WHERE YOU LEARN BY DOING 6

‘Learning by doing’ is central to the way we teach. Whatever subject you choose to study, our courses are designed to apply your developing expertise to real-life projects – so you’ll be prepared for the world of work. The way we teach is tailored to you. ——

At UEL, assessments reflect the real world of work. Your grades will often be based on reports and presentations, not essays and exams.

——

Interactive rather than passive learning. Our course modules are designed around debate, exploration, research, critical thinking and practical work.

——

Smaller class sizes. When it comes to learning, we don’t believe education should be about cramming hundreds of students into a lecture theatre. That’s why we’re moving towards smaller class sizes and more individual ways of teaching.

——

In addition to your degree, you’ll complete our unique Professional Development Certificate, choosing from modules such as global citizenship, volunteering, mentoring, social media and communications, entrepreneurship, dispute resolution and coaching. You’ll gain essential employment skills that will help you to stand out to prospective employers.

WHERE YO CAN MAKE DIFFERENC All over the world, University of East London students are making a real difference to people’s lives. By helping others you’ll gain the skills, values and experience that will help you to become a confident, stand-out individual – and highly attractive to employers. How you can change your world with the help of UEL: ——

Civic Engagement Fund: get involved with projects that make a difference to local communities

——

London Scholars: tackle real-life challenges in London

——

Going Global: take a visit overseas – from a few days to a few weeks – to enhance your studies and add a global dimension to your UEL experience.

OU EA NCE £100k

Money provided each year to nearly two dozen Civic Engagement projects involving UEL students – ranging from lung cancer awareness to promoting financial literacy.

Civic engagement in action: UEL is London’s leading university for civic engagement. As a student, this means giving you the opportunity for personal development by working on real-life projects that benefit communities locally and around the world. Legal Advice Centre Our acclaimed Legal Advice Centre is just one example of how we engage with local people. Staffed by volunteer tutors and students, the centre provides free legal services and public lectures to the east London community. And, of course, it’s fantastic experience for our student lawyers. University for All: Teaching in the Jungle At UEL we believe that education is an important human right. Staff and students put this principle into practice, delivering the accredited course ‘Life Stories’ to residents of the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais. The course gave rise to the book Voices from the Jungle (Pluto Press, 2017), and was such a success that it is now being extended to improve access to higher education elsewhere. Speech Bubbles To help children to communicate, UEL students studying education and performing arts delivered weekly drama workshops to young pupils in four Newham schools – with remarkable success. Teacher assessments show that following Speech Bubbles activity, 85 per cent of children improved their speaking, listening and learning, and 90 per cent of children improved their emotional conduct and behaviour. ...and many more Watch videos of our amazing projects in action at uel.ac.uk/ug-make-an-impact

Initially set up in UEL’s Knowledge Dock – which supports new businesses – Childreach International has raised over £17 million to date, reached over 700,000 children and their families and won many national awards along the way.

At UEL there’s a lot of teaching outside the classroom. I went out to Tanzania and spent four months studying at the University of Dar es Salaam. It opened my eyes to international development. I came back buzzing. I wanted to create social change. Firoz Patel BA (Hons) International Development and NGO Management, founder of the charity Childreach International.

We offer exciting opportunities for you to take your learning overseas – whether it’s examining the music industry in India, learning about the Great Depression in New York or studying business management in Seoul. Our students have made study trips to over 30 countries, travelling as far afield as Ghana, Vietnam, Iran, Jamaica and India. Students have coached underprivileged children in Malaysia, trained in martial arts in China and provided sports therapy to runners in the Berlin Marathon. At UEL, you can choose to travel abroad for a week, a month, or even a year, enabling you to fit overseas study around your life and work commitments.

18

uel.ac.uk/ug-places It was a truly fantastic trip and I would love to do it again. The experience really helped to enhance what I’d learned in class. Tannaz Arang, BSc (Hons) Health Services Management, went on a ‘Going Global’ trip to Buffalo, New York, to examine drugs policy in the US.

Visiting China enriched my education and university experience. I really enjoyed learning about Chinese cities and the challenges they face. Jaroslav Vohradsky, BA (Hons) International Development, took part in a summer exchange programme with a university in China.

The Erasmus+ programme is the reason I wanted to come to UEL. It meant I could study in the UK and Germany – one of the best places for engineering and product design. Sam Hughes, BSc (Hons) Product Design, studied in Germany for three months as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

Study abroad for a week, a month or even a year: —— Going Global: UEL bursary scheme for short study trips abroad ——

International exchange, study for a term or a year in an overseas university, across a choice of five continents

——

Erasmus+, spend a term at a partner university in Europe.

Why us?

Our students have strong employment prospects, and the quality of their work is reflected in the awards they receive. Our students have won prestigious awards from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Starpack, ARTS THREAD, and Design and Art Direction (D&AD). As a design graduate, you’ll be able to showcase your work at the University, the annual Free Range graduate exhibition for creative students, or the New Designers exhibition at the Business Design Centre. During your course you will gain real-world experience working on industrially relevant projects. We place a strong emphasis on completing ‘live’ group projects, as these will enable you to develop key interpersonal skills and the ability to negotiate and work collaboratively. We have a low student-to-staff ratio, which means you’ll get to work in small groups and have more contact with tutors and lecturers. You’ll be joining a creative hub of innovative design studios based within the adjoining School of Arts and Digital Industries.

This means you’ll be able to observe other design projects, share ideas, participate in cross-curricular competitions and enjoy evening lectures from inspiring designers. Whichever course you choose to study, you can be sure you’ll have plenty of field trips to help you keep up with the latest industry developments. Our students have visited exhibitions such as the Engineering Design Show, as well as prestigious construction projects like the Tate Modern Phase 2 Extension and the Canary Wharf Crossrail station. Interior Design students had the chance to visit Victoria Beckham’s new boutique in Mayfair, with interiors by celebrated US architect Farshid Moussavi. On many of our courses, you’ll also have the opportunity to take part in a study trip abroad to visit places of manufacture as well as leading international museums and exhibitions. We’ve travelled all over Europe as well as further afield to countries such as Japan and South Korea.
