From classroom to clinic, all educational settings are supplied with a variety of sophisticated digital learning equipment. By incorporating modern technologies, you will graduate as an advantaged provider with the necessary skills, critical thinking abilities, and knowledge essential to be successful in your profession.

17

UDMSD CAMPUS CLINICS Corktown The Corktown Campus became UDMSD’s home in 2008 and is a contemporary facility. More than $2 million has been invested in new equipment, including 187 dental chairs, more than $200,000 of radiology and digital screening equipment and $300,000 of new dispensary equipment. We utilize electronic health records, digital radiography, CAD/ CAM units, as well as other cutting-edge technology. UDMSD clinics are the only sites for several types of specialist care offered in Detroit, providing unique and abundant learning experiences for students.

University Health Center The UDMSD’s hospital-based clinic is located at Detroit Receiving Hospital in the Detroit Medical Center complex. The Detroit Receiving Hospital/ University Health Center (DRH/UHC) is a 42-chair clinic, one of the largest hospital-based clinics of any dental school in the United States meeting the oral health needs of thousands of patients each year.

COMMUNITY-BASED CLINICAL EXPERIENCES Mobile Dental Clinic During the DS4 year, you will have the opportunity to treat patients as part of the mobile clinic program. The four-chair coach is equipped to provide comprehensive care and travels to metro Detroit elementary schools, providing care to children throughout the year.

Service-Learning Rotations During the fourth-year curriculum, you will be required to attend three two-week rotations at partnering community clinics. There, you will not only encounter and address access to care issues in underserved areas throughout Michigan, but also confront unique clinical experiences and patient contact scenarios you would not otherwise receive without our community partners.

What our students have to say... “At UDMSD, we are given a tremendous amount of opportunity for hands-on learning. With the guidance and teaching of the faculty, I have realized how dynamic and rewarding dentistry is for clinicians.” – Brian Schmitz ‘16 19

COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service is an integral component of UDMSD’s mission to develop socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals. Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of activities including oral health education and comprehensive and preventative programs to target underserved populations. Located in a designated oral health professional shortage area, UDMSD takes pride in our extensive history of providing services to a genuinely beneficial population; we are committed to improving the oral health of our community.

21

22 UDM SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY

BE PART OF COMMUNITY

DEVELOPING STUDENT AWARENESS We believe service is much more than the activity itself — it is about meeting the needs in the community through direct patient care and teaching students the value of helping others. With all of our outreach initiatives, we strive to highlight multicultural interactions which enhance students’ awareness and sensitivity to a culturally-diverse population. Aside from community-based clinical rotations, which are embedded in our curriculum, you will have the opportunity to engage in multiple outreach projects in Detroit and surrounding areas. From mouth guard clinics to traveling abroad providing care to underserved populations, there is an abundance of opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.

What our students have to say... “As dental professionals, it is our ethical commitment to encourage widespread dental care to as many people as possible; this means not simply those who seek it at various clinics or offices, but those who do not know or understand the importance of dental care for their overall well being.” – Remi Ajluni ‘16 23

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Mission Trips You will have the opportunity to travel with a variety of student groups who partner with dental mission organizations to provide care overseas. In the past, students have represented UDMSD in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, and elsewhere throughout the world.

TeamSmile In collaboration with TeamSmile and the Detroit Lions, students at UDMSD head to Ford Field to address oral health disparities of metro Detroit’s children. Coaches and players attend the event to reinforce the importance of oral health and staying in school.

Give Kids a Smile Day This annual event provides free educational, preventative and restorative services to children from low-income families. Students, faculty and staff work together to make a difference to the many children in attendance.

Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Walk This student-run event brings understanding to issues related to oral cancers, while also fundraising to support the oral biopsy fund for UDMSD patients. This event enables students to participate in an educationally focused project with peers, alumni, faculty and staff.

St. Vincent de Paul-Detroit, Student Run Dental Center Student and faculty volunteers provide free dental care to underserved and uninsured adults at the St. Vincent de Paul-Detroit Dental Center for two Saturdays per month. All logistics are handled by students, including administrative and clinical duties. This project increases access to oral health care and reduces oral health disparities. The clinic also teaches students compassion and awareness of needs in surrounding communities, as well as demonstrates the importance of donating time and services.
