Reading inspiring works of literature is one of life’s great pleasures, but we’ll also give you the chance to develop some incredibly useful skills. Studying a language could help you to build up your language skills, gain an understanding of different cultures and explore writers’ work in their own languages.
Screenwriting BA(Hons)
Course information
On this course you’ll learn screenwriting methods and techniques as well as gaining a solid grounding in the fundamentals of creative writing across a range of genres. The course will equip you with practical skills required to pitch your own projects and to polish original work to a professional standard and you’ll meet other students studying as part of the Yorkshire Film and Television School.

Understanding the interplay between the written word and the moving image is key to our world. Academic expertise
Our Creative Writing Tutors are all published authors, with expertise in short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, novels, and script writing. Michael Stewart has written for TV, stage and radio and his debut novel King Crow is the winner of the Guardian’s ‘Not-the-Booker’ Award. Pulitzer Prize Finalist Heather Clark wrote Red Comet, the critically acclaimed biography of Sylvia Plath.
All of our historians are international experts who have written books and have unique specialisms’.
Dr Lindsey Dodd, a historian academic was one of the guest speakers at the UNESCO Conference on Memory Justice, Peace and Reconciliation attended by government ministers and policymakers from around the world.
Our literature lecturers regularly appear as experts on TV and radio and curate exhibitions to explore the literary world with wide audiences.

Field Trips
Students in Literature and in History can get out of the classroom on a range of exciting field trips. Past visits have included The Bronte Parsonage, The British Library and Shakespeare’s Globe in London. You can take a critical tour of the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool or to sites of historical interest in York. All these trips are either heavily subsidised or free to students.
Unique opportunities
Huddersfield hosts the award-winning Literature Festival which attracts some of the biggest and best writers in the world: Jodie Picoult, Joanne Harris, Irvine Welsh and Ian Rankin to name a few. You can get involved in local literature festivals and events, meeting famous authors.
