MEET THE DEAN Mert N. Aksu, D.D.S., J.D., M.H.S.A. Mert N. Aksu was named Dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry in July 2008. Dean Aksu has served as a faculty member and administrator at the School of Dentistry since 1993.

Dean Aksu earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences and Psychology from the University of Michigan Dearborn, a masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, a D.D.S. from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, a J.D. from Wayne State University, and a certificate specializing in Public Health from Case Western Reserve University. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health. Dean Aksu is a former attending staff of Henry Ford Health Systems, a member of the State Bar of Michigan, and is a Fellow with the American College of Legal Medicine, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry, and Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dean Aksu has held numerous administrative positions at the school, including associate dean for clinic administration and executive associate dean. Through his leadership, he began a number of activities to further the mission of Detroit Mercy and the school. He was the founding chairperson of the Department of Patient Management, enhanced community outreach opportunities, and fostered an environment of patient care, based on a comprehensive care model.

CURRICULUM Our four-year Doctor of Dental Surgery curriculum courses are structured and sequenced to provide a clinically-relevant education with a strong foundation of the knowledge, skills and values to provide comprehensive patient care. Detroit Mercy Dental clinics are key components of our community’s oral health network where you will gain a robust clinical education experience. An integrated education model facilitates the application of biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences; you will learn from not only experts in oral health, but specialists in a variety of other health professions. This inter-disciplinary approach reinforces students’ critical thinking skills and ability to provide evidence-based patient care.

Your education will create a foundation, instilling fundamental knowledge, skills and values in didactic, pre-clinical and clinical settings. Initial threads of the curriculum include biomedical science courses structured around basic science disciplines.
You will continue to study biomedical sciences, but the curriculum transitions to further emphasize knowledge related to the oro-facial complex oral systemic connections and behavioral sciences. You will also have opportunity to assist upperclassmen in clinic.

Curriculum now shifts to patient care. You will establish a comprehensive care practice treating actual patients in the Corktown Clinic. The schedule includes daily clinical assignments, and focused seminars and classes each morning, in addition to providing comprehensive care to patients under the supervision of faculty.
A similar schedule of clinic and seminars continues. You will still provide comprehensive care to your patient families in the Corktown Clinic, but also see patients at the University Health Center (UHC), a 42-chair hospital-based clinic located at the Detroit Medical Center. In addition, you will have unique opportunities to treat patients through our community-based learning rotations.

OFFICE OF STUDENT SERVICES & ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT Office of Diversity and Inclusion To support unique needs of our students, faculty and staff, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion provides advising, programming, and intercultural competence training that meaningfully engages diverse backgrounds. We are dedicated to building an inclusive community that is culturally and socially sensitive to the needs of a global society.
Educational Support One-on-one support and Academic Success Workshops are available for students in need of developing tools such as study skills, testtaking strategies, exam preparation and time management.
Office of Health and Wellness Our Health and Wellness Counselor is a resource for all students to have access to personal counseling and coaching services in a variety of areas including mental health, emotional wellness, relationship issues, professional growth and development, performance enhancement, and others. Also offered are group sessions and workshops on various topics to learn skills and strategies for personal, academic, and professional success in an environment that is safe, supportive and engaging. 10

Big Sibling Program As an incoming student, you are partnered with a second-year student to help navigate your transition into Detroit Mercy Dental.
Tutors and Teaching Assistants Students with consistent, documented academic success in biomedical science courses are hired by the School as potential tutors. Tutors work with faculty course directors to provide academic support for enrolled students, at no cost.

STUDENT ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry provides dental students with opportunities for academic leadership development through two programs. The research arm of the program is the Student Research Program, while the teaching arm is called Explorations in Dentistry.
Student Research Program The Student Research Program matches students with a faculty member who mentors them through the research process. They collaborate to formulate a hypothesis, prepare a research proposal, gain Institutional Review Board approval, and complete a project. Faculty and students engage in multiple disciplines including educational, dental materials, retrospective health records, basic biomedical, and clinical research. The goals of the program are for students to present at annual sessions of dental professional educational and research organizations and to publish. Our students have chaired sessions at meetings, received national competitive travel awards, nationally competitive research fellowships, and coauthored publications in peer-reviewed dental journals.
Explorations in Dentistry The Explorations in Dentistry program was developed for the dental student who is considering a career in academic dentistry. The first goal of Explorations in Dentistry is to provide pre-doctoral students with an opportunity to design and implement an academic course that provides both didactic and laboratory experiences. The second goal is to provide undergraduate students interested in the dental profession with an opportunity to participate in a hands-on course in basic dental principles. Many of the students who take the course as an undergraduate go on to teach in the course as a dental student. Some have even become faculty at Detroit Mercy Dental.

DETROIT MERCY DENTAL CLINICS Detroit Mercy Dental offers extensive hands-on clinical training in a variety of settings including; an on-campus clinic, a hospitalbased clinic, mobile dental unit, and community-based rotations at partnering sites throughout the state of Michigan. These diverse and unique opportunities prepare you to treat a range of patients and perform complex procedures. Detroit Mercy Dental ensures excellent practical experience so you will hit the ground running in your career. From classroom to clinic, all educational settings are supplied with a variety of sophisticated digital learning equipment. By incorporating modern technologies, you will graduate as an advantaged provider with the necessary skills, critical thinking abilities, and knowledge essential to be successful in your profession.

DETROIT MERCY DENTAL CAMPUS CLINICS Corktown The Corktown Campus became Detroit Mercy Dental’s home in 2008 and is a contemporary facility. More than $2 million has been invested in new equipment, including 187 dental chairs, more than $200,000 of radiology and digital screening equipment and $300,000 of new dispensary equipment. We utilize electronic health records, digital radiography, CAD/ CAM units, as well as other cutting-edge technology. Detroit Mercy Dental clinics are the only sites for several types of specialist care offered in Detroit, proving us to be an invaluable resource to our community. As a result, this provides unique and abundant learning experiences for students.
University Health Center The Detroit Mercy Dental’s hospital-based clinic is located at Detroit Receiving Hospital/ University Health Center (UHC) in the Detroit Medical Center. UHC is a 42-chair clinic, one of the largest hospital-based clinics of any dental school in the United States, meeting the oral health needs of thousands of patients each year.

COMMUNITY-BASED CLINICAL EXPERIENCES Community based experiences are the capstone of public health learning and an essential part of our curriculum. You will encounter and recognize significant cultural competencies, social determinants, and health disparities that plague our society. Our programs help to create sustainable solutions for populations in need and have measurable health impacts on communities.
Mobile Dental Clinic During the third and fourth years, students treat patients at our eightchair mobile clinic, which is equipped to provide comprehensive care to children and adults and travels throughout metro Detroit.
Service-Learning Rotations Fourth-year students attend rotations at partnering community clinics. There, you will encounter and address access to care issues in underserved areas throughout Michigan, as well as confront unique clinical experiences and patient contact scenarios.

Although you can never be truly prepared to swap typodonts for humans, our coursework integrated clinical scenarios from the beginning. COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service is an integral component of Detroit Mercy Dental’s mission to develop socially and ethically sensitive health professionals. Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of activities including oral health education, comprehensive, and preventative programs to target underserved populations. Located in a designated oral health professional shortage area, Detroit Mercy Dental takes pride in our extensive history of providing services to a genuinely beneficial population; we are committed to improving the oral health of our community.

DEVELOPING STUDENT AWARENESS We believe service is much more than the activity itself – it is about meeting and understanding the needs of the community through direct patient care. Through outreach activities, you will develop awareness and sensitivity to a culturally diverse population, which will help you to understand the value and inherent responsibility of the profession to care for those in need. During your education at Detroit Mercy Dental, you will have the opportunity to engage in multiple outreach projects in Detroit and surrounding areas. From mouth guard clinics to traveling abroad providing care to underserved populations, you will take pride in knowing you have made a difference in the lives of others.

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES HUDA Clinic, Student Run Dental Center Student volunteers provide free dental care to underserved adults at the HUDA Clinic. All logistics are handled by students, including administrative and clinical duties. These projects increase access to oral health care, reduce oral health disparities and teach students awareness of needs in surrounding communities.
Mouthguard Clinic To reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries, we host on-location clinics to make custom fit mouthguards for adolescent sports teams in the community. Students provide proper fitting, instructions on wearing, cleaning and storing the appliance, in addition to a dental screening.
Men’s Health Event The Michigan Institute of Urology’s Men’s Health Event provides free health screenings to men in our community. Student volunteers provide oral cancer screenings and oral health education to patients at Detroit’s Ford Field; an excellent opportunity for students to identify potentially life threatening conditions.
Special Olympics Special Smiles Detroit Mercy Dental Special Needs Clinic supports Special Olympics Special Smiles of Michigan by providing a dental home for athletes. Students gain experience in treating patients with physical and cognitive disabilities.
Mission Trips You will have the opportunity to travel with a student group partnering with dental mission organizations to provide care overseas. In the past, students have traveled to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, and elsewhere.

Detroit Mercy Dental is located in the historic Corktown neighborhood, an area with an aesthetic offering a glimpse into the lives of generations of immigrants who helped build the city.
