Insurance
Student Housing
Students from countries within the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) should carry the European Health Insurance Card. Additional insurance coverage is also recommended.
Where?
Citizens of a non-EU/EEA country are required to have medical insurance which covers the costs of medical treatment up to 100 000 euros, if the studies last less than two years. If the duration of studies is two years or more, a student will usually have a home municipality in Finland and is entitled to municipal health care services. In such cases, it is sufficient for the insurance to primarily cover the cost of medicines up to 30 000 euros. Insurance cover is required when applying for a residence permit. For more information on insurances, please contact your local insurance company or consider obtaining your insurance through the Student Insurance Program (SIP) which is the insurance option the Finnish institutions of higher education have negotiated for their international students (www.marsh.be/SIP).
Residence permit Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries who wish to stay in Finland for more than three months must be in possession of a residence permit when entering the country. Please see the attached letter from the Finnish Immigration Service for more information.
Intensive Summer Course in Finnish An intensive Finnish language course (beginner’s level, 70 contact hours, 5 ECTS credits) is arranged on 6 – 30 August 2013 by the University Language Centre. The course is open and free of charge for students who have been registered to the University of Jyväskylä and have no prior knowledge of Finnish. The application deadline is 15 June 2013 and the application form is available at www. jyu.fi/en/study/forms/finnish_course
