Course info
Marketing is one of the core disciplines of business. Study business and marketing together and you’ll have a unique understanding of both topics that could prove invaluable in the private or public sector. The course begins with a focused introduction to the core principles of marketing. We’ll look at what drives the consumer, and how to connect with them. And we’ll take a wider view to see how marketing fits into the business environment.

The business modules on the course enable you to focus on the business issues that you’re interested in. You’ll begin to develop an understanding of just how complex organisations can be, and how individuals, groups and processes can affect a business’s overall performance. With globalisation and instant communications, many businesses are operating in a truly international market. The marketing managers of the future will need to compete on a global scale.
Course length: 1yr full-time Entry requirements: HND or equivalent/ Foundation degree/ 120 ECTS credits
This one-year top-up course aims to help you gain the skills and knowledge to get started on a career in global marketing. It could be ideal if you’ve already studied marketing or business. If you already have a significant level of market awareness and would like to gain a deeper understanding of marketing in an international context, we’ll give you the opportunity to enhance your strengths in global marketing and international business and give you the chance to choose modules like strategic management to build up your skills. The Employability and Placement Team Our team are always on hand to guide and support you through recognising your skills, understanding how to effectively promote yourself to an employer and developing your employability potential. We are here to help prepare you for securing a placement year as part of your degree and helping you on your path towards your future graduate career. The Employability and Placement Team have built strong relationships with local and global organisations resulting in repeat placements year on year with companies including Hewlett Packard, Bosch (Sia Fibral), NHS, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Unilever. We have created strong links with local companies including Cummins and Thornton & Ross. In some cases, students completing placements are returning with offers of graduate roles from companies such as Microsoft.
Michael France studying Business and Marketing BA(Hons), Global Marketing Operations and Planning Intern at HP Inc The Employability and Placement Unit helped me a lot in my search for a placement, they went through my CV with me, held mock interviews & assessment centres with me and even pointed me to the right websites to look for a placement. Participating in the experience was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only have I made some incredible friends from all walks of life but I have developed technical skills in data analytics, campaign planning, project management, relationship management to name a few and an increased understanding and awareness of the world of work. I truly feel as through my placement has set me up for a real life working experience and has allowed me to get a jump start in the skills I will need for the future. In returning to final year I feel fully equipped to complete my academic studies and have many different points of view in comparison to when I first started at university. I knew I wanted to work in marketing, however I had not considered just how many different roles sit within a marketing team. My placement year has really shaped my understanding of the different roles and requirements of working within a marketing team and this has helped shape the area and specific role I would like to eventually work in when I finish university. Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.
For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff ; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.
Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.
Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
Major changes
Termination of course
We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.
In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
