The decisions that are made in governments and other institutions can have a huge effect on our lives, particularly now that we live in a truly globalised society. This course aims to give you an understanding of how those decisions are made, and encourages you to take an in-depth look at development, conflict, inequality and power. Throughout the course you’ll have the opportunity to gain a critical understanding of political processes and institutions, with exploration of systems of governance and decision-making across the world. You can explore areas including policy-making, political theory, international diplomacy and identity politics, building up your experience in research methods and critical analysis as you do so. We know there is no substitute for gaining hands-on experience, so we provide you with the opportunity to apply theory to practice with a work placement in your second year.

“I had the opportunity to undertake my work placement with Tracy Brabin when she was an MP (she is now the Mayor of West Yorkshire). This was an eye-opening experience for me as the lived experience of the role of a local MP and their staff was highly educational for me. Furthermore, it gave me experience in teamwork in a professional environment, as I would often work alongside another caseworker.”

Politics is not a spectator sport
“For my work placement I created a radio show on campus talking about all things politics. We had a weekly broadcast where we covered everything from elections, to philosophy and global politics. Whilst it wasn’t the conventional work placement, it was invaluable in broadening my political insight and interaction with the multi-faceted aspects of politics today. The modules were engaging and kept me thinking dynamically, which gave me the confidence to pursue my ambitions in the field of politics.”
The Politics Society
Placements with MPs and regional mayors are a popular route, but politics work placements also take in the education and voluntary sector as well as media outlets.
You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities, such our active Politics Society which gives you the chance to see politics in action. Discussing wide ranging political realities with students who hold a variety of differing political ideals will develop your debating skills, help you to engage in the subject and enhance your studies in a supportive environment.
In your second year you’ll undertake a work placement* alongside your studies. You’ll be supported through CV development and application processes and your placement will give you experience of working in a relevant career, as well as allowing you to apply theory and debates to a real world workplace.
Politics isn’t a spectator sport where you take notes on things happening in Westminster. Our Politics course encourages you to take part, so we do all we can to get you out of the lecture theatre and into the thick of it.

Student support
The Student Support team are here to support you with any non-academic issues. Offering practical advice and support on a wide range of queries which may arise during your time with us from timetabling all the way through to graduation. As well as signposting you to other university wellbeing services including disability support, financial queries, health issues and acting as a link between you and academic members of staff, as well as providing help to resolve queries you may have.
Academic skills support
The Academic Skills Support team provides guidance on how you can develop your academic skills in order to improve your grades. They provide support with general academic skills including essay writing, time management, presentations and group work skills, information technology and numeracy, research skills, as well as personal development for example confidence building and assertiveness.

The Global Professional Award also gives you the chance to get involved in projects and activities organised by external organisations, departments at the University and the Students’ Union, which is a fantastic way to meet new people and try new things.

We make it as simple as possible. You’ll complete the Award through online sessions and activities. This will take approximately 1 hour per week, so you’ll still have plenty of time to focus on your degree and your social life. You’ll be supported to complete the Award by staff who are specialists in the three areas of Careers and Employability, Wellbeing and Enterprise, plus the lecturers on your course and your PATs will help you to understand how you can get involved. Changes to your course after you enrol as a student
Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Covid-19
In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
Changes to option modules
Changes to a course you have applied for
For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Major changes
We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.
If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.
When to apply
If you want to start your course in September 2023, you can apply through UCAS any time from 1 September 2022 onwards.
