THE AACSB ACCREDITATION AWARDED TO JSBE

The AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation is the most significant international recognition to an educational institution of economics for high-quality teaching and research. Only about five percent of all institutions in the field have received the AACSB accreditation. ACCREDITATION RAISES JSBE’S INTERNATIONAL PROFILE - We are very happy and proud about the accreditation – it is important for the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics as well as for the whole University. This five-year accreditation process represents the active, systematic and per-
sistent development of our operations. The process has involved a huge number of people and I want to thank all staff members, students and partners for their cooperation, says Professor Hanna-Leena Pesonen, Dean of JSBE. In particular, the AACSB accreditation raises the international profile of JSBE. It also offers JSBE better opportunities in the international education and research market. JSBE is the fourth Finnish educational institution in economics to achieve the AACSB accreditation. JSBE IS STRONGLY COMMITTED TO QUALITY WORK As JSBE’s key strengths AACSB mentioned e.g. the
JSBE AT A GLANCE ───── 2019
strong and stable leadership, and the friendly and supportive culture among faculty, professional staff and students. In addition to them, AACSB applauded JSBE’s clearly defined multi-disciplinary research focus areas and the very active and engaged student association. JYU Student Life program, personal study plans (HOPS) and tutor program were seen as effective and supportive practices for students. According to AACSB, both JSBE and University of Jyväskylä demonstrate a strong focus on the quality of education and research. This was evidenced by evidence of high levels of student satisfaction, strong employment outcomes for graduates and an upward trend in number of publications by faculty in highly ranked international peer-reviewed journals. Also JSBE’s and JYU Rector Keijo
Hämäläinen’s commitment to continuous improvement was acknowledged. AACSB Peer Review Team visited JSBE and evaluated its operations in October 2018. The team reviewed e.g. JSBE faculty and doctoral students’ competence, research output’s quality and effectivity, and implementation of study programs. AACSB Accreditation requires continuous quality improvement and development of operations, and it is re-evaluated every five years.

EXECUTIVE EDUCATION – A RECORD YEAR

Executive education has organized country wide EMBA program since 1989. Important milestone for EMBA program was international AMBA accreditation which was first received in year 2011, and renewed ever since. Finland is such a small country that high level EMBA program requires an ability to get applications from high potential students from all over Finland and in particular from Helsinki metropolitan area. We were delighted when EMBA module Change management succeeded to enroll a record number participants. The module included three seminars which were all organized in Helsinki with 50 participants. PÖRSSI 50 YEARS The subject association of the students of JSBE Pörssi celebrated its 50th anniversary. The celebration gathered more than 500 students, JSBE employers, alumni and honourable guests. In the celebration, Pörssi also awarded the teacher of the year (Toni Hukkanen) and the thesis supervisor of the year (Juha Munnukka).
