The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
“Our prime educational objective is to form Men for Others for the greater honor and glory of God.”
This simple quote, made decades ago by the head of the Jesuits, sums up everything you need to know about U of D Jesuit High School & Academy. In the following pages you’ll learn about our outstanding academics, elite college counseling program and co-curriculars, as well as our premier athletic programs and much more. In one way or another, all of it brings us back to this quote on this page. U of D Jesuit’s goal is to take an incoming student and challenge him, open his eyes to the world around him and demand excellence in all things. But most importantly, it is to form him as a Man for Others, willing to help those in our society who are most vulnerable and lend his support. If we simply provide outstanding academics, co-curriculars and athletics with little regard to the molding of the spirit and the heart, then we fail in our primary objective.

The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
In June 2015, U of D Jesuit took a bold step into the future of learning and for its future students, breaking ground on an $16-million, 40,000-square-foot Science and Engineering Center. The facility, which debuted at the start of the 2016-2017 school year, reaffirms the school’s profile as a leader in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The STEM center doubles the space for Biology, Chemistry and Physics studies, and provides labs for engineering and research, as well as U of D Jesuit’s nationally recognized Eco-car and Robotics programs. In addition, there are dedicated classrooms for seventh- and eighth-grade students. It is the first and only high school facility of its kind in Detroit and represents the largest dollar investment in science and technology at any Michigan high school in recent years.

The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
In terms of education, there are many trends and fads that are popular one day and scorned the next. Whether it is charter school education, full-year academic years, International Baccalaureate programs (IB) or home schooling, you can always find someone touting theirs as the answer to the country’s educational woes. All educational ideas have merits. However, one educational system has stood the test of time more than any other – a Jesuit education. The Society of Jesus, known simply as the Jesuits, is a Catholic religious order known for its unrivaled educational excellence. (Our current pope, Francis, is a Jesuit.) Hallmarks of a Jesuit education are simple to list, but hard to accomplish: • Excellence • Critical Thinking • Reflection • Action Founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius Loyola, Jesuits have gone on to open more than 800 secondary schools, universities and seminaries around the world. If you are a college basketball fan, you are probably familiar with some of the Jesuit colleges, who seem to have a knack for appearing in the NCAA March Madness tournament each spring. At one time, almost every teacher at U of D Jesuit was a priest or brother. As times have changed and lay faculty taken the lead, all faculty members learn the keys to instilling a Jesuit education in their students. This dedication continues to set our school apart from any other. The process of educating a young man at U of D Jesuit has evolved over our 144 years, but we still promote the same thing we did 5, 25, 50 or 100 years ago: nothing compares to a Jesuit education!

Our History U of D Jesuit’s history, and that of the City of Detroit and State of Michigan, have been intertwined since the school’s founding in 1877. Founded by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1877, the school’s original location sat on Jefferson Avenue not far from where today, General Motors’ World Headquarters at the Renaissance Center stand. In fact, the original school building still exists and is part of the University of Detroit Mercy Law School campus. In 1931, the school moved to its current location on Seven Mile Road on a 12-acre site, costing a whopping $766,700 to construct. In 1950, as the city’s population continued to explode and the state enjoyed the post-war boom, the current gymnasium was built. The late 1960s and 1970s brought about change in both the city and at The High, the name alumni often call U of D Jesuit. After the 1967 riots, Detroit saw people moving out of the city and the school experienced severe financial challenges. In an effort to bolster sagging enrollment, the school added The Jesuit Academy, inviting seventh- and eighth-grade boys to attend class at 8400 South Cambridge. The school’s leadership also explored its own potential move to the suburbs. Perhaps the most significant decision in the school’s history came in the mid-1970s. Under significant pressure to move and seeing other Catholic schools close or move to the suburbs, the Jesuits made the decision to remain in the city and commit to continuing to provide the highest quality, college prep education in and around Detroit. The school reached out to serve residents of the entire Detroit metropolitan area. By the 1990s, with a new science center constructed, the school began to again grow enrollment and balance its financial books. In 1996, the school launched a $25 million effort to renovate and construct new facilities. These included classrooms, band room, art room, library and media center, cafeteria, computer labs, and a secondary gymnasium, all while restoring the school’s beloved chapel to its original use.

The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
You’ll often hear people say, “I’m not sure what they do at U of D Jesuit, but they sure turn out fine young men.” There is no special secret recipe that we keep hidden from others. However, our educational process is more than non-fiction reading, geometric shapes, computers, soccer fields and marching band. Those all certainly have a place in our school. But we attempt to educate the heart as well as the mind and body. How do we do it? We start by looking ahead. We, as a Jesuit school, ask ourselves, “What do we want a student to be when he walks out our doors at graduation.” We use a document called “The Grad @ Grad.” It states that as a Jesuit school, we need to develop students five different ways. Upon graduation, characteristics embedded in our young men are: • Open to Growth • Intellectually Competent • Religious • Loving • Committed to Doing Justice

All of our students attend Theology classes at U of D Jesuit. We are proud of our rich Catholic identity. However, many of our students (36%) are not Catholic and practice numerous religions, both Christian and non-Christian. Our Theology classes help students understand the basis for beliefs and challenges, and strengthens their own personal beliefs. Theology courses, masses, retreats, chapel visits, and daily prayer all combine to provide students with the opportunity to grow in their prayer life and in their faith.

The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
U of D Jesuit’s commitment to service and justice cannot be matched. Community service and outreach have played an integral role in our students’ education. Long before service was viewed as a key part of a high school curriculum, U of D Jesuit students were volunteering on the front lines of poverty, homelessness and many other significant social causes. Starting in 1971, a requisite for graduation from The High required each senior to spend their Wednesday mornings performing service. It is the oldest such program in Michigan. Currently, our students serve at over 50 locations throughout Metro Detroit, working at soup kitchens, elementary schools, senior citizen centers, hospitals and many other locales. The service is very hands-on. As much as our students give of themselves, they receive much, much more. Each year, students have opportunities to be involved in service projects throughout the year. Whether it is collecting food or clothing, delivering food with Focus:HOPE or a new student-led inititiative, the school year is filled with service opportunities. In the summer, students have the opportunity to take part in extended service trips. Students spend a week or more away from home in communities as close as downtown Detroit or Chicago and as distant as Costa Rica, Equador, Spain or other Central American destinations. Partial List of agencies served by U of D Jesuit students: • Focus: HOPE • Capuchin Soup Kitchen • Cesar Chavez Academy • Dingell VA Medical Center • Henry Ford Hospital • Lighthouse Hospice • Big Brothers/Big Sisters • Bagley Elementary • Little Angels Nursery School • Woodhaven Retirement Community • Gleaners Community Food Bank

Our faculty plays an integral part in developing our students in more than just their core subjects. Numerous educators with advanced degrees, our faculty hold the titles showing they are well qualified to guide and educate. More important than undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees is the fact that they care, the most coveted quality found in all our teachers. Our faculty go the extra mile to make sure their students succeed – in their classroom and in the game of life. They spend time tutoring and assisting students but they also spend the time outside the classroom to get to know their students’ personal side. The Arts: Music, Art & Theater
39
The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
The arts play a critical component in educating a young man. U of D Jesuit’s art, music, and theater programs all provide avenues for our students to explore these creative areas. Our music program consists of seven musical groups on campus (Symphonic/Marching Band, Cub Choir, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, Concert Band). Over a typical school year, the musical groups perform in front of audiences on or off campus approximately 35 times, including two fine arts festivals held at school. Our band receives excellent evaluations in competition and annually plans a large trip. In 2015, the band traveled to Nashville and the Smokey Mountains. The year prior they flew to Hawaii. Our art program offers something for everyone – from the beginner just starting to explore their artistic abilities to the advanced artist. Over the past five years, 15 Scholastic Art Awards have been earned by U of D Jesuit students, with 19 seniors submitting AP Art portfolios over the past five years. With numerous classes in everything from drawing to ceramics, students have many options. Our theater program produces two plays annually, one a musical, that each debut to rave reviews and sold-out audiences. Over 130 students are involved in a typical spring show including actors, carpenters and stage crew, house and effect managers. Female roles are filled by young women from neighboring Catholic, public, and charter schools.

The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
Technically, the school day ends when the final bell rings at 2:45 p.m. But all of our students have heard the saying, “Don’t be a 2:45 man.” If a student calls it a day at 2:45, he’s not getting the total U of D Jesuit experience. After school, our students head many ways on our campus, attending meetings, writing and editing, debating, building cars and much, much more. Many of our co-curricular activities were originally proposed by students to fuel their interest in a subject. After school, while learning in a different way, you develop the friendships that will end up lasting a lifetime. We offer over 40 co-curricular activities, many that have won local, state, and national awards in competition. The Academy has its own separate co-curricular offerings as well as those shared with the high school. It’s a time of celebration, tinged with a bit of sadness, when after four or six years of spending hours, days, months and years walking through the hallowed halls of 8400 South Cambridge, the day comes when that must end. The Jesuit Experience. More than an Education.
Are you ready to be a Cub? Choosing a high school is a very difficult decision with numerous factors in play at one time. For almost 140 years, a special type of young man has made a decision that he won’t regret: spending his high school years at U of D Jesuit. For all, it is a decision that shapes the rest of their life. For most, there are schools that are easier academically and would make getting good grades easier. For a lot, there are schools that are much closer making the trip to school much quicker. For all, there are options available that are much more financially attractive on a family budget. For many, there are schools in which more friends will attend. For all, there are schools that have more girls in attendance. And yet, each year a waiting list of students accumulates made up of students willing to learn more, work harder, travel farther, and celebrate in the special brotherhood that is U of D Jesuit. Are you one of these special young men?
