JSBE at a glance Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics is one of the six faculties of the University of Jyväskylä. Education in business and economics has been offered in Jyväskylä since 1967. As a part of an internationally renowned multidisciplinary university noted for its high-quality research and innovativeness in advancing learning and teaching, we strive for excellence in both research and research-based education within the key fields of business and economics. Our disciplines include economics, management and leadership, accounting, marketing, strategy and entrepreneurship, and corporate environmental management. We effectively combine theory and practice to promote responsible business and policy-relevant economics in cooperation with our partner organisations. Our bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral education prepares academic experts, leaders and entrepreneurs to meet the needs of society. We also provide business and entrepreneurship studies for students of the University’s other faculties. Furthermore, our Avance Executive Education is one of the leading MBA educators in Finland, and it has been awarded the international AMBA accreditation. JSBE has a staff of 113 and the number of students is approximately 1,500.
Main achievements in 2016 • The number of primary applicants for JSBE studies increased after our integration into the joint application system for business studies. • A review team from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) visited JSBE and extended the AMBA accreditation of the Avance EMBA programme for another three years. • JSBE also advanced to the next step in the AACSB accreditation process.

2016 HIGHLIGHTS: TEACHING, RESEARCH AND SOCIETAL IMPACT JSBE returns to the University campus After being located in Ylistönmäki for five years, JSBE returned to Agora in September 2016. A housewarming celebration was held on Friday, 28 October in a relaxed academic atmosphere. The programme included an Open Doors Day at the new JSBE facilities, a BusinessStudio organised together with the Strategist Club, a degree conferment ceremony for the previous year’s graduates, and a shared evening event.
JSBE moves forward in the AACSB accreditation process JSBE advanced to the next step in the AACSB accreditation process when the Initial Accreditation Committee (IAC) approved JSBE’s initial self-evaluation report (iSER) in April. In their letter of confirmation, the IAC praised JSBE for its progress towards the AACSB accreditation and thanked the staff and stakeholders for their participation in the process.
JSBE’s AMBA accreditation is extended A review team from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) visited JSBE at the beginning of December. The previous accreditation period had ended, and this was a scheduled re-accreditation. As a result of the review, JSBE received AMBA accreditation for the next three years.
Kari Jordan receives honorary doctorate from JSBE The University of Jyväskylä conferred 13 new honorary doctorates in a conferment of degrees ceremony in August. JSBE conferred its honorary degree on Kari Jordan, President and CEO of Metsä Group. Over the course of his long career, he has been a prominent figure in Finnish industry, first in the finance sector and later in the forest industry. Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, is currently building a new type of bioproduct mill in the central Finnish city of Äänekoski. At 1.2 billion euros, it is the largest investment in the history of the Finnish forest industry. The mill will diversify the structure of the Finnish forest industry and bioproduction as well as create significant added value for the product range. The new mill and its emerging centre of bioindustry expertise have a significant impact on

Central Finland, its economy and employment. Jordan is also a prominent figure in Finnish trade and industry organisations. In 2008 the President of the Republic of Finland granted him the high-status honorary title of vuorineuvos for his accomplishments in Finnish industry.
BIF, a new international master’s degree programme, begins JSBE launched a new international master’s degree programme, Banking and International Finance, in autumn 2016. The programme prepares multidisciplinary experts for demanding national and international positions in the field of finance and banking. There were 97 applicants for this programme, eight of whom started their studies in the autumn term.
JSBE succeeds well in the national joint application procedure for business studies The number of primary applicants for JSBE increased considerably from the previous year. Participation in the joint application procedure for business studies since 2014 has doubled the number of primary JSBE applicants for studies in economics as well as in business. The number of applicants for economics grew by 57% from the previous year while for business studies the increase was 11%. In the joint application system there were altogether 1,605 applicants for economics, of whom 151 marked this as their first option. For business studies there were 1,613 applicants, of whom 365 had this as their first option. As a result, 40 new students began in economics and 90 in business studies.
Awards for JSBE teaching The student association Pörssi chose university teacher Toni Hukkanen as the Teacher of the Year 2016. The Aspen Institute recognised university teacher Stefan Baumeister for his excellent work in arranging the participation in the international case competition in 2016 as well as for teaching case research at JSBE.
JSBE student receives award for her thesis In a contest organised by the FinSERN research network, Arvo-liitto and the Finnish Social Enterprise Mark, Riikka Hakanen’s master’s thesis “By accident or by design? Social enterprise leaders’ stories of their career choice” was chosen as the best thesis in 2016 on social enterprises.

Recognition for JSBE research Doctoral student Merie Joseph Kannampuzha’s research paper “Social Innovation and Earned Income – Antecedents and Outcomes of the Institutional Logics in Hybrid Social Enterprises”, co-written with Kai Hockerts, won the Best PhD Presentation prize at the 4th EMES Conference in Liege, Belgium. Doctoral student Katariina Juusola’s and senior researcher Marjo Siltaoja’s research paper “On the Discursive Reconstruction of a World-Class: Branding Practices of IBCs in the UAE” was recognised as the best paper on critical management education at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management held in Anaheim, USA. This conference is the largest annual event in the field of management and organisation research. Professor Iiris Aaltio’s and doctoral student Qian Wang’s research paper “Making Sense of Women Entrepreneurship Research: a Qualitative Metaanalytical Review” won the Award for Best European Paper at the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) conference in New York. An article by business researcher and professor Tanja Leppäaho, “The Case Study in Family Business: An Analysis of Current Research Practices and Recommendations”, was the most frequently read and downloaded article in Family Business Review, a top 10 business journal in 2016. The article critically reviews the use of case studies in family business research from 1990 to 2014.
JSBE receives significant research funding JSBE is involved in two new consortium projects of the Strategic Research Council, which received funding from the Academy of Finland in May 2016. Within the programme Skilled Employees, Successful Labour Market, Professor Roope Uusitalo leads the consortium Skills, Education and the Future of Work. Professor Hannu Tervo is in charge of a subproject under the project titled Beyond MALPE Coordination: Integrative Envisioning. The Academy of Finland granted funding for the consortium led by senior researcher Marjo Siltaoja and its project titled Enabling the Potentials of Green Growth: Stigma Removal from Proenvironmental Business and Consumer Behaviour. The Tekes MediaRemake programme granted funding for the project ‘Black Box: Opening the Black Box of Content Marketing’, which is part of a consortium led by JSBE Professor Vilma Luoma-aho. In cooperation with the University of Tampere, this consortium investigates the operational logic of content marketing from the consumer point of view.

Two entrepreneurship education conferences in Jyväskylä The 10th Entrepreneurship Education Conference was held at the University of Jyväskylä. The conference was organised by the Scientific Association for Entrepreneurship Education in collaboration with JSBE and JAMK University of Applied Sciences. The event brought together a multidisciplinary group of participants, including teachers, researchers and representatives of various public and voluntary organisations. The programme included discussions about entrepreneurship education research and practical implementation models for entrepreneurship education. The keynote speakers were Professor Karin Berglund (University of Stockholm), Professor Jiehua Huang (University of Guangzhou, China), Professor Emerita Paula Kyrö (Aalto University), and Researcher Leena Käyhkö (University of Helsinki). This conference was followed by another one in Jyväskylä: the 11th European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ECIE), one theme of which was entrepreneurship education.
The 2015 Economic Forecasters Award to Pellervo Economic Research The 2015 Economic Forecasters Award, a crystal ball, was awarded to Pellervo Economic Research at the economic researchers’ XXXIII Summer Seminar in Jyväskylä. The seminar took place in June and once again gathered a remarkable group of Finnish economists in Jyväskylä. It was the 19th time that JSBE ranked Finnish economic forecasters in terms of their accuracy.
Substantial donations to JSBE At its anniversary celebration on 26 January 2016, Jyväskylän Kauppalaisseuran Säätiö (Jyväskylä Merchants’ Guild Foundation), a local business foundation, donated 215,000 euros to the University of Jyväskylä. The donation was earmarked for business education. The value of the foundation’s donation may increase to over 1.7 million euros during the next two years through the government matching fund programme. In addition, the foundation gave a total of 43,000 euros as study grants for the support and development of business studies, research, teaching and other activities. The celebration was marked by a speech given by Arto Hiltunen, former CEO of the S-Group. Other major donations to JSBE in 2016 came from Liikesivistysrahaston Kannatusyhdistys (supporters’ association of the Foundation for Economic Education) (150,000 euros), Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (40,000 euros) and OP Group banks (230,000 euros). JSBE and the University thank all our benefactors!
