Health and safety Risk assessment Aims: This course is designed to develop your practical confidence by equipping you with the knowledge and skills you need to complete health and safety risk assessments effectively.

You will be able to understand the essential steps needed to complete risk assessments, evaluate effective controls and understand how to use risk assessments appropriately. Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) Aims: This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge you require to identify the COSHH risks that are present in your work environment. It will provide you with the practical information and confidence you need to complete a suitable risk assessment and understand the severity of the risks present. You will be able to understand how to assess COSHH risks and implement effective risk control measures to protect employees and others from exposure to hazardous substances at work. You will also be provided with COSHH risk assessment templates for use in your own organisation.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at those with responsibility for COSHH risk assessment and those implementing a COSHH management system. The course is appropriate for any sector.

Display screen equipment (DSE) assessment Aims: This course is designed to enable you to understand why assessing DSE is important for everyone. It introduces the principles of ergonomics and will guide you through the essential steps needed to complete DSE assessments and evaluate effective controls. You will be equipped with the knowledge to set up workstations correctly and you will learn practical steps to improve workstations i.e. layout, equipment, environment, work routines, eyesight and user posture. You will also be able to conduct DSE assessments confidently and use the findings of assessments to recommend effective controls.

Intended learning outcomes: As a result of attending this course, you will be able to…

Understand what DSE is and what people need to know Define the principles of DSE assessments and the legal elements to consider List the functional best-practice steps to take in your assessment process Identify DSE related hazards, decide who may be harmed and how, evaluate risks and implement controls Know how to set up a workstation including: keyboard, mouse, display screen, software, chair, work surface, work environment, taking into account the use of laptops and tablets and be familiar with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) workstation checklist

Provide advice on how to improve posture and wellbeing e.g. positioning of the head, upper and lower back, arms and wrists, legs and feet, including taking breaks to reduce fatigue and visual problems Evaluate controls to ensure you get the best practical option to control the risks Develop risk assessment templates to suit your needs Who should attend?

This course is for staff that are nominated DSE Assessors and are required to complete DSE assessments with/for staff within their workplace.

Manual handling – techniques and assessment Aims: This course introduces the principles of the ergonomic approach to lifting and handling operations. It is a combination of theory and hands-on learning where you will be able to rehearse various good handling techniques.

You will also be guided through the risk assessment process to enable you to complete manual handling risk assessments for activities/tasks that take place within your workplace.

Intended learning outcomes: As a result of attending this course, you will be able to…

Understand how high, medium and low risks can be identified and introduce functional solutions to manage them

Understand what manual handling is, what hazards and risks are involved and who may be harmed and how

Ensure that all risks are reduced to as low as reasonably practicable

Understand how the body works and how different activities can cause pain and injury Understand the importance of correct lifting and handling techniques to protect employees and others from injury/harm from manual handling activities Put this understanding into practice by knowing the essential steps needed to complete suitable risk assessments, plan a manual handling activity/task including the introduction of suitable control measures

Who should attend?

This course is for staff where manual handling (lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling) forms a significant part of their work.

This course is also appropriate for supervisors / managers who manage staff that undertake manual handling activities.

Fire Nominated fire marshals/wardens and evacuation management Aims: This course explains the roles of fire marshal and evacuation officer (senior fire marshal/warden) in an emergency evacuation and outlines the appropriate responses to emergency situations. It will teach nominated fire marshals/wardens and evacuation officers how to successfully fulfil their role. The session includes some practical experience in the use of fire extinguishers and fire blankets against live fires.

Outline the role and responsibilities of a fire marshal and evacuation officer in an emergency

Identify the purpose of principal fire safety legislation

Identify the means of escape measures in your building(s) for those persons with assistance needs

Understand the impact of fire Recognise the importance of fire prevention (housekeeping) in managing fire risks Recognise the different fire detection and warning systems within different settings Identify the range of available fire extinguishing media and understand the importance of its correct location and use Recognise the variety of human responses to emergency situations

Introduction to fire safety management Aims: This course will provide delegates with an awareness of their responsibilities for managing fire safety in their workplace. Delegates will be supported by our fire safety experts to understand the key components of a fire safety strategy, fire training requirements, an understanding of risk assessment and a practical working knowledge of the fire safety legislation.

Wellbeing Management of stress at work Aims: This course is recognised as a solution-focused session that will equip any manager with an understanding of how to proactively and reactively support employees’ mental wellbeing. Whether you have an absence or presenteeism problem, or you would like to prevent a problem from occurring, this is an excellent course for developing front-line management skills.

Managers will develop an understanding of the stress reaction, understand how stress builds and manifests, and gain an awareness of how to support an employee whilst meeting statutory and ethical responsibilities. Managers will also be able to evaluate their leadership style and understand what leadership strengths they can introduce to the workplace.

Personal resilience Aims: Have you ever wondered why some people just seem to manage pressure really well? The aim of this session is to increase participants’ knowledge of personal resilience – what helps to keep us well, even under difficult or challenging circumstances – and to promote self-awareness and personal responsibility for wellbeing. This is a fantastic session for those who want to evaluate their own resilience. Each delegate will have a personal resilience profile (pre-course assessment), which can be self-evaluated during the session.

Mental health awareness Aims: This introductory half-day course has been designed to increase mental health awareness in the workplace, to help staff feel more confident in supporting colleagues and contribute to a positive work environment.
