Ever thought “I can design that better”? Design is a creative process, and Engineering Design allows you to be creative and use your imagination whilst following a methodology. This course aims to develop the skills, knowledge and thought processes to enable you to design and refine mechanical and electromechanical products.
Innovation is also about improving what already exists and examples can be seen everywhere in the world around us from renewable brake systems to power transmission devices, such as couplings. From multi-link mechanisms used on JCBs, to bearings for carrying high loads, or multi-ratio gearboxes.
As well as learning the theory, we use CAD and 3D CAD as the main design tool. We have a range of software tools for analysis and simulation, for instance, we use Solidworks which is used in industry, so when you enter the world of work, you’ll have experience using the software already.
Example modules
• Manufacturing, Measurement and Diagnostics • Engineering Communications and Materials • Analysis of Materials • Innovation, Detail Design and Specification
Your future
During your studies you have the chance to take a placement after your second year. You could work in the industry and put what you’ve learnt into practice. We’ll also give you the opportunity to join our student teams who take part in national events like the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Formula Student, Railway Challenge, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Challenge competitions (or comparable design and build competitions). You’ll work alongside fellow students from different engineering disciplines, which reflects how you’ll work in industry.
