to help you plan your arrival to Jyväskylä and get acquainted with your future study environment.

Arrival Please make plans to arrive on 2 September 2013 or 7 January 2014. Your student tutor will contact you before your arrival by e-mail. If you have informed your tutor of the exact time of your arrival at least one week in advance, you will be met by him/her at the Jyväskylä Travel Centre and s/he will take you to your student apartment. If your travel plans change, please keep your tutor informed.
Orientation During the orientation programme on 3–6 September 2013 and 8–10 January 2014 you will be introduced to the University, student support services, to the City of Jyväskylä and – last but not least – to your fellow students. Length of your exchange period If your home university grants you a scholarship, please apply for it for the period mentioned in the letter of admission.
Insurance & residence permit Students from countries within the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) should carry the European Health Insurance Card. Additional insurance coverage is also recommended. Citizens of a non-EU/EEA country are required to have medical insurance which covers the costs of medical treatment up to 100 000 euros. Insurance cover is required when applying for a residence permit. For more information on insurances, please contact your local insurance company or consider obtaining your insurance through the Student Insurance Program (SIP). More information: www.marsh.be/SIP. Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries who wish to stay in Finland for more than three months must be in possession of a residence permit when entering the country. More information: www.migri.fi.

Student housing If the accommodation office is able to place you in a student apartment, a housing offer will be sent to you 1 – 2.5 months before the accommodation is needed. If you are placed on a waiting list, the offer may be sent to you later. The offer should be confirmed or refused within the time given in the offer. When confirming a housing offer, a deposit must be paid. Further information on the payment is provided in the offer. Unconfirmed reservations will be cancelled automatically and the room offered to another applicant. The confirmation is legally binding. The payment should be made without charges to the beneficiary.
The University of Jyväskylä has reserved a quota of furnished study-bedrooms for exchange students from the Central Finland Student Housing Foundation, KOAS and Kortepohja Student Village. Those placed in the study-bedrooms of KOAS or Kortepohja within the quota are required to sign a tenancy agreement for a fixed term as follows: 1 August – 31 December, 1 September – 31 December, 1 August – 31 May, 1 September – 31 May or 1 January – 31 May. Forenom apartments can be rented for a fixed term of 1 August – 31 December or 1 September – 31 December. The fixed-term tenancy agreements cannot be terminated within the tenancy period.
Student Union membership and student ID Joining the Student Union is voluntary for exchange
and visiting students. Joining the Student Union will entitle you to a wide range of services and benefits and it is therefore in your best interest to join. Those who have joined the Student Union can obtain a student ID (a so called Lyyra card). With the Lyyra card, you can get, for example, the following benefits: health care at the Finnish Student Health Service, student-priced meals in student cafeterias and 50 % off the price in trains and long-distance buses. These benefits and discounts are available for Bachelor’s and Master’s level students only. Doctoral students may join the Student Union and apply for a PhD student card if they wish. In doing so, they are entitled to the support services of the Student Union but do not have the right to the discounts and benefits described above. All Lyyra card holders (Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral level students) have also an access to various discounts offered by shops, businesses and service providers in Jyväskylä and nationwide. Join the Student Union and obtain the Lyyra card as follows: 1. Pay the Student Union membership fee.
The fee is paid by the University of Jyväskylä on behalf of ISEP, FIRST, UNC-EP, North-South-South and university-level bilateral exchange students. Erasmus, Nordplus, Nordlys, Becas Chile, Science without Borders and visiting students should pay the fee themselves.
Friendship family programme The purpose of the friendship family programme is to give international students a chance to have first-hand experience of the Finnish culture and way of life, in addition to life on campus. Upload the receipt of the payment into Mobility-Online no later than 1 August/ 1 December (only applicable to Erasmus, Nordplus, Nordlys, Becas Chile and Science without Borders students) or send it by post if you are a visiting student. 3. Please use your student number, which will be sent to you by 15 August/ 15 December, when applying for the Lyyra card at www.lyyra.fi.
CHECKLIST Apply for accommodation (applicable to visiting students only). Exchange students have applied for accommodation as part of their Mobility-Online application. Pay the Student Union membership fee and upload the receipt into Mobility-Online (applicable to Erasmus, Nordplus, Nordlys, Becas Chile and Science without Borders students) no later than 1 August /1 December. Visiting students should send the receipt by post or e-mail by 1 August /1 December. Apply for a residence permit well in advance if you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country. Further information: www.migri.fi. If you are an EU or EEA citizen, obtain a European Health Insurance Card and / or acquire private medical insurance. If you are from outside the EU or EEA, obtain private medical insurance. Apply for a student ID at www.lyyra.fi (applicable to those who have joined the Student Union). Wait for your student number before applying.
Inform your student tutor of your exact time of arrival in Jyväskylä. Write down the mobile phone number of your tutor and take it with you. Call him/her if you do not find each other or if your travel plans change the last minute. Bring your passport and the letter of admission with you. You will need them for example when opening a bank account. Those from outside the EU/EEA will also need the residence permit when opening a bank account. If you come from a country which uses the euro, bring your online banking codes with you. Most Finnish banks do not open bank accounts for students from the Eurozone. Bring enough money to pay for the rent (210 – 300 € per month), Survival Kit (60 €, optional, available to exchange and visiting students who have joined the Student Union) and the Student Union membership fee (if you have not paid the fee in advance, 99.50 €/academic year, 50 €/autumn semester, 52 €/spring semester).
