Sport for All:

Something for everyone:

The athletic union

Sports clubs at exeter

The Athletic Union (AU) is the student-led organisation responsible for ensuring the University offers a comprehensive sporting experience to all Exeter students. The AU manages our 49 student sports clubs, the intra-mural sports programme and the Sports Volunteering Scheme, as well as organising a variety of student-facing events throughout the year. Our sports clubs boast a combined membership of in excess of 5,800 students, placing us towards the very top of sports participation rankings in UK universities. Sports Clubs range from the more traditional to the more unusual and are open to students of all abilities and experience levels. For many of our alumni, involvement in a Sports Club is a significant aspect of their University experience. These student-led organisations have a profound impact on many during their time at the University of Exeter. Regular fixtures throughout the UK and a number of international activities, combined with a membership of students of over 100 nationalities, means that Athletic Union activity extends well beyond the Campus walls. In addition, expanding alumni networks result in interaction long after graduation.

The intra-mural sports programme is designed to give all students access to friendly but competitive sport. Teams are entered from halls of residences, academic subjects and student societies. Weekly fixtures are organised and teams compete in organised leagues. In excess of 2,500 students regularly participate in intra-mural competition in six sports. The intramural programme also hosts a variety of additional tournaments and competitions that are incredibly popular. A number of one-off events throughout the year provide a fantastic showcase for student sport in the community. Annual events include ‘Varsity’ fixtures in football, held at Exeter City FC St James’ Park, and rugby held at Exeter Chiefs’ Sandy Park. These two spectacles alone attract a combined attendance of over 7,000 spectators. The benefits of supporting the Athletic Union include great access to the student body, an ideal platform for brand exposure and an instant connection with huge numbers of tomorrow’s graduates.

World Class Sports Facilities: We are dedicated to providing an excellent experience to users of all abilities and ages and our campuses are home to some of the best sports facilities in the region. Facilities are based on six sites across Exeter and Cornwall and over £20million has been invested in recent years on their development. Although predominantly used by our student body, our facilities are also enjoyed by University staff, school groups, sports clubs and members of the public. Our partnerships with national governing bodies such as the Lawn Tennis Association, England and Wales Cricket Board and Badminton England see us host a wide variety of engagement activities with the community. The Sports Park on our Streatham Campus is the main site for sporting activity and facilities here include the Exeter Tennis Centre, the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre and an Olympic standard water-based hockey pitch with grandstand to name but a few. The Nicholas Bull Boathouse, opened in 2012, sits on the banks of the Exeter Canal and is home to our Boat Club, a leading university rowing club.

Elsewhere, many of our teams train and compete at Duckes Meadows, where the17 sports pitches are a hive of activity throughout the year and our Topsham Sports Ground is home to five High Performance teams where the pitches, pavilion and changing area provide an ideal venue for elite athletes. The University of Exeter also boasts indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a range of exercise studios, gym facilities and additional indoor and outdoor sports pitches that are used for both competitive sports participation and leisure pursuits throughout the year. The Russell Seal Fitness Centre provides a state-of-the-art fitness facility for all users. The 220 station venue is the perfect environment to meet any fitness goal and brings the latest in gym innovation to the University of Exeter. Our ambition doesn’t stop here. Further developments are planned for our sports facilities and construction is underway on a short game practice area on Streatham Campus that will reinforce our standing as the number one ranked University in the UK for golf.

In the 2012/13 BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) table, the University of Exeter was ranked in 5th position of 151 institutions. That we have consistently finished in the top ten of this table in recent years, above many institutions with a greater number of students, is a testament to the quality of the sporting experience available at Exeter. Our High Performance Programme has a reputation for developing some of the best young sportspeople in the country and over 300 students benefit annually from our support. High Performance athletes receive a comprehensive package of services including access to state-of-the-art training facilities, expert coaching, strength and conditioning support, physiotherapy, sports massage, video analysis, nutritional advice and individual athlete lifestyle mentoring. Up to 40 Sports Scholars per year receive additional resource to ensure they reach their sporting potential. Scholarships are awarded to student athletes that can demonstrate previous performance at international level or the potential to attain such standard. Recent alumni from our Sports Scholarship Scheme have gone on to compete at the very highest levels in their chosen sports including Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World Cups and European Championships.

UniversityofExeterSport

The High Performance Programme focuses on 10 sports and the University was ranked in the top ten of the 2012/13 BUCS rankings in ten of these disciplines, finishing in the top five in seven of them. Focus sports benefit from professional coaching and full-time staff overseeing each programme. Future developments in our High Performance Programme include an exciting new initiative in cycling that will give the very best riders the opportunity to integrate into a performance-focussed environment while completing undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. We already enjoy success in cycling with a number of our alumni involved in the sport, including a recent graduate who competed in the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Support of our High Performance Unit is a prestigious honour that attracts support from corporate sponsors and philanthropic donors alike. If desired, supporters are able to have a high level of interaction with the students they support and donors to the programme receive a great level of satisfaction from their support.

Exeter Sport: A tradition of excellence

The University of Exeter has a renowned sporting tradition which dates back to our early origins in the middle of the nineteenth century. Throughout our history we have championed sports participation and physical recreation and we are proud that sport continues to form a significant part of the Exeter Experience for a great many students.

Sport in the Community: the Sports Volunteering Scheme The Sports Volunteering Scheme places University of Exeter students in local primary and secondary schools where they coach a variety of sports during curriculum PE lessons, lunchtime clubs and after-school sessions. Our student volunteers have a profound impact on the sporting experience of huge numbers of schoolchildren and are highly valued by teachers and parents alike. Involvement in the scheme enhances student employability and as a result in excess of 450 students register to volunteer their time every year. Upon completion of ten hours of volunteering, students are able to claim generous subsidies towards formal coaching qualifications. Students can then use these qualifications to attain paid coaching positions in schools and clubs, further enhancing their experience and the community sporting provision.

We also host a number of events throughout the year that see huge numbers of schoolchildren visit Campus. For many this is their first experience of a University. Support of the Sports Volunteering Scheme offers an opportunity to be aligned with an initiative that has a hugely beneficial impact on the community and has a fantastic reputation for promoting sports participation and a healthy lifestyle.
