postgraduate prospectus 2013
| Postgraduate Prospectus 2013
When I was planning to study abroad, I knew that I wanted a radically different experience from the urban feel I was getting in Washington and to have a more authentic experience, so I chose Exeter over universities in London where many of my undergraduate friends were planning to study. After having an incredible semester in Exeter, I decided to come back here for my Masters degree. Exeter has a very diverse campus community, so it has been an adventure making new friends and learning about their varied cultures and backgrounds.

Investing in your university As a leading international university, we provide facilities of a global calibre. A recent £350 million investment in campus facilities and accommodation has seen the arrival of some iconic buildings to optimise your student experience. This investment is now being followed by an additional £100 million to ensure Exeter’s learning spaces, IT, science provision, library and sports facilities are world-leading. The iconic new Forum building provides a centrepiece at the Streatham Campus which opens onto an attractive piazza. It houses a purpose-built student services’ centre, 400-seat lecture theatre, a shop, bank and café. Additional new facilities on the Streatham Campus include the INTO building which provides flexible teaching spaces, a lecture theatre and a learning resource centre for international students to improve their English. Our research focuses on some of the most fundamental issues facing humankind today and in order to continue our reputation we are furthering investment in research infrastructure. The announcement of plans to build a £20 million research centre in
Exeter dedicated to developing new strategies for diagnosing and treating diseases is subsequent to a major refurbishment project, which saw the creation of world-class research and teaching facilities for Biosciences. The Cornwall Campus has benefitted from the Environment and Sustainability Institute; a £30 million interdisciplinary centre that leads cutting-edge research into the consequences of environmental change and the mitigation and management of its effects, while the Exchange building provides a collaborative lecture theatre, spaces for small group discussions and exhibition areas on the campus.

Living in Exeter Exeter is a safe, student-friendly city with a vibrant and fun culture and relaxed atmosphere. With a population of 120,000, there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, pubs and modern shops which sit alongside Exeter’s historic buildings such as the 14th century cathedral. Most new students find that Exeter is not a particularly expensive city in which to live. Both Exeter campuses are based within walking distance to the city centre. The majority of students are based on the Streatham Campus; the University’s largest site in Exeter. The Campus, widely considered one of the most beautiful in the country, has recently benefitted from a £275 million investment programme, creating a unique environment in which to study. Cutting-edge buildings and facilities are found in a unique environment in which to study, with lakes, parkland, woodland and gardens to enjoy throughout the year. The St Luke’s Campus has a vibrant, collegiate atmosphere, and is home to Masters students in the Graduate School of Education and Sport and Health Sciences. Walk through the arches of the traditional North Cloisters and you will see the lawns of the quadrangle surrounded by modern teaching buildings and student
residences. The Campus benefits from its own library and sports facilities, including an indoor heated swimming pool. Students at St Luke’s also take full advantage of all the academic, social and sporting facilities at the Streatham Campus which is a 25-minute walk or short bus ride away. The Students’ Guild, our award winning students’ union, is central to student life. The Guild is a dynamic, innovative organisation, existing to represent all students. Through Guild representation, the broad range of services, and exceptional activities, we are confident that you’ll have the best possible university experience at Exeter. In addition to sports clubs, the Guild supports over 150 societies including those dedicated for postgraduates and international students. Virtual campus tours www.exeter.ac.uk/virtualtours
Living in Exeter and Cornwall | 19
Living in Cornwall No other university in the country beats our Cornwall Campus for student satisfaction. Combining intimacy and friendliness with world class, cutting-edge teaching and research, the Cornwall Campus is a great location to pursue postgraduate study. Though one of the smallest top ten university campuses in the UK (4,000 students), we excel in tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges through our programmes and research projects. Alongside subject specific equipment and resources our perfectly proportioned campus has recently benefitted from £50 million investment in world-class research and learning facilities. Our newest development, the £30 million Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI), puts the University and Cornwall at the forefront of research into the solutions to problems of environmental change. The campus is set within what many consider to be the most beautiful county in the UK. It is just a few minutes’ walk from Penryn, home to a rapidly expanding collection of independent cafés, shops, galleries, restaurants and a railway station with services to Falmouth (10 minutes’ journey) and Truro (approximately 20 minutes away). Falmouth has developed into a vibrant student town, with a wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants and a lively café culture, while its seven beaches, beautiful rivers and the world-famous marina attract visitors from far and wide.
The campus is shared with University College Falmouth. The two institutions have separate teaching facilities but students share accommodation and social spaces including the new café, Koofi, the Students’ Union www.fxu.org.uk and sports facilities on campus. This creates a vibrant mixture of students from science, engineering, humanities and arts backgrounds, both on campus and in the local area. Virtual campus tours www.exeter.ac.uk/virtualtours

I chose to study my Masters degree because of the University’s reputation. Also I read the profiles of some of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies graduates and alumni and all I could think is that I want to achieve what many of them have achieved! I believe that the multi-cultural environment, the University’s focus on students and their needs, and the expertise of the professors make Exeter a unique place to study. Reema Saffarini

One of the main reasons for studying at Exeter was the high level of student satisfaction that it constantly receives. Moreover, 85 per cent of the Theology department’s research is considered of international quality. Since I wish to get involved in academia in the future, these aspects of the department gave me the impetus to study here. If that isn’t enough, Dr Stavrakopoulou’s recent TV appearance on Bible’s Buried Secrets certainly gives the department its celebrity endorsement. Alan Hooker, MA Biblical Studies
