumbria.ac.uk

The qualification entry requirements listed below are some of the most common, but this list is not exhaustive. Please contact us if you are unsure. BTEC A minimum of Diploma/Extended Diploma is required, depending on the course criteria. NVQ Level 3 If you offer NVQ Level 3, your application will be considered and you may be asked to complete supplementary work. Irish Leaving Certificate A minimum of four Higher/Honours grade passes is required. Access to HE Diploma A pass in a relevant Access to HE Diploma course is acceptable, though level 3 grades in specific subjects may be stipulated within some courses. Cambridge Pre-U Diploma We will accept this in combination with another level 3 qualification.

This first year (year 0) develops and extends your study skills in preparation for the next three years of degree-level study. See course-specific criteria on our website for further information. Pre-entry experience Many of our professional courses expect you to have tested your motivation and commitment by having some experience in your intended

career through paid or voluntary work, or by at least having visited a relevant department and spoken to professionals. You need to check the individual subject entry on our website and to reflect your motivation and commitment in your personal statement. Health/DBS clearances In addition to academic entry requirements, if you are accepted onto any course involving a placement (for example, teaching and health/social care) you will need a satisfactory occupational health clearance and/or Disclosure and Barring Service background clearance prior to registration. There is normally a charge for completing the DBS disclosure procedure. You will also be subject to any other national professional requirement introduced prior to your admission. Applicants whose first language is not English Applying for undergraduate courses requires a minimum level of IELTS 6.0–7.0 or equivalent unless otherwise specified. For details on English language qualifications we accept, please email intadmissions@cumbria.ac.uk Please see course details for specific score required. Please note—you must be able to provide, prior to registration, evidence of all the qualifications you list on your application form. All certificates must be supplied no later than 31 August prior to starting your course in September.

Making your application Full-time courses Apply online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), between 1 September 2014 and 15 January 2015; they will send your application on to us. Applications submitted after this date will be considered late and the course you have applied for might be full by this time; however, we will consider you for alternative suitable courses. Their website (www.ucas.com) provides all the information you need about universities, courses, locations, entry requirements and financial support. You are allowed to select up to five course choices; the UCAS application fee is £12.00 for a single choice and £23.00 for two to five choices. (Fees correct at time of print.) You need to use the correct UCAS campus and course codes as not all courses are offered at every campus. You will be asked for the following information when you apply online: • institution code name: UoC • institution code: C99 • campus location: A Ambleside B  Brampton Road, Carlisle E  University of Cumbria at Energus, Workington F  Fusehill Street, Carlisle L  Lancaster T  University of Cumbria in London Y University of Cumbria at Furness College, Barrow-in-Furness

Part-time courses Applications should be made online directly to the university—visit our website or contact enquirycentre@cumbria. ac.uk for details and guidance. There is no official closing date but we would encourage you to apply as early as possible, as many courses are competitive. What makes a good application? We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We look at your academic background and performance, relevant experience (particularly for professional courses where some voluntary or paid experience is required) and your reference. Above all, we look for motivation, commitment and potential—evidence that you can benefit from study at higher education level. Make sure you include • Relevant qualifications/evidence of ability: check our website for the specific entry requirements required for each course. Tell us your previous academic results and your projected grades. • A supportive reference, from an employer or your school or college. • A good personal statement. Explain clearly what attracts you to the course and tell us about your wider interests and experience. If you are applying for a course that incorporates professional training and placements you should include any relevant experience or visits you have made in the workplace. Highlight your individual strengths and qualities, personal skills, capacity for teamwork, contribution to the community and your enterprise, originality and determination. Select some activities which bring out these qualities.

Making your application is continued on the next page 185

Find out more at www.cumbria.ac.uk/ support

What next? When we receive your application, we will send you an acknowledgement and if you are successful at this stage you will get either—an offer (with an invitation to visit the campus to which you have applied), or—an invitation to interview on a particular date. If we are not able to offer you a place on your chosen course we will usually try to offer you a place on a similar course and will contact you to discuss this. Alternatively, if we think you are suitable, but cannot offer you a place on your preferred campus because of the level of competition, we will offer you a place at another campus if one is available. And if I accept? The admissions team will contact you and send further information from February onwards about accommodation, and from May/June onwards about preparing to join the university. If you have any other queries, please telephone the admissions offices for information and advice on 0845 6061144. Deferred entry We welcome applications for deferred entry on some courses. If you have specific plans during your year out, indicate these on your personal statement as they may be relevant to your course and could enhance your application. International students Applications for full-time undergraduate study are made through UCAS. Please see the international pages of our website for full details of our entry requirements (including English-language skills) as well as contacts for advice and support.

From March 2009 the UK Border Agency introduced a Points-Based Immigration System (PBS) for students coming to the UK from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). UK education providers are licensed by the UK Border Agency. When students apply for their visa (or entry clearance) they will need a valid Certificate of Acceptance of Studies from the university. Please note the CAS is not a guarantee that the visa will be issued. See the following websites for further details: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ studyingintheuk www.ukcisa.org.uk Equality and diversity We are committed to creating a positive environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and is supported in the development of their careers and studies.
