BE PART OF COMMUNITY
DEVELOPING STUDENT AWARENESS We believe service is much more than the activity itself — it is about meeting the needs in the community through direct patient care and teaching students the value of helping others. With all of our outreach initiatives, we strive to highlight multicultural interactions which enhance students’ awareness and sensitivity to a culturally-diverse population. Aside from community-based clinical rotations, which are embedded in our curriculum, you will have the opportunity to engage in multiple outreach projects in Detroit and surrounding areas. From mouth guard clinics to traveling abroad providing care to underserved populations, there is an abundance of opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
What our students have to say... “As dental professionals, it is our ethical commitment to encourage widespread dental care to as many people as possible; this means not simply those who seek it at various clinics or offices, but those who do not know or understand the importance of dental care for their overall well being.” – Remi Ajluni ‘16 23
OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Mission Trips You will have the opportunity to travel with a variety of student groups who partner with dental mission organizations to provide care overseas. In the past, students have represented UDMSD in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, and elsewhere throughout the world.
TeamSmile In collaboration with TeamSmile and the Detroit Lions, students at UDMSD head to Ford Field to address oral health disparities of metro Detroit’s children. Coaches and players attend the event to reinforce the importance of oral health and staying in school.
Give Kids a Smile Day This annual event provides free educational, preventative and restorative services to children from low-income families. Students, faculty and staff work together to make a difference to the many children in attendance.
Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Walk This student-run event brings understanding to issues related to oral cancers, while also fundraising to support the oral biopsy fund for UDMSD patients. This event enables students to participate in an educationally focused project with peers, alumni, faculty and staff.
St. Vincent de Paul-Detroit, Student Run Dental Center Student and faculty volunteers provide free dental care to underserved and uninsured adults at the St. Vincent de Paul-Detroit Dental Center for two Saturdays per month. All logistics are handled by students, including administrative and clinical duties. This project increases access to oral health care and reduces oral health disparities. The clinic also teaches students compassion and awareness of needs in surrounding communities, as well as demonstrates the importance of donating time and services.
