What makes people behave in certain ways? What are the mental and physical processes that underlie our actions? How do we perceive and understand things? What role does the unconscious mind play in our day-to-day lives?

This course combines the theory of psychology with practical counselling approaches, helping you to build the skills required to help people in need.

You’ll look at the science of mind and behaviour, which is the psychology side of the course, and also at the different types of counselling approaches. From cognitive behavioural therapy to psychodynamic therapy and personcentred, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques. You’ll also look at the importance of health and wellbeing in day-to-day life, and how to support other people in their everyday lives.

This course provides valuable insight into the nature of human behaviour, and will help you to gain the skills that can be applied to a large number of situations, careers and further study. You’ll have the opportunity to build your communication skills, assertiveness, ability to work in teams, and presentation techniques, all of which are useful in many careers and professions. Taking a hands-on approach, you’ll be encouraged to think and apply your knowledge, looking at how psychological theories actually apply in the real world.

If you’re fascinated by psychology and crime, this course aims to give you a thorough grounding in both general psychology, and criminal psychology which could be applied to a wide range of situations and careers.
Course length: 3 years full-time

On the course you’ll gain an invaluable insight into what makes people behave the way they do, and why they choose to take part in criminal activity. Taking a hands-on approach you’ll explore how psychological theories apply in the real world, and relate to the actions people take in life. You’ll also look at criminal behaviour, and weigh up the different theories about the causes of crime.
This is an integrated master’s degree in psychology, combining both undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single four-year degree. You’ll follow the undergraduate British Psychological Society accredited degree for the first three years and in your fourth year you’ll move to the master’s level of study.

From parenting to society, peer pressure and genetics, you’ll investigate the potential triggers and assess their importance, giving you an insight into how psychology is used within the criminal justice system.

This course provides valuable insight into the nature of human behaviour. You’ll have the opportunity to apply your psychological knowledge and undertake project work which will enhance your CV and give you the key skills that can be applied in many situations, careers and further study. You’ll have the opportunity to engage in project work of your choice where you’ll be encouraged to take a hands-on approach, identifying how psychological theories apply to real world problems. You’ll also learn to generate professional level reports which will make part of a portfolio which you can use to demonstrate your advanced skills and knowledge.

Our facilities Here at Huddersfield you won’t just study Psychology, but do Psychology, so we’ll give you lots of opportunities to develop crucial practical skills. Using a combination of the latest technology in our psychology labs and the most forward thinking minds, our research active lecturers will help you explore some of the exciting theories and studies this field has to offer. From the EEG and tDCS equipment, which can measure electrical activity in the brain and test theories about the neural basis of behaviour, to the Cold Pressor, Eye Movement Tracker, Biopac System and the Oculus Rift, which is an immersive virtual reality headset, you’ll gain hands-on experience.

Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment. Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year. Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum. For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) at ucas.com
If you want to start your course in September 2022, you can apply through UCAS any time from September 2021 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by the first application deadline in January 2022. Please see hud.ac/faa for more information.
If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
