I would definitely recommend studying at the University of Exeter due to its reputation, ranking, helpful staff and the amount of support students receive. Already in the top 10 UK universities; with the recent funding it could climb even higher. Graduating with a degree from the University stands you in good stead afterwards, whether that’s progression to a PhD or entering the professional world. Many of the best employers including the Big Four and international companies target and consistently hire the University’s graduates, which is a plus in such competitive times. This investment is now being followed by an additional £200 million to ensure Exeter’s learning spaces, IT, science provision, library and sports facilities are world-leading. Central to our investment is the new Forum building which provides a centrepiece for the Streatham Campus and which opens onto an attractive piazza. Other new facilities on the Streatham Campus include the INTO building which provides flexible teaching spaces, a lecture theatre and a learning resource centre for international students to improve their English. It follows a major refurbishment project, which saw the creation of world-class research and teaching facilities for Biosciences. The Penryn Campus has benefitted from the Environment and Sustainability Institute; a £30 million interdisciplinary centre that leads cutting-edge research into the consequences of environmental change and the mitigation and management of its effects, while the Exchange building provides a lecture theatre, library facilities and spaces for small group discussions and exhibitions.

Living in Exeter Exeter is a safe, student-friendly city with a vibrant and fun culture and relaxed atmosphere. With a population of 120,000, there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, pubs and modern shops which sit alongside Exeter’s historic buildings such as the 14th-century cathedral. Most new students find that Exeter is not a particularly expensive city in which to live. Both Exeter campuses are based within walking distance of the city centre. The majority of students are based on the Streatham Campus; the University’s largest site in Exeter. The campus, widely considered one of the most beautiful in the country, has recently benefitted from a £275 million investment programme, creating an exceptional environment in which to study. Cutting-edge buildings and facilities are found in a unique environment in which to study, with lakes, parkland, woodland and gardens to enjoy throughout the year. The St Luke’s Campus has a vibrant, collegiate atmosphere, and is home to Masters students in the Graduate School of Education and Sport and Health Sciences. Walk through the arches of the traditional North Cloisters and you will see the lawns of the quadrangle surrounded by modern teaching buildings and student residences. The campus benefits from

its own library and sports facilities, including an indoor heated swimming pool. Students at St Luke’s also take full advantage of all the academic, social and sporting facilities at the Streatham Campus which is a 25-minute walk or short bus ride away. The Students’ Guild, our award winning students’ union, is central to student life. The Guild is a dynamic, innovative organisation, existing to represent all students. Through Guild representation, the broad range of services, and exceptional activities, we are confident that you’ll have the best possible university experience at Exeter. Living in Cornwall Our Penryn Campus combines intimacy, friendliness and exceptional rates of student satisfaction with world-class teaching and research. Though one of the smallest top ten university campuses in the UK (4,000 students), we excel in tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges through our programmes and research projects. Alongside subject-specific equipment and resources, our perfectly proportioned campus has recently benefitted from £50 million investment in worldclass research and learning facilities. Our newest development, the £30 million Environment and Sustainability Institute, brings together state-of-the-art resources with leading academics. It pioneers cutting-edge research into solutions to overcome problems of environmental change. The campus is in what many consider the UK’s most beautiful county. It is just a few minutes’ walk from Penryn, home to a rapidly expanding collection of independent cafés, shops, galleries, restaurants and a railway station with services to Falmouth and the city of Truro (10 and 20 minutes, respectively). Falmouth is a vibrant student town with a wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants and a lively café culture; its seven beaches, beautiful rivers and world-famous marina attract national and international visitors.

The campus is shared with Falmouth University. The two institutions have separate teaching and research facilities, but students share accommodation and social spaces, including The Exchange, the Students’ Union www.fxu.org.uk and campus sports facilities. This creates a vibrant mixture of students from science, engineering, humanities and arts backgrounds, both on campus and in the local area. The Truro Campus, located in the Knowledge Spa at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, is the base for students studying MSc Environment and Human Health. What is a Masters degree? The majority of our taught postgraduate programmes are Masters degrees. These normally combine advanced-level tuition with the completion of a dissertation under the guidance of an individual member of staff. Many of our taught degrees follow a flexible modular format whereby you can choose modules from a range of specialisms or combine modules from different areas to tailor your degree to your own interests. We offer the Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Research (MRes) degrees. The MRes degree combines subject-specific tuition with advanced-level training in methodological, analytic and research skills, vital for undertaking further research. Also on offer are other specialist taught postgraduate degrees such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) (p30) and the Master of Laws (LLM) (p52).

Some of our Masters degrees can be taken in a shorter form, by omitting the dissertation or some of the taught modules. Whereas a Masters programme represents 180 credits, of which around 60-90 credits form the dissertation element, a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) and a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) cover only taught modules and are available in a number of subject areas. These programmes are studied over six-to-nine months full-time.

Most Masters programmes are 11–12 months full-time, with many programmes also available for part-time study and lasting roughly twice as long. However, please note that international students are subject to visa regulations which normally prevent part-time study. We also offer some distance-learning programmes which require little or no attendance at our campuses. These enable you to study for an Exeter postgraduate qualification anywhere in the world.

Entry requirements vary by programme, but as a general rule you will normally be expected to achieve an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1) or international equivalent. An initial indication of academic entry requirements can be found on the subject pages in this prospectus.

One of the main reasons for studying at Exeter was the high level of student satisfaction that it constantly receives. Moreover, 85 per cent of the Theology department’s research is considered of international quality. Since I wish to get involved in academia in the future, these aspects of the department gave me the impetus to study here. If that isn’t enough, Dr Stavrakopoulou’s TV appearance on Bible’s Buried Secrets certainly gives the department its celebrity endorsement. ALAN HOOKER, MA BIBLICAL STUDIES
