CRITERIA FOR

ADMISSION

ACADEMIC PREPARATION To be considered a candidate for Detroit Mercy Dental, the following is required:

BIOCHEMISTRY: 3 semester hours (6-quarter hours) BIOLOGY: 8 semester hours (12-quarter hours) of General Biology or non-environmental including Zoology, Anatomy, Physiology, or Histology

CHEMISTRY: 8 semester hours (12-quarter hours) of Inorganic General Chemistry with laboratory

PHYSICS: 8 semester hours (12-quarter hours) with laboratory

8 semester hours (12-quarter hours) of Organic Chemistry with laboratory

ENGLISH: 6 semester hours (9-quarter hours) First year college courses in Composition, and other writing intensive courses will satisfy the requirement

MICROBIOLOGY: 3 semester hours (5-quarter hours)


BECOME PART OF DETROIT MERCY DENTAL

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT A minimum science grade point average of 3.00 is recommended. Candidates who demonstrate strong, steady academic improvement within a challenging science curriculum for a period of three to six terms may be more strongly considered.

JOB SHADOWING Applicants are required to spend a minimum of 60 hours in a general dentist’s office to observe patient treatment, office interaction and become accustomed to what a typical day may be like in your future.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION The following letters of recommendation are required: Composite letter from the applicant’s college/ university pre-professional advisory committee, or if such committee does not exist: Two letters from a science instructor within nonplant or non-environmental disciplines of biology, chemistry or physics Dentist attesting to the applicant having spent a reasonable amount of time with the practitioner exploring the dental profession

APPLICATION PROCEDURE Detroit Mercy Dental utilizes the Associated American Dental Schools Application Services (AADSAS). This service is available to all students applying to dental schools participating in the service. When you use AADSAS, you complete just one application. Applications are available from early-June through February 1 of each year Visit the American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) to submit your electronic application: www.portal.aadsasweb.org A non-refundable application fee of $125.00 (U.S. currency, money order ONLY) is due at the time of application and should be sent directly to Detroit Mercy Dental along with a 2”x 2” photograph with the applicant’s signature and AADSAS ID number on the back

All applicants for admission are required to take the Dental Admission Test (DAT). This computerized examination, administered at various Prometric test centers, is available most days of the year. All scores will be considered for applicants making multiple attempts at the DAT.

AADSAS will not forward your application to Detroit Mercy Dental until they have received your transcripts from all colleges/universities you have attended to date.

SELECTION CRITERIA The Director of Dental Admissions and Admissions Committee members review all completed applications to select applicants for admission to Detroit Mercy Dental. Selection for admissions is based upon various components of an application, which may include cognitive and non-cognitive components:

Admissions Interviews Some applicants being seriously considered may be invited for an interview in order to gain information not readily acquired from the application.

Rigor of undergraduate curriculum Academic performance in undergraduate studies DAT scores Personal characteristics and potential for success as determined by letters of recommendation, personal statement, and personal interviews Compatibility of applicant with respect to institutional mission and values Ability of candidate to contribute to overall diversity of institution to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment
