WELCOME TO THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME The University of East London’s International Summer School offers students a hands-on learning experience both in and out of the classroom, from laboratory to studio to real-life projects and practical assignments. All field trips and guest speaker sessions will help you ‘learn by doing’, developing the skills and knowledge to boost the career you choose. We’re committed to providing you with a rich, experiential learning environment that will help you make the most of your summer learning and take on new challenges with confidence. Our location, with two modern campuses stretching between the Royal Docks to the edge of the Olympic Park in Stratford, offers a unique environment for learning, teaching and applied research. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The UEL International Summer School programme gives you a fantastic opportunity to experience the excitement of London life, make new friends from all over the world, and stretch your mind by studying one of our stimulating courses. The programmes can be used to build on your knowledge of an existing subject or to study something completely new. Most courses do not require previous knowledge of the subject, so you can study courses out of personal interest or develop academic knowledge of a new subject. Whichever course you choose, you’ll gain a fresh perspective on your studies. Studying abroad will broaden your outlook and bring your learning to life. Engaging. Interactive. Valuable. The UEL International Summer School offers access to valuable knowledge and experience in a wide range of fields. At the end of your course you will receive a certificate of attendance and UK credits transferable to your home university (selected modules only). You will also have access to a powerful network of international students and academics. All classes are small, friendly and interactive - so you’ll gain the maximum benefit from your studies.

WHERE LONDON IS ON YOUR DOORSTEP Dynamic, vibrant, diverse, fast-changing. East London is all of these and more. Our campuses in Stratford and Docklands are each less than a 30-minute train ride away from the centre of London – or nine minutes if you take the high-speed train from Stratford International. They are also connected to the centre of the capital by 24-hour buses, so it couldn’t be easier to get around.

What could be more inspiring than living and learning in one of the world’s greatest cities? London mixes old and new like no other city in the world. From historic buildings and monuments to world-famous museums and galleries, from exciting theatres and music venues to iconic sports stadiums, from renowned shopping districts, to restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets, London is a destination that has it all. To help you get to know this amazing city, we’ve built a number of afternoon trips and weekend excursions into our Summer School programme. You’ll explore attractions such as the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern Art Gallery and Regent’s Park, and get a taste of British history at the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral.

FASHION & TEXTILES Fashion Culture This course will give you a fascinating insight into the worldfamous London fashion scene, exploring the cultural and retail environments behind what has become known as ‘cool Britannia’. London fashion is synonymous with cutting-edge creativity while embracing a rich heritage of quality and craft. Designers work for established brands as well as nurturing an entrepreneurial and innovative design approach in their studios, many situated in the creative hub of East London.

BUSINESS London Financial Markets This course gives you the opportunity to study the economic functions and efficiency of financial institutions and markets in the United Kingdom. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the key theories and issues in finance and economics and develop the analytical skills you need to understand the inner workings of the financial world. And you’ll be learning in the perfect location, with the financial hubs of Canary Wharf and the City of London right on your doorstep. You’ll have the valuable opportunity to undertake Bloomberg introduction training, an important tool in the world of finance. You’ll also have the chance to go on stimulating visits to key financial institutions, including the London Stock Exchange, Bloomberg, the London Metal Exchange, and the Bank of England.

BUSINESS International Business and Communication If you’re an aspiring business leader or a young professional preparing to enter the world of work in an emerging and developing economy, this course is for you. It’s structured around the needs of speakers of English as a second language and will help you develop your applied knowledge of English. If you’re interested in improving your chances of finding the right career, the course includes optional Bloomberg training. You’ll also study a variety of business topics and apply your knowledge through case study work and interaction with corporate executives.

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT International Relations: Politics, Economics and Society This course will examine the rich research field of international relations and political economy as a way of training students to analyse the increasingly globalised environment in which they live. The course will be teamtaught by specialists, and students will learn about international policy, international political economy and the complex relations between nation states and understand the social effects of internationalism such as multiculturalism, international conflict, and the increasing international mobility of people, finance and ideas. This course is ideal for people who want to eventually pursue a career in a related profession, as well as for those who simply want to have a more nuanced and informed understanding of the world in which they live.

PSYCHOLOGY Psychology This will introduce you to selected topics from Psychology and provide you with a bite-sized version of some of what is taught at UEL. In this course you will focus on wellbeing and resilience in the face of conflict and disaster. We will touch on areas including Attachment and Human Security; Crises and Trauma; Positive Psychology; Personal Resilience; Spirituality; and Wellbeing in Practice. The course is a great insight into the range of ways psychology is studied at a university. With engaging lectures, team exercises and daily field trips, you are sure to maximise the London experience!

BIOSCIENCE Developing New Drugs from Plant-Based, Traditional Medicines This programme is a mainly laboratory-based practical course taught by professors and scientists with international research reputation. It offers students a unique opportunity to learn about the method and principles of developing drugs from plants and other natural medicinal products. Participants will gain experience in the techniques used: in the identification of relevant plant species; the isolation and identification of active ingredients using a variety of preparative and analytical techniques; to screen using bio-assays for pharmacological activity and toxicity; in bioinformatics, as well as the basic principles of drug development. It also includes guided field trips to relevant scientific establishments, as well as a full programme of cultural activities exploring what London has to offer.

SPORT & EXERCISE SCIENCE Sports Science This is an applied programme where students will have an opportunity to learn a range of scientific concepts applied to sport. The programme will be delivered in conjunction with West Ham United Foundation so students will have the added benefit of learning from colleagues from an elite Premier League Football Club. The programme will cover physiological and psychological concepts applied to sporting performance. Topics such as, strength and conditioning, injury prevention and sports nutrition will form part of the programme content. This course will be delivered at the University of East London’s SportsDock which was the training base for the USA Olympic team during the 2012 Games.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN Architecture: Making Cities Aimed at those who have an interest in architecture and design, the Making Cities course offers an energetic experience in the Architecture faculty. The programme is developed to give you first-hand experience of the design process while working with leading practitioners. You’ll have the chance to develop an architectural project in a school with excellent teaching and research and a unique ethos regarding social engagement, not to mention visits to iconic London landmarks!

ENGLISH LANGUAGE English Language & Culture This course focuses on listening and speaking in a variety of situations. You will practise your English language skills in social encounters and topical discussions, as well as presenting your thoughts to a small audience. You’ll communicate using text messages, instant messaging, and on the telephone. We will also cover other subjects based on your needs. As the emphasis is on successfully getting your message across, you will receive daily face-to-face and online feedback on your use of grammar, the intelligibility of your pronunciation, and your choice of words and phrases in context. Throughout the course we will encourage you to push your ability in English in a friendly, enjoyable atmosphere while experiencing the best of British culture.

As a UEL International Summer School student you’ll live and study on campus – so you won’t have to spend time travelling between your accommodation and the classroom. Our waterfront Student Village is located at our Docklands campus and is home to more than 1,200 students.
