Sport, Exercise and Nutrition BSc(Hons)/MSci
BSc(Hons)/MSci
Your course
Eating healthily and being physically active are important for wellbeing, and good nutrition can help to achieve optimal performance in sport. Nutrition is increasingly important in elite sport, personal training, and communitybased initiatives, so this course can lead to an exciting and rewarding career. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of biological sciences, nutrition, exercise and health, and sports performance. You’ll go on a 140-hour work placement, which will provide you with the opportunity to apply your skills in a real-world context. The University also has strong links with local professional sports clubs, so there may be opportunities for you to work with these athletes, for example Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants Rugby Club. There is also an option to study this course as an integrated Master’s, combining both undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single four-year degree. This is a requirement to be able to register as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) held by the British Dietetic Association.
Example modules
• Exercise Metabolism • Foundations of Bioenergetics,
Metabolism and Nutrition • Nutrition for Exercise and Health • Sport Nutrition: Research and
Practice
Your future
Careers in sport and exercise nutrition include: sport and exercise nutritionist, for example with performance oriented athletes, as well as those participating in physical activity, sport and exercise for health, health promotion, health and wellbeing/lifestyle coaches, weight management practitioners, academia as a researcher or lecturer, and research and development of new product development for food companies.
“My work placement with a company which specialised in the formulation and manufacturing of food and sport supplements provided an insight into possible future career pathways. It also enabled me to develop essential time management and team working skills, preparing me for the workplace. The lecturers were extremely passionate about their chosen module and topic, and where possible they made their lectures unique and practical, so they were exciting to be in. The course had a wide range of facilities including a nutrition food science lab, sport and exercise labs and a fitness centre, which all helped me enjoy my time at the University.”
