The University of Exeter is situated in the South West of England, known for its breathtaking coastlines and beautiful scenery – and is conveniently located just two and a half hours from London by train. The St Luke’s Campus, which has retained a vibrant, collegiate atmosphere, is a 15-minute walk from the city centre, and is home to students in the Graduate School of Education, School of Sport and Health Sciences, and the Exeter Medical School. Postgraduate students benefit from a common room, accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, containing a social area, kitchen and a quiet room for studying. Academic facilities at the campus include a library, IT facilities and support, and modern seminar rooms and lecture theatres. St Luke’s has excellent facilities for sport, including a sports hall, gymnasium, air-conditioned health and fitness studio and an indoor heated swimming pool.

Built on more than 20 years’ experience of English language teaching, our Masters programme is seen as an important entry qualification worldwide to enable TESOL teachers to enhance their career prospects and specialise in specific areas. Whilst developing your knowledge and skills, the MEd TESOL will enable you to move into areas such as teacher education, English for Special Purposes, materials development and teaching English to young learners.

The programme offers you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in UK language schools, as well as develop your understanding of theoretical issues in language teaching and the implications of these for classroom practice. Throughout the programme we aim to develop your understanding of key aspects of linguistics and learning theory, and their influence on English language teaching. By the end of the course, you will be able to make informed professional decisions regarding language teaching in the workplace, and have the ability to select, adapt and design materials and activities for language teaching in a variety of contexts; skills highly sought after by employers. You will also have the ability to investigate and research aspects of TESOL in ways that will support your ongoing development as a foreign or second language teaching professional, or in preparation for doctoral-level study.


Programme structure

Optional modules

The MEd TESOL is a one year fulltime course during which you must take 180 credits of taught modules. You may be allowed to study a maximum of 30 credits from another programme subject to approval.

 Bilingual and Multilingual Perspectives on Language Learning and Teaching (15 credits)

Please note that availability of all modules is subject to timetabling constraints and that not all modules are available every year.

 Developing an Appropriate Language Teaching Methodology (15 credits)

Compulsory modules

 Corpus Linguistics for TESOL (15 credits)

 Developing Language Teachers (15 credits)

Students with less than 1 year’s teaching experience must take the Developing Practical Knowledge for TESOL Teaching module.

 Developing Materials for TESOL (15 credits)

Students with more than 1 year’s teaching experience will normally take Principles of Language Learning.

 Foreign Language Testing and Assessment (15 credits)

The following modules are compulsory for all students:  Language Awareness for TESOL  P reparing for Educational Research and Dissertation

 Discourse and Language Education (15 credits)

 Issues in English Language Teaching (15 credits)  New Technologies in Language Learning (15 credits)  Principles and Practices of Curriculum Development and Syllabus Design (15 credits)  T eaching English for Specific Purposes (15 credits)  T eaching English to Young Learners (15 credits)

Teaching and Assessment Teaching is through a mix of faceto-face seminars, workshops, and lectures. Assessment is typically a piece of extended academic writing based on the module content and your own professional experience. Assignments vary from module to module and involve a variety of assessment methods, including written essays, oral presentations and portfolio-based assessment.

Entry requirements Each application is considered on an individual basis to determine suitability. For admission to the programme, we would normally expect a first degree in language or in Education equivalent to a UK Second Class Honours. If English is not your first language you will need to submit, before starting a programme, evidence of a good command of English.
