It means a great deal to win an award that is nominated by students. Teaching creative writing naturally lends itself to a creative learning environment. Dr Simon Crump There’s more! International experiences Here at Huddersfield we’re all about being international. This could be learning a language while you study with us, or making friends with international students (we have students from over 120 countries). Or it could be going on an international trip or placement. Meet Muhammad Dadu, a Computer Systems Engineering BEng(Hons) student. That’s exactly what he did – in Silicon Valley, California. Tell us about your placement I worked as a Software Engineering Intern for Appcelerator, based in Silicon Valley, San Francisco in California. Appcelerator is a start-up which provides developers with tools to speed up mobile application and cloud services development and deployment. One of the main products allows the creation of mobile apps on platforms including iOS, Android and Windows.

What types of projects did you work on? I worked in many aspects of the company, including developing the product and cloud services. Midway through the placement, I was given the duty of managing the IT department. I also got to work alongside the CEO, Jeff Haynie, on new innovations during my last few months.

The biggest achievement has to be that I have been given a job offer for when I’ve finished my degree.

hud.ac.uk  11

(cont.)

At the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with my family

Did the placement match up to your expectations? I saw the opportunity to explore Silicon Valley, a hub of innovation, and I couldn’t let it pass. I loved every moment. I got to learn about different cultures and ways of life. I had always wanted to go to Silicon Valley. I would recommend an international placement to anyone. What was one of the highlights? There were so many, but the biggest achievement has to be that I have been given a job offer when I’ve finished my degree, which I have taken. And what about the fun stuff? I made lots of friends on the placement, including other interns from all over the world. We went on road trips, learnt to surf and just enjoyed the California sun and laid-back lifestyle.

12

Do you think going on placement has changed you as a person? Definitely. The placement year showed me how a company operates and how to execute a great product. I was able to see how to manage a team and lead innovation. What are your future career aspirations? The placement has strengthened my ambition to create a start-up business. I am currently leading a team and working on a start-up which aims to connect students with chefs in the local area, providing them with authentic home-made cuisine. We are developing the technology behind the app that makes these connections.

Inspiring students We like to think all our students are pretty special. Meet Emma Hogan, for example, winner of a prestigious Student Nursing Times award. Her performance on work placement earned her praise from parents of patients and led to her first graduate job as a Staff Nurse on a children’s ward. Find out just how Emma achieved her goals at University. She’s quite an inspiration. Emma Hogan recently graduated from our Nursing (Child) BSc(Hons) course, with an impressive Student Nurse of the Year award to add to her CV.

Seeing children get better after you have cared for them makes nursing a really rewarding job to be in.

“I always wanted to work with children, but I didn’t realise you could study it as a specialism until I did some research and realised you could go down the child nursing route. My aunt and mother are both specialist nurses, as was my grandma, and looking after my three younger sisters helped me to decide this was the career path I wanted to take.”

Enterprise opportunities We’ve won numerous awards and accolades that recognise the entrepreneurial activity here at Huddersfield. Here’s how we can help students to realise their dreams on their enterprise journey. The Enterprise Team If you’ve got the motivation, selfdiscipline and that all important bright idea, our Enterprise Team can help you explore self-employment, freelancing and business start-up whilst at University and after graduation. Some of our students choose to be their own boss and run their own business during an Enterprise Placement Year, instead of a conventional work placement with an employer. Rebecca Rose, Textile Practice (Surface Design) BA(Hons), started her own business ‘Becca Buttons’ via the Enterprise Placement Year.

I chose to do the Enterprise Placement Year and was based in The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre where there’s hot desking space and meeting pods. The Enterprise Team give you lots of support and invite you to events which help develop your business skills. James Ritchie, Electronic Engineering BEng(Hons) Founder of ClimbMax Technologies 20

The right tools for the job We like it when stuff just works and we’re pretty sure you do too. We believe access to equipment should be simple without having to resort to technobabble to be able use it.

The Library is open seven days a week during term time and round-the-clock for most of the year, and our computer lab is open 24 hours a day all year round.

It’s why you’ll have a single log-in for WiFi (which you can access anywhere on campus), email and all the software you’ll need for your course.

Our current students think we’re great. In fact the National Student Satisfaction (NSS) surveys show that student satisfaction with our library facilities is consistently above average when compared to other universities. In the 2015 NSS Survey, our students gave us a 90% satisfaction rating.

You’ll also have oodles of storage for your work – accessible on or off campus. So the next time you leave your memory stick on the bus you’ll still have a back up. Genius. It’s worth noting that continuous investment in our facilities and technology means that, regardless of the subject you study, you’ll be learning in an environment that reflects what it’s like in the real world.

The Library is outstanding with great electronic resources. Quote from a Huddersfield student from the National Student Survey 2015.

The Library Our Library is pretty special. It contains over 500 state of the art PCs and Macs. Oh and lots of books and journals. Around 330,000 in print form and literally millions in digital format. Accessing information in the Library is simple via our MyReading system. You can use it when you want, wherever you want.

As a student you’ll have access to: • Specialist subject librarians – real humans, trained to help you find the information you need. • The Huddersfield UniApp, which includes a personalised timetable, just in case you forget where you’re supposed to be and when. • More than 70 laptops available for loan 24-hours a day. • The UniAsk community where you can swap tips and knowledge with other students online.

Heritage Quay Heritage Quay is home to the University’s archive collections. Our purpose built repository (which opened in 2014) holds over 120 collections relating to music, sport, women’s history, politics, the arts, local industry, education and non-conformity. Our ‘Big Curvy Screen’ (pictured top right) is a dynamic, gesture-driven, surroundsound enabled, archive database that allows users to interact with the material in our collections on a huge seven metre wall. Our students work with leading professionals in this innovative facility to uncover, explore and animate the unique collections held here. You may want to expand your own interests, develop your creativity and make interesting discoveries to give your coursework the edge. Or you could develop your skills and employability through placement opportunities with Heritage Quay.

Our Customer Service Excellence award recognises the exceptional service that we offer our students, from our Academic Librarians to our IT support. We’re always here to help.

Learning a language Languages are increasingly in demand by businesses wishing to break into new, fast growing markets. Source: CBI/Pearson Education and Skills Survey 2014

Doing business in another country is so much easier if you speak the language. So is buying a sandwich. It will impress almost everyone – including potential employers. It also means you won’t go hungry.

of proficiency whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve studied to GCSE or A Level. There are a few ways in which we can help you to develop your language skills:

Learning a modern language in conjunction with your main subject can make you a very attractive proposition for employers, especially ones with global interests and overseas offices. We offer a range of languages including:

Major or minor subject You can choose to study a combination of languages for your degree. Or a language can be included as a minor subject in some programmes, which means it makes up one third of your degree.

• • • • • • • • •

Arabic Chinese French German Italian Japanese Spanish British Sign Language Professional English (for non-native speakers).

The great thing is that our courses also help you to develop an understanding of the culture and customs of the countries where your chosen language is used. Our language courses are flexible and provide you with a good level

For more information visit hud.ac/languages 26

Modern language as an option Many courses allow you to choose a modern language as an option, which means you take one language class a week. Independent study You can also choose to study a language in your spare time, separate to your degree course, by registering on our University Languages Programme. Not only will it look good on your CV but you’ll also get the chance to meet other students. There’s no cost, all you need to do is provide a deposit which is returned to you at the end of the programme.

Erasmus+ You could also consider studying abroad for one term or even a whole academic year as part of the Erasmus+ programme. We currently have partnerships with a range of universities, including universities in Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands. In many cases, classes are taught in English but you also have the option to study a language to really make the most of the experience. Visit hud.ac.uk/mhm/studyingabroad for further information. International exchanges If you want to study outside Europe without learning the lingo, we also have strong exchange links with overseas universities including Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Soonchunhyang University in South Korea, as well as institutions in the USA. If you want to find out more, email our International Office at international.office@hud.ac.uk

Oliver Glenister Oliver Glenister is studying on our Chemistry with Industrial Experience MChem course and has recently returned from a year in Germany. I was fortunate enough to secure an internship working for a year at DECHEMAForschungsinstitut (DFI) in Frankfurt, Germany. Moving to Germany was both exciting and terrifying; exciting because I was moving to a new country and terrifying because I couldn’t speak a word of German!

DFI supported my learning and development. They spent time teaching me how to plan my own research, use and interpret data and, just as importantly, how to speak German. My time at DFI has improved my employability by working on key skills such as time management. Moving to another country and being self-sufficient has also given me a huge amount of confidence. The funding provided by the Erasmus+ scheme made the placement a reality as it paid for my living and travel costs. I’d recommend undertaking a placement abroad, as it allows you to interact with different cultures whilst gaining relevant experience.

Fees and finance A university education is a great investment. Here are the facts about fees and funding.

How much will it cost to study at Huddersfield?

£9,000

*

per year

If you choose to take a placement year we only charge £750* to contribute to the cost of your tutor support and admin during the year. How does the tuition fee system work? The Government provides tuition fee loans meaning that there are no up-front fees and nothing to pay until after you leave university and get a job (and are earning over £21,000*). Your repayments will be deducted from your salary by your employer in the same way they deduct tax and national insurance payments.

28

Equivalent and Lower Qualification students If you are a UK or EU student who’s already completed a previous undergraduate programme of study you’ll be classed as an Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) student. From 2017-18, the government will enable ELQ students to retrain in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics by removing the restriction on accessing tuition fee loans for a second degree in these subjects. How much will I pay back per month? The amount you pay back is linked to the amount you earn, not the amount you borrow. If you earn less than £21,000*, you’ll stop making repayments. The table below gives you an idea of how much you’ll repay each month.

What other loans and grants are available? Help towards living costs Living costs support is available for eligible students in the form of a maintenance loan. This pays up to a maximum of £8,200* per year. You repay this in the same way as your Tuition Fee Loan. The amount of loan you receive is means-tested and will vary dependent upon household income. University of Huddersfield scholarships We have 1,000 scholarships of £1,000 available for students with a household income of less than £25,000 and who achieve at least 280 UCAS points on entry. You don’t need to apply for this, we identify eligible students and the scholarship will automatically be paid into the same bank account as your maintenance loan. Other help Teacher training – Courses such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and the Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning) attract government funding. For further information visit our course pages hud.ac.uk/courses or the Department for Education website education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching

Social Work – If you are studying Social Work you may be eligible for a bursary*. Further details are available from the NHS Business Services Authority website www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk Further details of possible funding for specific courses can be found on the course pages on our website hud.ac.uk/courses Help for parents Caring for children can be expensive. However, we don’t think this should prevent you from going to university, especially as there are a number of schemes that could help. The Student Finance England booklet, ‘Childcare grants and other financial help for Higher Education students’, contains detailed information about these. You can obtain a copy by contacting Student Finance England on 0300 100 0607.

Where will I live? It’s the question we get asked the most. You can still live at home – unless your folks have plans for your room. However, if you feel like moving out there are several options to choose from. There’s lots of information here and you can also find out more at hud.ac.uk/uni-life/accommodation The first thing you’ll discover when looking for a place to live is that we don’t offer accommodation directly. We do that through DIGS Student, a privately owned company that specialises in providing high quality, affordable accommodation and who are our preferred, recommended and approved accommodation providers. DIGS operate Storthes Hall Park Student Village and Ashenhurst Student Houses and guarantee to find students a

room in halls of residence. The great thing is that you can live in these halls for just your first year, or for the duration of your time at University. With over 1,300 residents, Storthes Hall Park Student Village is the largest student community in Huddersfield and Ashenhurst is only a short walk from the main University campus. Both offer excellent facilities and a community of like-minded students, so you’ll be getting to know the neighbours in no time. Want to do your own thing? Huddersfield and its surrounding area offer some great alternative accommodation so you can find a place that’s just right for you. To find out more about alternative accommodation call 01484 473446 or visit our Students’ Union at hudlets.su

Storthes Hall Park Student Village A great location for freshers, this student community provides a lively environment and is ideal for your first year. There are 1,386 bedrooms within the student village making it the largest student community in Huddersfield. It’s also a beautiful location in which to live. Each bedroom has en-suite facilities and you’ll find a range of room types and sizes to suit all budgets and needs. You’ll be in a flat with up to seven other students sharing things such as a kitchen/dining area. Great if you want to impress your new friends with your culinary skills.

There’s never a dull moment at Storthes Hall, from theme nights in The Venue – the on-site events centre – to a workout in the gym. You won’t be stuck for something to do. Commuting to University is easy. A regular shuttle bus runs between the University campus and Storthes Hall seven days a week and takes around 20 minutes. Best of all, an annual bus pass is available for a reasonable fee (currently £20 †) that entitles you to unlimited travel during University hours. Accommodation rates include all your bills such as WiFi, so there are no surprises at the end of each month which makes budgeting easier.

1 This is the perfect place for students who are a little more independent or prefer a slightly quieter life. You’ll be sharing a house, kitchen and bathroom facilities with up to seven housemates (similar to 36

We’ve got your back Studying at University can sometimes come with challenges that are difficult to face by yourself. Our Advice Centre offers free, impartial and confidential advice on matters that can affect any student. From welfare issues and financial advice to academic support or housing information, all queries are handled sensitively by our professional and experienced team of advisors. We also have HudLets (our accommodation service) which is run for students, by the Students’ Union.

Freshers’ Festival is always fantastic! The Students’ Union Campus Tea Party

Build your CV At the end of your time at University you’ll want a CV that helps you to stand out from the crowd. We can help by providing you with training and employability skills linked to a range of fun and worthwhile activities such as volunteer schemes that help the local community or being a Course Rep to help shape student life for others. Getting your voice heard Our mission statement is ‘making student life better’; we do this by making your voice integral to everything we do. If there’s an issue that’s important to you, we can help you campaign and lobby the University to make positive changes for students. Work hard. Play hard. Throughout the year the SU puts on a series of headline events such as Freshers’ Festival, Bonfire Night and Varsity. Alongside this is ‘Give it a Go’

Mike Wood, Psychology BSc(Hons) – a programme of trips, sessions and events designed to make the most of your time in Huddersfield. These include trips to Europe such as Paris and Amsterdam where you can experience the culture, nightlife and sightseeing for a fraction of the normal cost. There are also UK based trips including days out to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blue Planet Aquarium and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We make sure that there’s always something happening so your time at Huddersfield can be as fulfilling and rewarding as possible. Freshers’ Festival Every year we welcome students onto campus with a jam-packed week of activities and events called Freshers’ Festival. There’s everything from a campus tea party to nights out and it all culminates in our massive outdoor live music event HudLive, which in recent years has seen headlining acts such as DJ Fresh, Sigma and Huw Stephens from BBC Radio 1.

The SU events are always fun and a great way to meet new people. Quote from a Huddersfield student from the National Student Survey 2015.

Explore Huddersfield I like the scenery around here. It’s a really nice area to be in. Precious Oladipo, Exercise Science BSc(Hons)

Beautiful countryside on your doorstep, great shopping, fun nightlife, exciting festivals, sporting legends and friendly people who love to chat. Make a friend here and you’ve got them for life. Huddersfield is Pennine Yorkshire at its best and the perfect backdrop to the University campus. It has a cosmopolitan feel and strong cultural associations. Huddersfield’s a vibrant town, particularly for clubbers, so if you fancy throwing some shapes, Tokyo is the place to be (the club not the city). Alternatively, there are lots of cool cafés and bars offering an eclectic mix of music and exotic food and drinks. If it’s character and quirkiness you’re after, Huddersfield takes some beating. It boasts one of the largest

number of listed buildings in any Glasgow UK town or city, from its stunning Edinburgh VictorianM74 railway station to its most conspicuous landmark – the A74 Newcastle unique Victorian Tower on Castle upon Tyne A1 Hill, which is great for kite flying. M6

Investment in our campus, investment in you 46

Since 2010, we’ve invested almost £80m in new buildings for our students, making our campus a more exciting, inspiring place to learn. The University is built around one main campus, with everything you need just minutes away. Modern, architecturally striking buildings sit alongside a working canal that runs through the campus. Idyllic tree lined towpath walks, old bridges and sympathetically converted mills complete the picture.

Written by Darren, Molly and Emily

Starting university can be a really daunting time and choosing where to live can be a dilemma. Don’t worry, we’ve got it covered with our handy list of pros and cons when choosing to live in halls, a house, or commute from home. Living in halls

PROS 3 It’s a great way to meet new friends who can often be friends for life. 3 At Storthes Hall Park Student Village owned by DIGS, there are useful onsite facilities such as a gym, launderette and mini market for those last minute essentials. There is even an onsite bar so you can hang out with friends after a long day at Uni. 3 It’s really safe! Security and staff are onsite 24/7 to give you peace of mind. 3 It gives you a chance to grow up and gain independence. Managing your time, finances and meals are all now down to you!

CONS 6 Feeling homesick – it happens to all of us. Just remember friends and family are only a phone call away. 6 Having to tidy up after yourself and your flatmates! 6 Having to budget – being able to spend money on things that are not essential will be a thing of the past! Paying rent and buying food will have to come top of the list.

Living at home PROS 3 Food will always be available – whether it be a home cooked meal or a well-stocked cupboard. 3 Family and friends are always around so you’ll never feel homesick. 3 You can keep your part-time job you had before Uni.

64

CONS 6 The commute to and from Uni can take a long time, depending on where you live. 6 Getting hassled by your folks about study deadlines and being messy. 6 The library is too far away for a quick study session.

Living in a student house PROS 3 A feeling of home but still having your own independence and freedom. 3 Having more freedom to choose where you want to live and bagging the biggest bedroom. 3 Being able to throw lots of house parties!

CONS 6 Having to budget for necessities like bills or the food shop. 6 Having to keep communal areas clean and tidy when your housemates are messy. 6 Being disturbed by your noisy housemate when you’ve got a deadline looming.

REASONS TO GO ON A PLACEMENT

Written by Andy and Trang

There are absolutely tons of amazing reasons to do a placement while you’re at university, from meeting potential friends for life to developing your skills and experience. Here are just a few of the top reasons why you might want to get involved.

66

1. Real-world experience Get experience in a professional workplace to help you discover what your strengths are and what type of role or company may suit you so that you can decide on a career path that will be right for you.

“Without the University I wouldn’t have found my placement. The whole experience has allowed me to mature, grow in confidence and become career-driven. I’d recommend to any student to take a placement year as it’s really worth it!” Hannah Kitching, Travel and Tourism Management BSc(Hons) 2. Get ahead Students who have experience in their chosen area are much more likely to get a job and much more likely to earn higher salaries in that employment.* 3. Rewards Some employers pay you for the work you do and you may even get offered a job after you graduate. 4. Placement experts The University of Huddersfield is very good at helping its students find great placements. In fact, Huddersfield is in the top 10 universities for paid work placements in the UK.** 5. Get involved You get out what you put in. You’ll have the opportunity to make a difference so make the most of it – build your confidence, develop your interpersonal skills and gain invaluable work experience to help you stand out.

6. Excel Going on placement will really help you in your final year and may even help you increase your grades due to the knowledge and skills you’ve gained on placement. 7. Meet new people You might just make friends for life, future business partners and all important industry contacts to help build your professional network. 8. Feel supported Whilst on placement, you’ll still get the support you need and visits from your placement tutor.

“The Placement Unit provided me with excellent support and guidance throughout the whole process from starting to search for placements to actually completing my placement year with Lloyds Banking Group. I couldn’t have done it without them.” Sam Wood, Business Management BA(Hons)

9. See the world You could have the chance to do your placement at companies around the world, particularly if you speak another language. 10. Get a taste Placements can help you be sure which sector you want to work in – really helpful if you’re not quite certain yet.

“My placement was very valuable and has helped me through my final year of University.” Dan Briggs, Automotive Engineering MEng

The University has a great JobShop advertising local part-time and holiday jobs and they can help you to apply for them.

Hidden gems on campus Written by Sophie M, Hamad and Callum

The University has some fantastic facilities for your course, state-of-the-art fitness facilities where you can get a good deal on a membership, and our very own concert venue, St Paul’s Hall, where concerts, recitals and productions take place. The recording studios

The recording studios are perfect for Music Technology students. Based in the Creative Arts Building and Technology Building, they include a state-of-the-art 24 i/o Pro Tools HD recording studio with views into Phipps Hall – one of many performance and rehearsal spaces on campus.

The fashion studio For budding fashion designers, the fashion studio is filled with mannequins, sewing and processing machines and workspace galore. Students can work on projects, draft ideas and take advantage of as much practical time as they need.

Canalside Studios

The crime scene facilities Yes, you’re definitely reading this right! Forensic Science students have specially designed rooms which can be arranged to simulate grisly murder scenes.

70

Some computer games students have the chance to spend their placement year working in the University’s games development studio, Canalside Studios. The Studio team works on commercial projects producing games for real clients and aims to push the boundaries of innovation, as well as entering, and winning, competitions such as Microsoft’s X48 event and the Game Republic Showcase.

The labs A world of white coats and goggles awaits students studying applied sciences, including the microbiology labs, a food lab complete with cookers and blind tasting booths, and dedicated pharmaceutics and chemistry labs.

On the third floor of the £17m Business School, you’ll find a mock court room and dedicated teaching space for law students. It provides future lawyers with the chance to debate cases which can be recorded and played back to help them analyse their technique. Order in Court! The law room

Formula Student

Engineering students have the chance to compete in competitions on an international level, such as Formula Student (FS). FS gives students the opportunity to design, build, test and race a single-seat racing car and then compete at events with other students from across Europe.

The dispensary and aseptic suite For pharmacy students, the University has its own dispensary to simulate the dispensing of medicines. There’s also an aseptic suite which is identical to those found in hospitals and is used by students to prepare medicines in a sterile environment.

Radio Hud Studios

T’HUD

For those creative minds out there who can’t resist putting pen to paper (or finger to phone) to share their thoughts on a subject or perhaps the latest bit of news, there’s always Huddersfield Students’ Union magazine ‘T’HUD’. Anyone can become a part of the team and help contribute to a magazine written with us (the students) in mind.

Fancy yourself as the next Nick Grimshaw? Radio Hud is the University’s very own radio station run by the Students’ Union and the Radio Hud society based in the Student Central building. Any student can get involved with the station, covering topics from marketing to music reviews. Joining Radio Hud is the perfect choice for anyone interested in becoming part of the world of radio (it also looks great on your CV)! hud.ac.uk  71

Shopping Written by Laura, Sara and Trang

From clothes to food to household essentials, you can find everything you need in Huddersfield no matter what your budget. Here are our top tips on places to shop whether you’re watching the pennies or feeling flush.

Watching the pennies Food Check out Queensgate’s open market on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday to stock up on your fresh fruit and veg – it’s an affordable way to get your five a day! Look online and in-store for offers and discounts for major supermarkets where you’re sure to find some bargains to fill up your freezer. Clothes Got a big night coming up? Head to Primark to get kitted out in the latest fashion without it wiping out your bank account.

Essentials For all those kitchen essentials to kit out your new pad, head to Wilkos which stocks everything from kettles and toasters to cutlery and crockery – all at bargain prices. Poundland, Poundworld and Home Bargains are great for essential items such as shampoo, toilet tissue and stationery with top brand names for less. Something a little different Head to Upmarket at the open market on the second Sunday of every month for locally produced fashion, hand-made crafts and food if you fancy something a little different.

Feeling flush Clothes If you feel like splashing the cash then Kingsgate Shopping Centre is home to chain stores such as House of Fraser, River Island, Topshop, Next, New Look, H&M and TK Maxx. You’ll find plenty of choice for that post-assignment treat. Don’t forget to use your student card for those handy student discounts. Entertainment Huddersfield has your entertainment needs covered! There are plenty of book stores such as

Waterstones and WH Smith and quirky record stores such as Vinyl Tap where you can find a great range of books, records, DVDs and games to stock up on all your entertainment needs.

What makes the Library special? Written by Sophie M

It might not be at the top of your list when you’re making your decision about which university to choose, but let’s be honest – you’re probably going to spend a lot of time in the Library. Here are five reasons why the Library at Huddersfield is pretty special and a great place to study.

Group study

Sssshhhh

Music

Competitive

With dedicated study pods and rooms that you can reserve, there’s always somewhere for you to meet up with friends to go over that tricky bit of theory. There are also quiet rooms where you can really concentrate, spread your books out and work in peace.

Not only does the Library have ‘silent study’ and ‘quiet study’ areas, but if it is too noisy for any reason, simply text NOISE and the floor that you’re on to a special number and a warden will come to your assistance.

The Library has a vast collection of music from classical, pop and jazz to folk and choral. It also has a large CD and LP collection for all avid music fans! The University’s archive, Heritage Quay, also has its own dedicated music archive. www.britishmusic collection.org.uk

Bring out your competitive streak with Lemontree – the University’s very own game. Every time you use Library facilities, you’re awarded points – you’ll be amazed at how addictive it gets!

Summon

Summon is a cool online Library resource – access it anywhere, anytime. Type in any keyword and it will list all the books, journals and peer reviews that mention your keyword and tell you if they’re available. Even better, some are available online and you can even use Summon at home.

Written by Marthe, Jake and Rebecca

Deciding where you want to live and study for the next three or four years of your life is a big decision. Visiting an Open Day is a great way to find out all about university life and see if Huddersfield is the place for you. We’ve created a handy list of suggested questions to make sure you get the information you need out of the day!

Questions to ask at an Open Day

How is the course taught? Will it be lectures, seminars or practical workshops?   How will I be assessed? Exams? Coursework? Essays? Practical pieces? Presentations?   Is there an opportunity to go on placements or gain work experience during my course?   How many students will be on the course with me? If it’s a large number, will we be broken down into smaller classes?   How much contact time will I have with my tutors?   What are the facilities like in my department? (You’re likely to see some of these during the course talk or tour, but ask if there is anything else you want to see).   What is the accommodation like? Talk to a few current students to find out where they live/have lived and go on an accommodation tour if possible.

Types of study There are lots of study options when taking a degree at university. Some courses combine subjects whilst others include a placement year. Great if you like variety or fancy the challenge of real life work experience during your degree; it also means there’s something to suit everyone.

You can study with us as a full-time or part-time student, during the daytime and, for some courses, in the evening. We offer courses that are creative, vocational and professional which means that whatever industry you wish to work in when you’ve graduated, you can be confident that a degree from Huddersfield will help to get you to where you want to be.

We offer the following at Huddersfield: Bachelor’s degrees A standard Bachelor’s degree takes three years to complete (full-time) and will see you graduate with one of the following titles: Bachelor of Arts – BA(Hons) Bachelor of Science – BSc(Hons) Bachelor of Engineering – BEng(Hons) Bachelor of Law – LLB Bachelor of Music – BMus(Hons) For most of our Honours degrees there is also the option to take a placement (or sandwich) year to gain valuable work experience. This will mean your overall course will take four years.

My lecturers make the subject what it is. They are really approachable and genuinely want you to do your best. Claire Hudson, History BA(Hons) 82

Top-up If you already have a Foundation degree, or another relevant qualification like a HND, you can complete just one year of full-time study on a Top-up degree, which allows you to achieve a full Honours level qualification.

Integrated Master’s degree An Integrated Master’s degree is a four year programme (or five years if you take a placement year) which combines undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single course. The first two years are usually the same as BSc or BEng courses. Students are expected to perform well in the first two years before going on to more specialised study. On completion of the four year programme you graduate with a Master’s level degree. We offer the following: Master of Engineering – MEng Master of Law and Practice – MLP Master of Chemistry – MChem Master of Human Resource Management – MHRM Master of Science – MSci Master of Pharmacy – MPharm Certificates We offer an Education course with the classification of CertEd. A Certificate of Education is awarded after one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

6th

We're ranked 6th in the UK for Architecture in the Guardian University League Tables 2016.

Architecture and the Built Environment is fundamentally about making places. It’s the process and product of designing and constructing buildings and structures. We focus on the functional, technical, social and aesthetic considerations in realising buildings and culturally rich places.

This results in opportunities for you to work on project briefs set by companies, so you can apply your skills in a real-life context. Our Architecture and the Built Environment courses currently have links with a wide range of companies such as Aedas Architects, Atkins Architects, SimpsonHaugh and Partners, Morgan Sindall and Gardiner and Theobald.

Our courses put emphasis on real-world applications and focus on the skills you’ll need to develop innovative solutions to global challenges. We do this by encouraging your creativity, critical thinking and multidisciplinary work. The aim is to help you to be creative, practical and above all employable.

The courses we offer are designed to help you to develop the creative and pragmatic skills needed by professionals in the building and construction industry such as architects, construction project managers, building surveyors and quantity surveyors. This includes expertise in Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling, which are on governments’ construction agendas worldwide

We constantly strive to develop our relationships and links with industry, commerce and the community both in the UK and overseas.

Creating great work requires inspiring surroundings. Our contemporary studios and facilities offer advanced 3D technologies, including high performance computer aided design (CAD) and 3D computer visualisation facilities, plus high definition and multi material 3D printers for the creation of 3D models. You’ll also have access to the Digital Print Centre, our specialist facility capable of printing on a variety of media. All of this is supported by our expert technical staff.

Computers have a huge impact on our lives. It’s an area that’s continuously evolving, with more businesses using software to automate their processes, and smart phones becoming dominant. In fact, there are now more devices connected to the internet than there are people on earth! With a predicted shortfall of 900,000 adequately skilled programmers (and other technology professionals) in Europe by 2020,** there’s lots of opportunities for computing graduates. Our courses have a strong focus on programming and cover the design, development and support of software. They’ve been designed with input from industry to ensure the content is relevant and contemporary. With a common thread running across some courses in Year 1, you may have the option of switching between courses if you discover an interest in a new area.

I want to work on software that helps as many people as possible. I’d like to create a product that helps people with disabilities. Joseph Duffy, Software Engineering BSc(Hons)

All our courses have work placement opportunities.

Health is a vast subject with a wide variety of specialist areas – it’s not just about making people better, but also about helping them to stay healthy in the first place. You will work with real people and communities with real health-related issues.

You’ll get to experience the adrenalin, pace and decision making of the real world whilst out on placement. You’ll also be given the opportunity to apply the skills you learn to practical situations – this may be within hospitals, clinics, charities, schools or the community to name a few.

Our courses will provide you with everything you need to help you to reach your full potential.

We are proud to say all our Health and Social Care related courses are recognised by the relevant regulatory body and upon successful graduation you will be able to register with them.

You’ll be taught by staff who have close links with practice, many of whom have recent experience of doing the job you are training for, so you will learn from their up-to-date knowledge and skills. You’ll have access to state-of-the-art simulation equipment and purpose built environments. These include clinical diagnosis and treatment facilities, as well as simulation labs that replicate hospital areas and rooms in patients’ homes.

I believe that my course is the healthcare secret gem, as it’s still not a widely known profession. Aaron Buckland, Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons)

There are many career opportunities in the wider field of health and social care: working in schools, social services, dealing with substance misuse, community development, housing or health promotion. There may also be opportunities to work in NHS trusts, care homes, private companies or charities and other ‘not for profit’ organisations, as well as setting up your own business.

Inspiring graduate Jenny Davies, graduated Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) 2012, now an Occupational Therapist at Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust “My course at the University provided me with the opportunity to explore various areas of practice and develop the skills to be a competent Occupational Therapist. I developed links in different areas of practice and met some lovely people on the course.”

We believe that politics is not a spectator sport. It isn’t simply something that happens within the Borough of Westminster, nor is it something just studied in a lecture theatre. We believe that to study politics, you have to live, breathe and participate in politics. That’s why we give you these opportunities: We support you to experience a work placement in a political setting. We encourage you to get involved on campus, through student-led debates, blogging, and the active Student Politics Society. We even give some students the chance to study abroad in Europe, the USA or South East Asia.

Important info and the legal bit Prospectus information This prospectus was prepared in the Winter of 2015 for courses starting in September 2017. Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website hud.ac.uk. We have tried to ensure that all the information provided is as accurate and up to date as possible. However it is always possible that this information could change and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply. We will always try to deliver your course as described in this prospectus. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below. We review all optional modules each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year. We will only change core modules for a course if it is necessary for us to do so, for example to maintain course accreditation. We will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before you begin the relevant academic year. Sometimes we have to make changes to other aspects of a course or how it is delivered. We only make these changes if they are for reasons outside of our control, or where they are for our students’ benefit. Again, we will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before

the relevant academic year. Our regulations set out our procedure which we will follow when we need to make any such changes. Our agreement with you On enrolment as a student of the University, you will be asked to enter into a binding agreement with the University under which you will be subject to the University’s regulations, policies and procedures. Details of these, including information regarding tuition fees and any applicable additional charges, can be accessed from hud.ac.uk/start/applying/t&c You should read these carefully before you enrol. Please note that these regulations, policies and procedures are subject to change and you are advised to check regularly for any changes before you enrol at the University. A person who is not party to this agreement shall not have any rights under or in connection with it. Only you and the University shall have any right to enforce or rely on the agreement. Equal opportunities The University of Huddersfield is an equal opportunities institution. We aim to create conditions where staff and students are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential, regardless of gender, age, race, caste, class, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, family responsibility, trade union activity, political or religious belief, or age. Please visit our website to see our Equal Opportunities Policy Statement hud.ac.uk/equality
