Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) / MEng Your course Our Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) and MEng courses provide in-depth coverage of modern, industry-relevant chemical engineering material from the basics of chemical engineering and physical chemistry to the finer points of advanced mass transfer and reaction engineering. Supported by experienced doctoral level academics, you’ll learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical lab sessions. Underpinning all of our teaching is an emphasis on transferable skills, so whether you’re getting to grips with instruments in the lab, using industry-specific software packages or working on a group presentation, there’s a whole range of opportunities to acquire hands-on experience and maximise your employability. The MEng course offers the extra breadth and depth of study and research associated with Master’s level courses. Both courses offer a placement in Year 3, to give you the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice and provide a valuable insight into real world chemical engineering, helping to give you the edge when you graduate.

BSc(Hons) Your course From fuel and clothing to pharmaceuticals and phones, chemistry helps make our modern everyday lives possible. Chemical engineering delves into how chemical reactions can be scaled up for industrial manufacturing. This course gives you the chance to become fluent in both areas of chemistry and chemical engineering and set yourself up for career opportunities in a wide range of industries that rely upon the ability to integrate both disciplines. You’ll be taught by academics in specialist areas of chemical engineering and chemistry who are all educated to doctoral level in their subjects and involved in forward-thinking research. This ensures we keep our courses challenging, exciting and thought-provoking.

Chemistry is the central science that makes our modern everyday lives possible. Chemical engineering delves into how chemical reactions can be scaled up for industrial manufacturing. This predominantly chemistry based degree gives you the chance to specialise as a chemist while also understanding the language of chemical engineers, setting yourself up for career opportunities in a wide range of industries that rely upon the ability to understand both disciplines. Designed with a four-way split between organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, this course also focuses on problem-solving and logical reasoning. Plus, our academics are all educated to doctoral level in their subjects and involved in forwardthinking research. In our chemical sciences labs you’ll have the chance to learn using the kind of instruments used in industry. And with an optional work placement in Year 3, you’ll find everything in place to help you gear your study towards boosting your employability.

Course length: Yr 0 of a 4–5yr degree Entry requirements: A Levels/BTEC/UCAS points CCE/MMP/80 inc. entry test and interview.*

Your course If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to one of our science based degrees, you can apply to our Science Extended Degree. Getting stuck into the four main disciplines of biology, chemistry, maths and physics, you’ll have the chance to get a grounding in the scientific knowledge you’ll need no matter which route you eventually decide to take. Our professional, dedicated and friendly staff are on hand to help reshape the way you learn, challenge you to rethink your own practices and equip you with the skills that will be the foundations for your further studies. Taught through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals in our modern facilities, you’ll have the chance to benefit from staff’s expertise in both academia and industry. Optional drop-in sessions offer a great opportunity for you to strengthen your knowledge and make sure you’ve got a clear understanding of all the material as you go along.

Progression onto Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) is dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths component. Progression onto Chemical Engineering MEng is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Maths component, plus an overall pass mark of at least 70%. **

Progression onto Pharmacy MPharm is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all six modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Plus at least 70% in the Chemistry and Maths modules. You must also successfully undertake an interview with the Pharmacy admissions staff. ***

Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website www.courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply. Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Major changes

Termination of course

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via UCAS at ucas.com

If you want to start your course in September 2020, you can apply to UCAS any time from 1 September 2019 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by 15 January 2020.

If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.
