Why Exeter? The University of Exeter offers a friendly and cosmopolitan student experience. Our three campuses provide a safe and convenient learning environment, offering programmes taught by staff from over 50 countries. During the International Summer School you will stay at the Streatham Campus in Exeter. The campus is widely acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful in the UK – many students say they fall in love with it when they first visit. Set around botanic gardens with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, it has a relaxed ambience in which to study and unwind. There are also excellent campus facilities with cafés, bars, shops, swimming pool and sports hall, all within easy walking distance of your accommodation and the lecture rooms. Lectures, seminar and workshops involve small teaching groups, allowing you to explore issues with faculty who are at the forefront of research in their field.

Why Exeter?

The City

With over 2,000 years of recorded history, Exeter is a vibrant cathedral city, just over two hours from London by train. It is a place steeped in history, with its Roman wall and famous cathedral dating back to Norman times. It also boasts a bustling modern city centre. Exeter has a number of museums, theatres, galleries and has a wide range of restaurants, pubs, bars, cafés and night clubs – all within walking distance of the campus. Exeter is consistently rated one of the best places to live in the UK for the quality of its facilities, low crime rate, relaxed ambience and fantastic

countryside. The area is popular with tourists for its warm, sunny climate, spectacular natural scenery and sandy beaches.

Coast and Country The surrounding countryside is easily accessible, with plenty to offer. Exmouth’s beaches are only 15 minutes away by train, and the wild and beautiful landscape of Dartmoor is nearby. Whether you are looking for quaint English villages, historic maritime ports or the buzz of a city centre experience, it’s all on your doorstep. There’s also a wealth of options for adventure sport enthusiasts such as mountain biking, kayaking and hiking.

Why Exeter?

All inclusive social and cultural programme The International Summer School starts with a three day orientation visit to the capital city of London. Accommodation is in central London, providing easy access to all of the sight-seeing that the city has to offer. While here you will visit the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. Once at Exeter, day trips include visits to Stonehenge, the Eden Project and the Roman city of Bath. Organised social events include a welcome barbecue, pub quiz night and a gala graduation dinner. All of this is included in the International Summer School fee.

Ancient Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site and an iconic UK tourist attraction. Built over 4,000 years ago, Stonehenge is a place of pilgrimage for people following pagan and non-pagan beliefs and is the location for annual festivals marking the summer and winter solstices.

Bath

Saturday 3 August 2013 Bath is a city steeped in history, famous for its Roman Baths. Today, you can still swim in these restorative waters at the Thermae Bath Spa. Other attractions include the Royal Crescent, the Jane Austen Centre and a multitude of boutique shops and cafes.

Eden Project Wednesday 31 July 2013

The Eden Project in Cornwall is one of the UK’s top tourist attractions. Eden’s world famous biomes host plants from around the globe, each dome representing a different climate. One of these biomes houses the largest ‘captive’ rainforest in the world, a humid jungle complete with tropical flowers, waterfalls and tree frogs. As well as the biomes and extensive gardens, Eden offers a thought provoking environmental education zone, regular music concerts and a thriving arts scene.

Wednesday 7 August 2013 An archetypal Cornish fishing village, St Ives is set on the dramatic North Cornwall coast. The town is a haven for artists and surfers alike. While here you might like to wander around the cobbled streets, visit one of the art galleries or take a boat trip to Seal Island.

Lectures/Seminars Two taught sessions of two hours will take place between the hours of 9.30am and 3.15pm. Students will be given advance notice of lecture titles and there will be preparatory reading required prior to the course. Sessions consist of lectures, seminars and workshops. Small group sizes mean that you can share ideas with your lecturer and fellow students.

Teaching Each pathway has an Academic Coordinator who is a member of faculty and who will also teach on the pathway. He or she will be able to offer advice throughout the programme.

Global and Imperial History provides you with an introduction to some of the most important developments in the creation of the modern world: the module encourages you to explore global patterns of change, contest, and the movement of ideas, goods and peoples and helps you to understand the emergence of modern societies and processes of globalisation by placing it in vital contexts: historical, cultural, and theoretical. Through this approach, you will have the opportunity to study both global developments as a whole, and local events during the last three centuries.

With the rise in prowess of emerging economies and their multinational enterprises, coupled with the international dominance of some sectors by more established multinationals, we need to reassess the management and strategic challenges facing all firms whose activities span national boundaries. The International Management pathway explores the interplay between multinational enterprise, the countries in which they do business, and the competitive environment in which they operate. Drawing upon aspects of corporate strategy, national and international politics,

corporate and consumer ethics and managerial effectiveness, the pathway enables students to gain a systematic understanding of the current tensions and opportunities of managing across borders.

The International Relations pathway will provide you with the opportunity to engage with some of the most challenging and pertinent aspects of core theoretical and empirical debates in this discipline. You will explore the evolution of Security, both as a concept and in practice. You will consider how various schools of thought contribute to understanding and interpreting International Relations. This exploration will be contextualised in efforts to address causes of recent and ongoing conflicts. For example, it will address how sustainable peace

might be built in regions such as the Balkans and the Middle East. You will also engage with the latest debates related to correlations between security, on the one hand, and intricacies of strategy; degradation of the environment; uncontrolled migration; lack of development; and health pandemics on the other. Teaching will be delivered by leading experts and it will adopt an interactive format of lectures and seminars.

The Law pathway is designed to offer a unique introduction to some of the key aspects of English, European and International Law, an insight into British and European culture and thought, and an opportunity to reflect on some of the key themes in the current global agenda. Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the European legal systems i.e. the English common law system as well as the European Treaty based system, with special reference to human rights law and international concepts. You will have the opportunity to contribute and to apply their newly acquired skills through interactive sessions in lectures, written assessment and through a mooting competition.

Physical Activity and the Environment: 21st Century Medicine offers an insight into preventive health, exercise and the environment. Drawing upon sustained research at Exeter, you will gain a deeper understanding of the science behind the interaction of physical activity and the environment on health across the lifespan. Topics will include: • physiological health and well being • psychological health and well being • natural and virtual environments and their impact on health.

These topics will span the lifecycle from childhood, through adulthood and old age. You will be able to interact with internationally renowned and world-class researchers who have experience of working with health, physical activity and the environment. This pathway is aimed primarily at those undergraduates and graduates with a keen interest in human behaviour, and especially unusual, deviant and harmful classes of behaviour. Applicants who do not satisfy Exeter’s academic, English language or other entry requirements may be given a conditional offer with details of how these requirements can be met. Students at our partner universities may be able to take the English Language Proficiency Assessment test.
