STUDENT RESEARCH Research and scholarly activity are vital components of the Detroit Mercy Dental mission. Throughout curriculum and coursework, you will be introduced to aspects of the research method and gain skills in evidence-based decision making. Faculty and students engage in multiple disciplines including educational, material, retrospective health records, basic biomedical and clinical research. Our students have chaired oral presentation sessions at research meetings, received national competitive travel awards, nationally competitive research fellowships, and authored publications in peerreviewed dental journals. We are committed to developing the future of oral healthcare. To advance scholarly activity and innovation, we continue to make meaningful investments in infrastructure, laboratory space, leading edge technology and equipment, and faculty support.

Student Research Program Our student research program matches students with a faculty mentor who will help to guide the research process. Together, they work to formulate a hypothesis, prepare a research proposal, gain Institutional Review Board approval if necessary, and complete a project. The goal is for students to present projects at annual sessions of dental professional organizations and specialty meetings. Our students continue to be successful in pursuing scholarly activity, and have presented poster and oral presentations at local, state, national and international levels.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY...

“As students, we consume a lot of science, but in research I can play an active role in advancing science and therefore, health. Research has taught me how stay curious, ask questions and keep learning, all which is essential to life after dental school.”

– Abraham Khanafer ‘17 15

COMMUNITY-BASED CLINICAL EXPERIENCES Community based experiences are the capstone of public health learning and an essential part of our curriculum. You will encounter and recognize significant cultural competencies, social determinants, and health disparities that plague our society. Our programs help to create sustainable solutions for populations in need and have measurable health impacts on communities.

Mobile Dental Clinic During the DS4 year, students treat patients at our eight-chair mobile clinic, which is equipped to provide comprehensive care to children and adults and travels throughout metro Detroit.

Service-Learning Rotations Fourth-year students attend rotations at partnering community clinics. There, you will encounter and address access to care issues in underserved areas throughout Michigan, as well as confront unique clinical experiences and patient contact scenarios.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY... “As I transitioned from the classroom into clinic, it was scary, but I was also extremely excited because I knew I was properly prepared. Clinical concepts are integrated into didactic work from the very start of our education. The curriculum is intended for us to be thinking about treating patients beginning on our first day at Detroit Mercy Dental.” – Jordan Komyathy ‘17 19

BE PART OF COMMUNITY

DEVELOPING STUDENT AWARENESS We believe service is much more than the activity itself – it is about meeting, and understanding, the needs of the community through direct patient care. Through our outreach activities, you will develop awareness and sensitivity to a culturally diverse population, which will help you to understand the value and inherent responsibility of the profession to care for those in need. During your education at Detroit Mercy Dental, you will have the opportunity to engage in multiple outreach projects in Detroit and surrounding areas. From mouth guard clinics to traveling abroad providing care to underserved populations, you will take pride in knowing you have made a difference in the lives of others.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY... There are always outreach events to participate in and every activity I have taken part of has been incredibly rewarding. Through interaction with community members and providing care to those in need, I can feel myself becoming not only a better clinician, but a more compassionate provider.

– Alex Bae ‘18 23

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES St. Vincent de Paul-Detroit, Student Run Dental Center Student volunteers provide free dental care to underserved adults at the St. Vincent de Paul-Detroit Dental Center. All logistics are handled by students, including administrative and clinical duties. This project increases access to oral health care, reduces oral health disparities and teaches students awareness of needs in surrounding communities.

Oral Health Pregnancy Day This interdisciplinary program provides opportunity for Detroit Mercy dental students and OB-GYN residents at Wayne State University to practice coordinating care and make referrals; it also aims to improve patient knowledge as it relates to pregnancy.

Mouthguard Clinic To reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries, we host on-location clinics to make custom fit mouthguards for adolescent sports teams in the community. Students provide proper fitting, instructions on wearing, cleaning and storing the appliance, in addition to a dental screening.

Men’s Health Event The Michigan Institute of Urology’s Men’s Health Event provides free health screenings to men in our community. Student volunteers provide oral cancer screenings and oral health education to patients at Detroit’s Ford Field; an excellent opportunity for students to identify potentially life threatening conditions.

Give Kids a Smile Throughout the year, we host a multi-day format of the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile Day; oral screenings and cleanings are provided for children at no cost.

Special Olympics Special Smiles Detroit Mercy Dental Special Needs Clinic supports Special Olympics Special Smiles of Michigan by providing a dental home for athletes. Students gain experience in treating patients with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Mission Trips You will have the opportunity to travel with a student group partnering with dental mission organizations to provide care overseas. In the past, students have traveled to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, and elsewhere. 24
