Annual Review 2014
Highlights from teaching, research and societal impact from 2014 The number of applicants to JSBE continued to grow
In the student admissions of spring 2014, JSBE continued to be one of the most popular faculties at the University of Jyväskylä. The number of applicants to JSBE increased by almost 12 % compared to the previous year. In the discipline of Economics, there were 19 applicants towards one place. The popularity of Economics can perhaps be explained through the attention that economical questions have received in the news recently.
JSBE received national responsibility in Economics of Education
The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture granted the University of Jyväskylä a special national responsibility to organise the teaching and research in the field of Economics of Education. JSBE will share the responsibility of this new field together with the Finnish Institute for Educational Research, forming a new significant multidisciplinary field of research.
30th anniversary of Avance Executive Education
In 2014, Avance celebrated its 30th anniversary with a series of seminars, covering several themes throughout the year. JSBE’s Avance Executive Education is one of the leading MBA educators in Finland, and has been awarded the international AMBA accreditation. The jubilee year culminated in an outstanding number of graduates: 77 MBA degrees were awarded at Avance during 2014, which is an all-time record.

In a competition organised by the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) Finland, Anu Pynnönen’s Master’s thesis was chosen as the best thesis in the field of business ethics. In addition, Piia Leppämäki received a commendation for her Master’s thesis. The Association for Environmental Management (YJY) awarded distinguished theses in corporate environmental management. Amani George Rweyendela, a student from JSBE’s International Master’s Degree Programme in Corporate Environmental Management, received a commendation for his Master’s thesis.
New channels for cooperation with student organisations
JSBE’s student association Pörssi worked in close cooperation with JSBE to develop student recruitment. Through the newly established ABIcrew, the members of Pörssi share information on studying at JSBE in the social media, high schools and different events. Also the fruitful cooperation with student-led Jyväskylä Entrepreneurship Society (JES) continued in 2014.
Advancing alumni cooperation
JSBE organised a successful alumni event together with the student association Pörssi in October 2014. The theme of the event was “High-growth entrepreneurship” and the programme included interesting stories from JSBE alumni entrepreneurs. In December 2014, the alumni association of JSBE was founded, to further develop the cooperation between the alumni and JSBE.
JSBE as a partner in FiDiPro project
JSBE and Aalto University received a joint FiDiPro Fellow funding from Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation) to invite Dr Richard Cuthbertson from University of Oxford to Finland. This was the 17th time that JSBE awarded Finnish economic forecasters as a part of the seminar.
Honour and visibility to JSBE research
Heikki Karjaluoto’s article “Customer Relationship Management: The Evolving Role of Customer Data” was chosen as “Highly Commended Paper of 2013” by the Marketing Intelligence & Planning journal.
Antti Rautiainen’s and Robert W. Scapens’ article “Path-dependencies, constrained transformations and dynamic agency. An accounting case study informed by both ANT and NIS” received the Literati Outstanding Paper Award in QRAM 2014. The article ”Institutional Logic of Business Bubbles: Lessons from the Dubai Business School Mania” by Kimmo Alajoutsijärvi, Katariina Juusola and Juha-Antti Lamberg was published in the Academy of Management Learning & Education Journal, and received plenty of international media attention, for example in the Financial Times.
Kasvu Open competition attracted a record number of participants
Kasvu Open, a growth business plan competition which has attracted a lot of media attention, was originally launched in Central Finland based on a model developed by local high-growth businesses and JSBE. The model was created in the JSBE’s Runway to Growth research project. In 2014, the Kasvu Open competition brought together the expertise of over 900 experienced business leaders and investors from Finland and abroad and the new ideas of 455 small businesses eager to grow. In October 2014, JSBE participated in the Kasvu Open finals and seminar, and will continue as a partner for Kasvu Open also in the future.
Long-standing cooperation with Jyväskylä Merchants Guild Foundation continued
Once again, JSBE received significant support for research and teaching from the Jyväskylä Merchants Guild Foundation. The traditional scholarship ceremony was organised in February 2014. The keynote speaker in the occasion was former CEO of Nokia, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.
Strategy Club organised several events
The Strategy Club managed by JSBE actively developed its operations. Several events were organised, bringing together members of the club, businesses in the Jyväskylä region, and students and faculty members from JSBE. One of the most popular ones was the Business Studio event presenting new channels of Marketing.
